Im am just interested to know how many of you are reluctant to let anyone else ride your horse. When i had my arab mare as a child my mum was totally against anyone else riding her apart from me and my instructor. This was a real problem when it came to ridden show classes where the judge had to ride because she was very reluctant to respond and go well for anyone other than myself! I was just wondering how many people other than yourself ride your horse ?

Nobody! Most people would be too scared anyway

She's fine to school and I have let people do that with her but there is absolutely no way I would let anyone else hack or jump her. She can be a bit of a liability when out (100% in traffic though!), she's very good at spooking and jinking at speed.
Luckily I know her well but I almost came off her at the weekend when she went from fast canter to halt and then boinked in the air twice (£64 worth of chiro fees later and I can now move again). She is too unreliable and I would hate anyone to have an accident on/with her - she wouldn't hang around if you came off, she would just gallop home, road or no road

Not sure why I still have her to be honest.... probably cos I lurve her

I wouldn't let just anyone ride my horse, only people I like

My instructor is welcome to ride him whenever she feels like it (sadly not often

) and I asked someone at the yard if she would like to ride him while I am away this weekend. Unfortunately she is unable to so he'll go without as there isn't anyone else I'd trust. I would let friends ride him while I was around, but there aren't many people I'd trust to ride him while I wasn't there.

I will let other people ride mine although only if there are relatively competent as he can take the p*ss and be spooky when the mood takes him. I would take anyone on him on a lead though and he has been used in the past by a friend and by my sister to compete in the PC area SJ on occasion as he was reliable.

He was also loaned to college when I was there too so was ridden by many different people as well as myself for lessons etc.

I compete him but my mum, who is not competitive, hacks him as, although he can daft he's never naughty and never dangerous. I do think I'm very lucky to have him actually.

I have 2 girls who help me out with riding my 2 when I'm abroad and sometimes when I'm here. It's tricky when you have a small child! But apart from them just me and the OH.

Both of mine can be tricky so can't let just anyone ride them unfortunately, I would rather they were ridden than not ridden.

I let pretty much anyone hack P out as something would have to go majorly wrong with the world for her to be dangerous. I don't allow many people to school her as she needs firm and consistent riding - if they just want to trot around in circles though that is fine, she can do that all day!

No one really, as there is no one competant enough at my yard to handle them on the ground let alone ride them, they don't even ride their own horses more than once or twice a week, just very expensive pets. Of my three the only one who gets ridden by anybody else is my trusted Irish cob and that is only nieces, nephews and friends children on the lead rein.

I'm a bit funny about it but I'm not really sure...I think I just really love my horse so I get a bit possesive!! people who I know are competant and treat horses well and I like I would probably be OK to let hack out.
A couple of people have asked to take my horse hunting but I've said no....what about if he got injured? If he hurts himself with me I can only be mad with myself but if someone else was out on him I would struggle to take it very well (even if it wasn't there fault!)

Any one within reason - provided I know they can ride well enough - neither of my eventers are "hell/dangerous/wild/broncos" they are well schooled and polite to most so there is me, Mum, Rosie, my ever despairing dressage guru, and friends - the horses dont mind and its nice to see them go well for someone else too as it means ive done my job properly!

My trainer rides both mine for me once a week. I have one friend who hacks them out for me sometimes during the week, she is very good and i trust her completely. She is also the only person other than mytrainer who i would let school them and she's been having a lesson on T once a week whilst her horse is off work. She's very good so it's doing me a favour tbh! Also have had a couple of other friends who are very competent who i'd let ride out with me if i was the other one, not not unattended.
I think my trainer is only person i'd want to jump either of them though...she has competed T for me and would be welcome to again (she's never asked though funnily enough

My 17 year old - only people I really know can ride well and even then I am not keen. I am a bit possessive of her as she is so special to me. She is quirky and lacking in confidence and is also not good in traffic. Also a bit sharp and to be honest nobody really wants to ride her anyway.

My young horse - pretty much anyone as long as either I am there to supervise or without me as long as I know they are competent. She is very reliable, totally bombproof in traffic and I have even let a total novice hack her round the block (didnt know how to hold the reins type novice). Although I wouldnt do more than trot with a complete novice as she gets a little strong in canter sometimes.

murphy is on working livery when i'm at uni, so he's ridden by lots of different ppl. however we asked that he only be ridden by people who are fairly competent, as i didnt want ppl bouncing around on his back. he's used for the better rider who are nearing the end of their course. at home, i let my friends ride him, and i don't mind other ppl hacking him, as long as they stick to roads as he tends to go nutty in fields.

i'm very careful about who rides savannah - shes nutty at the best of times, and coz she's only 13hh, it means only children can ride her really, and i wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. i don't mind the little girls down the road riding her, as they have both loaned her at one point, and i know they can handle her. but i wouldn't put another child on her, its not worth stressing the pony or killing a child! i'd rather put kids on murphy and i ride savannah than the other way round.

Nobody rides Ellie except me

My SJ instructor rode her a little when we first got her, mainly because we were both young and inexperienced, and there were certain things he wanted to show her before he could train me. He had a bad fall from her, however, when we went for a school over some grids, and practically severed his leg

He had to have a year off riding to recover, and I dont think he would ever want to get back on her!
At Pony Club, I always put my foot down when everyone swapped ponies at the end of a rally - I had no interest in riding anyone else's pony, and I didnt want anyone else on Ellie, regardless of the fact that they were all probably ten times the rider I was. Then there was a time when I was having a flatwork lesson, and the (rather large) instructor insisted on getting on to 'have a feel' - Ellie's back visibly sagged under her weight

Mum would love to ride her, but doesnt think she'd be able to cope with her

I dont mind, I'm so precious about her that I dont think I could bear anyone riding her away down the road - I'd be having kittens!

I nearly had a fit last year when we entered a Riding Horse class, and the judge turned up in jods

I nearly took her out of the ring, but thought that was a bit of an overreaction....anyway, he rode her around with her ears in his face, and I dont think he even managed to get her into a canter

Hello forum people! Long time no see! I have been on the BD forum but not back here for ages and I can see so many familiar IDs

My daughter and I share our horse and I would let one or two chosen people ride him but not just anyone, I wouldn't want him ridden by a complete novice without good hands.

When my old mare was younger and i went to rideing club we often swapped horses but no-body would get on her. They all said she was lunatic that needed shooting before she kiled someone.
To this day i don't understand why. I had years of pleasure rideing her, i rode whilst pregnant until i got too big to get on. She would hack down the busiest of roads without batting an eye. I never ever once fell off her. She was perfect in my eyes
grin.gif

She did need a certain way of rideing - she hated contact with the bit. It was not a problem for me. I only had to think half halt and she would stop dead.
I have changed over the years and don't like others rideing them now. I think its more down to the get rich quick nature of people - wanting to sue you for the slightest thing

Neither of mine are straight forward to school. Only myself and my instructor school my horse and two girls (one of which is my sharer and the other my best friends very competant teenager) school my pony, they are always supervised though. The same two girls are allowed to hack both my pony (as long as they stay within my restrictions) and my sharer, My friends son and I are the only people to hack my horse.
I find too many people riding my horse confuses him as he is still green and am reluctant to let people ride my pony as she is very fizzy.

I wouldnt tend to let anyone other than possibly an instructor who I trust ride any of mine, and thats only on the flat - I wouldnt let anyone else jump them unless they were a pro! Its not that I consider myself a good rider at all, I would just worry as they dont know them. The only ones I let be ridden by competent people is my ponies. VERY rarely would I ever let anyone ride my 2 horses.

Anyone and everyone!!

So many people have ridden Murphy, and in quite a few cases this has been hugely beneficial for both me and him.

You can put a complete novice on him in the school, he's been ridden by kids from age 18 months upwards, and more experienced riders have ridden him when I've been having problems (or just for fun!!)

I'd be happy for pretty much anyone to ride him if I'm there (as long as they weren't too heavy) but it's slightly different if I'm not there, I can think of 4 or 5 people who I'd trust to ride him without me around. Out of those, there's probably only one I'd want to take him out in the fields on their own, purely because he can be strong/a bit cheeky alone.

There is a handfull of people i would let ride her who can all ride well and i like my instructer to ride her if i go away she goes to stay with her. the situation very rarely arises tho..

Pretty much anyone can ride either of my horses. (Obviously not complete strangers I don't know). At the yard, me and friends all often swap when we are going out. Think it is good for us and the horses.

As long as the person can ride I don't mind them riding. With a young child I have limited time so one friend sometimes rides him on a Wed and another on a Sunday.

He is perfectly weel behaved and well mannered so it does not worry me. I coundn't be bothered with a horse that was difficult to ride.

If i have seen them ride, and know that they ride well/not a numpty then they can ride merlin - but they have to be competetant as merlin does have a big buck
tongue.gif

In fact, i offer merlin to people if they need a horse for something
wink.gif
it is very good for his education to be ridden by people other then me, and makes him a better horse overall
laugh.gif

but they usually decline

I would love someone else to ride my horse!

I've had her for 5 yrs and I think one of my friends has ridden her in a school once in that time.

It doesn't help that I'm an "only livery" and the owner of the farm no longer rides, or that my horse is VERY scared of tractors. My instructor has said she will ride my mare as I would like to see someone better than me on her, but she keeps forgetting her riding gear.........
