I was just wondering because I find it incredibly hard to ride without one...especially in winter. It's just so depressing... My horse oozes potential and I know he could go so far if I had the facilities. How does everyone cope?

i don't have a school! It is really frustrating in the winter when you have a talented horse and no-where to ride. When I win the lottery I will buy a nice yard with both indoor and outdoor schools to ride in! I'll keep dreaming.... (must go and buy lottery ticket now!!)

me!

I don't cope, I throw the towel in and hack out.

In the summer, I use lessons, hire a school in wet weather and school whilst out on hacks. I am lucky though as I have some wonderful hacking routes on the Pennines, great for fitness work!

I know exactly how u feel! I'm sure some people must be getting sick of me mentioning it now too as I have posted about it a couple of times but I have ridden twice since xmas and it is started to get me down too!

I have no school and my 2 mares have severe separation anxiety, and so I can't hack out and leave one behind, and the lady I used to hack out with at a weekend in winter and evenings and weekends in summer has just had a baby.

I am just fortunate in that we have plenty grazing and so mine are out all day which is keeping them sane and I think they are quite happy with the lack of work, its just me who is starting to go a bit crazy! Luckily I have another friend who finishes uni this year and is currently horse-less but a fantastic rider and she has offered to ride with me once she is home in May

I don't have a school. I can travel over to work to use theirs as and when I can, which is maybe once a month. I also luckily have a couple of flatish stubble fields that I can school in if the ground is good.

I don't have a school, and tonight it really bugged me!!! Did briefly consider looking for new yard but thought against it as I love my yard, and if i hack 10 mins into village I can use one, and weve got 35 acres to ride around when ground OK...still I'd love one!

I have just given up great facilities so i can have my horses at home which I love. I can use a school down the road once a week, which I have to pay for.

I don't have a school although I can use the field when it dries up in the spring/summer. It does mean I can't do any schooling as such in the winter so I hack out.
I do try to do some schooling exercises on my hacks eg. leg yielding, shoulder-in, transitions - walk -trot, walk -halt etc and we try to be accurate so I'll trot to a particular tree/lamp-post then make the transition at that point to walk.
It keeps my horse interested and I don't forget how to ride!!
Saying that though, some days I'll just hack along holding the buckle!

However we do have a disused camp site which has a tarmac road in a circle shape about 400 meters long by 200 wide, so I can school on that without traffic worries. Can't canter though.

I can hire a local indoor school when I like and go to my friends school, all are a lorry ride away.

Would love a school, but my boy is very happy where he is and it is close to home, so I don't worry too much. I use my field in summer.

I actually think not having a school is good as it makes me go out in the lorry exposing him to travelling and different places. It also makes me hack out. So there are some positives.

I don't have a school and in the winter it's annoying not having any lights but can't say i really regret not having a school. I've got a field which i used all year round for schooling and jumping and although i limit the use during the winter to stop it getting churned up i don't feel any worse off than people who have the use of an arena. I only compete at RC level though.

Don't have a school and very rarely have anywhere to school, and if i do its a sloping/rough marshy field.

Very frustrating and disheartening.
But such is life.

We don't have a school but can't say it bothers us, it's easy to do a certain amount of schooling while out hacking, so we either hack or drive out.

We don't have a school but have a good sized flat field to ride in which is fairly well drained so useable most of the time. Although a school would be lovely I'm happy where we are. Our main problem is no lights so our beasts do very little over winter! They're just starting to come back into proper work now.

Up until 2 years ago, I never had a school and had to hack down the lane to hire one a few times a week. I used to school as I hacked out and used dressage competitions as schooling sessions. We did fine, my pony qualified for Pictons Novice at NPS and was always placed dressage!

Have a school now which is not the best but its ok, but I still do the above with my big boy

I dont' have one - never have so winter is always a bit hit and miss. I have a make shift manege set up with electric fencing and like now as long as the field isn't too wet then I'm ok and can school; but won't risk tearing the field up when it's wet so comes down to hacking then. Can be quite frustrating.

I wouldn't mind not having a school, if I had sensible horses. However one is the type who needs trust building and he's also very, very nappy out hacking on his own (resulting from, and in, lack of trust) and I really can't do much with him at the moment unless I school. The other is a very green cob who is strong hacking with her owner. She's fine hacking with me but I have found that the root or the problem is that she thinks she can do what she wants. She accepts that she can't with me on a hack, but her schooling is atrocious and she takes the chronic p*** out of me the whole time. Hence why I could reeeeeally do with a school! We are *meant* to be getting one (the cob's owner owns the land, and she got a school for Christmas, lucky thing!) but all has gone quiet on that front. In the meantime I am stuck with either a small slippy school where the cob is calm but we can't do much, or a large grassy field where the cob turns into a lunatic and tanks around. *sigh* I miss being on livery at a yard with a school!

you are a physcic (sp!!)!!When it is wet and the feilds are cr*p and all the jumps from the field put away from the rain you just think what can i do!!!!!I am sure if i had a school i would have gotten much further with zak, although i am rather proud of what we manage to acheive without one

I constantly dream of having a school-all you who do think yourselves vvvv lucky!!I have one which is about 3/4 hour hack, but it costs 10/hour and i dont have enough money to use it all the time!v depressing!Bring on the summer when the ground is dry and we can start schoolong in fields again!!horaaa!

Nope, I haven't got one - first thing that's on the list if the right lottery numbers come up! I try to do some schooling out hacking - but also have a problem with friends' mare with separation anxiety so can only ride when someone can ride her. Not that it's driving me crazy or anything!

We haven't got a school - but luckily have access to two 60x20 rubber arenas within 10 minutes hacking distance. Main problem is in winter when too dark for daughter to hack to arenas after school, and also too wet for her to use our field.

This summer is going to be my first without a school as we've just bought our own place and move in 6 weeks.

Its going to be quite the culture shock for me i think, considering i have access to two indoors and 3 outdoors atm :*(

Theres an area at the new place thats been fenced off for schooling, but its not ideal

OH has promised me faithfully that we'll have an arena put down in the autumn before the bad weather kicks in. I think my boy will be having a lazy summer tbh ;p
