I do. I always like people to say what's on their minds - don't see why a horse should be any different! Keep us on our toes. I've known a few lazy riders I would have liked to put on a good mare to wake them up.
Because I'm not the most experienced of riders, but I am a conscientious person and I'm striving to improve, I love that mares give me loads of feedback on whether I'm doing it right or wrong. I loved my mare - she never had unjustified tantrums, really.
Im not fussed, but I the horse I sold last year was a mare and I shall never forget her- she was my world, worst decision i ever made to sell, and she was sweet as chocolate!
well we have had one bad experience with a mare, she was a right bitch, no matter what we tried nothing seemed to work with her, ended up selling her for a big loss, ( infact saw her on horsemart a few weeks ago ) we sold her to a man and he seemed to get along fine with her, It didnt put us off though as we have bought another mare roxy, and she is the sweetest thing, I would trust her with anything not the least bit mareish thankgod !
me - love them loads - got 5 of them atm!! They range from the most adorable mare who follows you around, to a grumpy old bag who scowls most of the time - wouldnt be without her though. Wouldnt have a gelding.
I love my two, Lottie and i have a very strong bond in fact she is more like a dog !! and Mouse is as gentle as a lamb neither have ever been mareish, Mouse gets a little sensitive at times but it's only because she tries to hard to please and panics when she does it wrong or thinks she done it wrong

I love mares!! I've got 4 atm and haven't had a gelding since 1999! I dont go out particularly looking for a mare, its just turned out that ive ended up with them for quite a while! x
Think my liver chestnut mare was responsible for giving all other chestnut mares a bad name as she totally lives up to the chestnut mare myth!! Shes so unpredictable but really clever and such a scopey little mare- she's either brilliant or brutal!! Shes also totally neurotic and spoilt- I love her to bits though and she taught me so much. I so believe the saying that ' you can tell a gelding, you can ask a stallion but you must discuss it with a mare'. You have to explain everything clearly to my gelding or he gets confused where as if my mare agrees on something she'll go out of her way to please. When I was looking for a new horse a while ago I didn't really have a preference for a mare or gelding but have ended up with another little chestnut mare!! She's been very laid back and easy so far but I've only had her a month so time will tell!!
One of the mares at the yard really stands out - her personality truly shines through. For this reason, I think, she really plays up for novice riders - where possibly a gelding would plod through the minor mistakes? - but goes beautifully for more experienced riders and is a pleasure to ride and watch.
I think mares take a particular way of being handled. Where as geldings tend to be able to cope with most handlers.
I find Ellie is very strict about being handled fairly. Shout or smack her for being naughty and she responds instantly but woe betide you if you treat her unfairly
I once smacked her on the shoulder for not going through a gateway (I was chatting to my friend and didn't really have my mind on the job). She was genuinely nervous of the gateway but because I was talking I was like 'get on with Ellie what are you messing about at?' and she looked round at me as though to say 'How dare you smack me for being frightened!' Then she turned round and took off for about 5 steps and stopped. It was as though she was saying 'do you get the messge now!?'
Mares seem to give you 110% if you treat them fairly and 'discuss' things with them rather than demanding. I love mares, although I do agree that geldings are more willing to cuddle.
I love my mare smudge she was my first pony she's taught me everything i know and made me a better rider and at 21 is still mazing and gets better with age
I have two of the darn things. Actually I like mares, they're very different to geldings and far more confrontational I've found. For me though you cant beat a cheeky gelding, though I agree some geldings lack character and spark.
(sorry Boss I seem to be following you around the board this morning!)
I am a gelding person, I think that is because I have a strong personality
2 mares I owned and competed, Lucera and Emily, well Em was like a gelding anyway and Lucy was SO SO super sensitive and pumped with adrenaline I really loved the madness of her
Now I have a new mare, and I am having to learn awfully quickly about ASKING her to do stuff
Am having lessons as the mo to stop me getting into arguements with her, but we are getting there and when I do stop TELLING her I reckon she is going to be very special indeed
