I have noticed quite a lot of older and some very old people out hunting. In fact sometimes they almost seem to outnumber the younger riders. I have no doubt it brings them great pleasure and is a purpose in life.
Going to send that to my Dad - its his ambition! he is 76 and rides most mornings in Eping Forest on his 16hh Lipizzaner cross Arab. Amazingly he can still mount from the floor on a good day - if he has to. The horse is now 20 but we have had him since he was 6. I did dressage with him when he was younger then when I couldn't afford the upkeep he became my Dad's happy hacker and has been happy with that ever since. But even at 20 Luke is no plod - he is still fresh and spooky on a winters day. My dad said that he has quite a reputation as that crazy old man on the white horse.
I thought Luke would be my dad's last riding horse but in fact I think Luke (who is arthritic anyway) will run out of steam before my father does ....
There's hope for me then.Just turned 53 and try to ride most days on the section D and like to hack out the bigger horses for my daughter to keep them fit for competing.Have just started doing the odd dressage competition and was just remarking the other day to a local riding school owner, who competes at a highish level, that many years ago i never thought i would be doing dressage. But hey ho,age diminished confidence jumping, moves goal posts and enables us to try new disciplines.
