How many rugs do you put on your horse?

At the moment it is still very mild, 10C and hasn't dropped beneath zero all week.

One mare has a mw turnout on overnight, none of the others have anything. If I do get around to rugging they will have one mw rug each, I only have mw's come to think of it.

If they are uncomfortable one way or the other, then I'll do something about it.

Same here Enfys. I have the old codger in a M/W turnout overnight, naked through the day. Same with a pregnant mare. All of the others are unrugged and I don't generally rug until we are consistently in minus figures. When winter proper comes, about half of the horses here are rugged, all M/W rugs. The only time I put on extra rugs underneath is when we have the nights of -30 to -40 nights.

I will rug one of my 2 year olds this winter though as she will be being backed and I do find that rugging them does help in the process of backing. She will only have a token M/W one on - she's semi-feral so doesn't need a rug but she does need to get used to having things touching her. I will have to catch and twitched her though to do this as there is absolutely no way in a month of Sundays that she would stand for having anything put on her, touching her is bad enough

I am one of the bad over-ruggers too

. My boy wears two or three rugs of various weights according to what the weather is doing but he's obviously not been warm enough as I had to clip for the second time last night... Will now be wearing a waffle sheet, heavy 3/4 neck rambo and full neck middleweight on top, with the middleweight taken off during the day. His leg wraps will also be making an appearance a of tonight, and if it gets colder I've got a full neck fleece and a lightweight quilt sitting waiting. Mind you I do stay in Scotland and my stable is at the front of the yard so it can get a little chilly...

My girl feels the cold very easily at night, and at the moment has three rugs - a cotton summer sheet (I like to have cotton close to her skin), a Rambo fleece and a middleweight Masta quilt. When she is clipped again in a fortnight's time, I will probably substitute the fleece for the new big Witney blanket I have just bought

One rug- MW, no neck cover, and is toasty warm.
MW turnout during day.
Full clip except for legs.
We haven't even had frozen water taps yet.

My TB tends to overheat in the stable and outside if he's got too heavy/too many rugs on and starts sweating on his shoulders. At the moment he is in his stable out of the rain wearing just a Thermatex and he's fully clipped. His stable is pretty small and made totally of wood. For some reason it stays very cosy in there. I'm almost hoping the weather does get colder so I can put a proper weighted rug on him!!
