It becomes an obsession. One of mine has 20 fleeces and sheets. Must have at least 100 rugs for my 7. Takes up a stable just to house them . OOPS have just ordered more from Hopevalley sales.

These figures are ridiculous!

I have one horse and he has a fly rug, cooler, lw turnout, hw turnout, fleece and lw stable rug.

I would say to those who have tons of rugs (particularly the poster who has about 100 in a stable) have you sorted through them recently and before buying new ones? Perhaps you could do a 'good deed' and donate some of them to a horse rescue charity?

Well, if you discount fly rugs, I have one between two ponies! Depending on where I end up when I move, though, this could increase significantly, as Henry now drops weight in winter, so I will need a couple for the little sausage if I have no shelter. Some of you lot need a helpline! :D

I have 6 horses... 4 are tb or tb x and we have 2 used rugs between the lot

They grow the most amazing winter coats and only the oldies had one on for three days in total last winter. We have loads of backup rugs if ever necessary but in general they are the warmest on the yard and toasty even when others are shivering

I think having a spare of each weight and with and without necks is reasonable. My horses live out and when your rugs get wet through you don't want to have them in a rug which is either going to make them sweat or make them cold, whilst the wet through rug is drying. If my horses came in at night I wouldnt have as many rugs. My older horse loses a lot of condition in winter, so she has more rugs than my young horse.

my 18 year old mare has:
2 or 3 lightweights without necks
2 medium weights without necks
1 medium weight with neck (she did have 2 until she ripped the neck of one)
1 heavy weight without neck
1 heavy weight with half neck
2 heavy weights with necks
If she is ridden and clipped through out the winter i use all of these rugs!
and
1 fleece/cooler
1 medium stable rug
1 heavy weight stable rug with neck
2 fly rugs
yes i do have 17 rugs for one horse :p, but i dont see the problem if i use them all.

my two year old is slightly more tough so only has one of each weight, 2 fleeces and a stable rug with neck.

Another sheepish user with many rugs, and just one horse

I have 14, not counting extra liners (+3) or exercise sheets (+2). In my vague defence horse came with quite a few, but mostly multiples of similar type (eg 3x mediumweight stable polys) but since they're all in pretty good condition and of a useful size (6'3'') I can't bring myself to get rid of them in case I need them in the future!

My horse only has so many rugs as she trashed them all (barbed wire fields) so ended up buying quite a few spares.

I have about 10.

I have about 10 rugs. Last winter I went back to basics and used one medium weight turnout rug and one light weight stable rug for the whole winter. Horse was fine, less rugs to clean at the end of winter. I've become quite annoyed at my shopaholic tendencies lately.

As a child my pony had two New Zealand rugs, one to wear and one in case of rips, plus a summer sheet to wear at shows and that was it. We all seem to collect so much unnecessary stuff these days.

Ok, I'll join in :D

Big Fuzzy has:
Turnouts: 2 x LW, 2 x MW & 1 x HW (this last one only worn for around 2 weeks every winter)
Stable: 1 x MW polywarm, 2 x LW fleece
& 1 x thermatex for going out in :)

I have 2 of some as occasionally we need to swap one over if one gets damaged or leaks etc.
The 'main' ones she lives in are the MW turnout & the polywarm in the middle of winter. The LW's are for spring & autumn with fleece in stable if needed.

Tiny Fuzzy has: 0 rugs - should she phone the BHS welfare? :D

Both are currently wearing 0 rugs :D

Rosie has -
1 fleece
1 thermatex
1 thick under rug (that I also use as a stable rug)
1 LW with no neck
1 MW with removable neck cover
1 MW but with a lot of lining with neck

I think that's quite good :) If it gets cold I stick the under rug or fleece on underneath one of the MWs.

At the last count I had 35 rugs for two horses!!! Not counting anymore he he :) Currently in the process of selling/swapping all my 6'9'' and 7' rugs for 6'3''.
New horse is getting a Premier Equine rug with all the liners, so will have one outer rug with 3 liners and 2 different neck covers.

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a rug junkie . . . it really is a disease :(.

GreyDonk came with five rugs - three nice quality H/W turnouts, a thermatex and a show fleece. Since then I've acquired the following:

2 fly rugs
another thermatex
3 summer sheets
2 fleeces
4 lightweight turnouts
2 mediumweight turnouts
2 quarter sheets (one hi-vis)

Most of them spend time hanging on rug rails ;).

I think I have 9 for my boy, ok maybe 10, but probably use the same 2 lightweight turnouts as and when needed. He lives out more or less 24/7 and is welsh, so really don't need the others! Didn't think I had that many to be honest, oops!

I have been downsizing recently so my two each have a Duo with HW and LW liners. Also have a rainsheet each and a fly sheet each. For the stable they each have a fleecy LW rug and a heavier rug. So, they have 5 rugs each :) .....

and in my garage there are another 20 or so rugs... including 2 beautiful Thermatex rugs which are way too nice to ever go on a horse... and the 2 Rambo HWs which I don't really need but can't part with either... Gah, obviously I'm not completely over my rug obsession yet

My 14.2 Irish X has:

3 fleeces
2 fly rugs
1 lightweight turnout with neck
2 lightweight turnouts without neck
3 heavy weight turnouts
2 medium weight turnouts
2 medium stable rugs
2 heavyweight stable rugs
2 snuggly duvet things!

So that takes the total to 19

I too have far too many rugs to count- the perils of owning horses of different sizes and not being able to reuse them. A far cry from my pony days when the ponies had a NZ rug, a stable rug and one of those holey string vest type coolers. I dont recall any of our ponies being unhappy back then either. Have a feeling we fuss too much over our horses- the rug companies must be laughing all the way to the bank over the fact that we all "need" a rug in every weight and colour to cover every single eventuality! Im quite embarrassed about the fact i "had" to buy my big guy a medium weight turn out yesterday just to match his "colour scheme"- to offset this if someone can provide me with details of a charity who would gladly take some big sized rugs i can definitely donate some to horses less fortunate than my own.

mine each have:
lw in and out
mw in and out
hw in and out
2 x stable sheet (one nice for
shows).
they're all different sizes so can't really share and I like them to have a dry rug to change into
if its been bucketing.

any ones I replace get donated to a local charity once I've cleaned them. :) they got nearly a full wardrobe when one of mine grew.

I might be a junkie too.

Spider has:

Four fleeces (although two of them are a bit small and rub so don't get used)
One lightweight stable rug
Two medium weight stable rugs (although one is a bit small so a definite spare) with detachable necks
One heavy weight stable rug with a detachable neck
One no fill turnout
One lightweight turnout
One medium turnout with no neck
Two medium turnouts with detachable necks
One heavyweight turnouts

So that would be 14 rugs for 1 horse

Will charities take used rugs with little rips in them provided they are clean? The two fleeces that don't fit very well are in good useable condition except for a couple of little rips. I don't think I have one I can get to locally. Is there one that takes them by post?
