and what type do you think a horse should have. My share horse has not had any rugs until I got him and so far I have bought a cooler rug (Amigo) and a MW turnout rug from Robinsons. He is a cob x arab. I dont want to spend loads but what else do you think he would need. Hes out 24/7 during the summer and is bought in att night during the winter.

If he isn't clipped then nothing.

M mare is a b*tch to clip so wears alot to keep her warm afterwards so I don't have to fight to clip her more than needed.

oooohhhhhhhh ....

ok mollie has everything as she lives out most of the time... hers are pretty much all turnouts although we do have some stable ruggles for her

chester... i have just brought him a whoooollllee new wardrobe!

LW stable with no neck
stable underrug with neck
HW stable with neck
Summer sheet turnout with neck (detachable)
MW turnout half neck and standard neck
HW turnout with detachable neck
fleece rug
he will have a show rug whn he starts going out!!!

Mine are out all summer & in at night winter and they have a HW & MW for winter & a LW/rain sheet for summer & a cooler is always very handy. I find that's all they need really & I have the ones not in use cleaned whilst they are using the other ones.

Mine lives out all the time and has:-
Heavyweight turnout, half neck
Spare heavyweight
Medium weight turnout
Rain sheet
Under rug
Stable rug
Fleece
Thermatex
An old string vest!
Plus various old rugs which are hanging around which I can plunder for spare parts.

Mine come in at night and go out during the day neither will let me clip them however much sedation they have so i keep them nice and toasty so they dont grow winter coats which seems to work as there winter coats are much like a 'normal' horses summer one! They have: cooler, fleece, lightweight stable (115g), rain sheet, lightweight turnout (100g), mid/lightwieght turnout one with neck one without both 200g, mid/lightweight stable 220g, middle weight turnout one with neck one without one has 250g the other has 300g, middleweight stable one has 300g the other 360g, then heavyweight rug one with neck one without one has 350g the other 400g and then heavy stable one has 500g the other 425g. And then a few spare rugs that i use for spare parts and to cover thing over! Oh and full neck fly rugs! I know i'm a bit ott but i like to have rug with and without necks for when its raining or windy or cold but sunny or if one gets wet and also i hate layering! No offence i know lots of people do but i just cant lug loads of rugs on and off it takes too long!

is he bothered by flies? If so the a rambo fly rug is useful as it doubles up a very lightweight rug for summer rain/wind. Used on a thoroughbred that can't stand the rain tickling her as its runs off.
Most cobs need very little in the way of rugs and the only addition I would add to your collection is a second MW rug with a half neck. Avoid a fixed full neck as these can make a horse very hot, if the weather turns warmer later in the day. You will need a second rug in winter as a fall back, whilst no.1 rug is dried or mended etc. If one of the rugs you have fits him well. take it with you to the saddlery and compare the ones on offer with regard to length depth and neck shape. It will save a lot of faffing around with rugs that don't fit.

Far too many... My TB who is in at night has...
A heavyweight Fal new zealand with neck
A medium weight Fal new zealand wug
A light weight fal new zealand
A rambo fly rug
A heavy weight Rhino stable rug with detachable neck
A medium weight Fal stable under rug with neck
2 medium weight poly (one for indoor, one for outdoor)
A light weight poly
A fleece
A string vest
A cooler
An exercise blanket
And I'm sure more if I dig around!!!

I would probably get him another turnout rug, because if one gets soaked it can take more than a night to dry them out - so its useful to have a spare. Or if the little horrors rip one.....

And maybe a stable rug in case he is ever ill. But if he has coped well without rugs I would not over complicate things. You dont want to end up with wimps like mine who need Duvets and refuse to go out in the rain

I've recently got another horse that did not come with any rugs. I'm building up his wardrobe slowly. Ebay & local free-ads have been a great way to get quality 2nd hand rugs.

I prefer T/O rugs with detachable neck covers as they are more versatile.

I have ended up buying my 2 yr old TB x too many rugs as he is a little devil who has a habit of trying to destroy brand new rugs in every way possible. I have tried to keep it to just the basics as he seems to be out growing everything. For the winter he had a H-Zone medium turnout rug with a fleece rug underneath when it was very cold. I brought him a padded stable rug for the very cold days which somehow he managed to destroy. He also has 2 light turnouts rugs for when its just showering but he doesn't wear them much now as i have moved him to new yard and horses don't go out if weather is bad which i don't mind as he suffered from rainscold from lack of protection for weather from previous owner. Probably would be best to just think what your defiantley going 2 need and just get a few basic rugs and you can always add to it when you need to. This way you wont be wasting money.
