I am trying to order in everything i need for winter (cheaper to order it early, and I can buy bit by bit instead of getting to october and having to pull it all out at once!)

Now im starting with rugs. He has never come in during winter before, hence I need a stable rug.
Now I have looked and like the look of the amigo insulator, but it comes in 2 weights, medium and heavy, does this mean i need 2 stable rugs for different temperatures or am i just being stupid. What if he gets too hot in the heavy, but is chilly in the medium. What weights do you all have for your stabled horses, or do you not rug at all when in?!

I have been looking and have realised I already own turnout rug wise 3 lightweights, 2 medium and 2 heavy, 2 fly rugs, cooler and a fleece. So how many rugs do you all have and do you actually use them all ?!

the short answer too many!!!!!!!!!!!!! i actually use all my rugs at some time or another, but i use some more than others.

I have... 2 sweetitch rugs, 1 lightweight rug, 1 medium weight with detatchable neck.
I would have more but not many rugs come in a 7'6, he is never stabled, and if you put a heavy weight on him, even in snow, he sweats like nobody's business as he is so furry.
My bank balance thanks him for being such a big, hardy horse as it prevents me from buying too many!

You dont really need a stable rug, you can get by without one as modern turnouts are breathable so can be left on in the stable - plus the horses heat dries them out quickly too if they're wet

But if you do want one (I have several and mine all live out! However they are useful for chucking on at competitions etc.) - I love my FAL, its so cosy. But I also have a lighter weight Weatherbeeta one which is good. Generally, I have 2 - one heavy, one light. It depends on your horse, you might not need a really warm one at all. You can also chuck on the fleece as well if need be.

BTW, you're question how many rugs do I need - well, bloody loads if you're me. I collect them it seems

I'm selling heaps on eBay, already sold 4 old cooler rugs last week and got a huge pile to get through!

ooh I didnt know you could leave a TO on in the stable, although i might just need a stable rug just incase

He is an arab, so i feel the need to wrap him up as if i dont he does the whole shivering, sad face, tail to the wind thing to make me feel guilty!

Ah ebay i didnt think of that!

I have one rug per animal, apart from the cob who also has an additional one of a fly-sheet as he gets SI. I (or rather, they)have absolutely no need of any more.

It depends if you have a chilly or a hot horse. But as a guideline I'd say you need a sheet (you already have), a light, medium and heavyweight.
Ok so you could probably get away without a lightweight.

I think you need different weights because you wouldn't want to use the same rug if it was -4 or 5/6 degrees for example.

Mine needs more than that, but each is individual.

i have...*pauses to count on fingers* 17 rugs for Pippa, pretty shocking, and i have actually used them all

Lol
But I think the basic,
Cooler, LW Stable, MW Stable
LW Turnout, MW turnout, HW turnout
Will suffice

I recently cleared out my mega store of rugs and as I'm currently down to one horse (for the next 3 wks anyway!) I'm left with:

1 fleece cooler
1 lightweight stable rug
1 medium weight stable rug (with detachable hood)
1 liner for above rug so I can make it up to a heavy weight
1 medium weight turnout
1 heavy weight turnout

All in all not bad I think

I have far to many, it's sending them off to be washed that's costs more than buying them in the first place!

I have a fly rug, a lightweight turnout, then I have a heavy fal turnout that my horse has in or out in the winter, I hardly take it off unless I'm riding - it's fab!

I don't use stable rugs, just sheets under the turnouts if they need an extra layer.

i don't think i can count all my rugs but its only cos i've collected them and don't sell them with a horse so the one 16.2 i have left has inherited lots.
my 14hh has:
1 heavy turnout with neck
1 rambo duo
1 heavy stable rug with neck
1 lightweight stable rug
1 medium turnout thats lost its waterproof so used as stable
1 medium turnout off a 16.1 shares it with 16.2
1 fly rug
1 fleece from 16.2
3 show rugs (2 winter 1 summer)
and he has less than the other one oops

I find it better to layer rugs so you can just take one off if they're too warm or add another if they're too cold

I don't use stable rugs - they stain easier. The modern (i.e. non New Zealand) turnouts are lightweight breathable and designed for both indoor and outdoor use.

Far too many...but have a hw turnout which he wore both inside and out last winter, a lw turnout and a cooler. Have many more which I had for my old horse, but refuse to part with cos one day my youngster WILL grow into....

WAY too many! Ned has just moved home and i was horrified when i lifted them!
1 light weight
1 medium/light
1 200g
1 300g
1 450g
1 buster trio (ie all of the above again!)
3 stable rugs
1 fleece
3 exercise sheets

A TAD OTT methinks lol

Quite a few

Horse:
2 LW stable
1 HW stable
2 LW no fill turnout no neck
1 LW combo turnout
3 MW turnout no necks
1 MW half neck/high neck turnout
2 MW combo turnout
2 HW turnout combos
4 fleeces
2 exercise sheets

Mini:
1 no fill turnout
1 MW turnout

I think we must own about 40!

But the essential rugs you need are:
2 X LW Turnout rugs (in case one gets soaked)
1 X LW Stable rug
1 x MW Turnout rug
1 X MW Stable rug
1 X HW turnout rug
1 X HW stable rug
1 x Fleece/cooler rug

A fly rug is also useful to have but not essential. Hope this helps.
