How many rugs?

I layer my rugs, and acording to weather/temperature i add, remove rugs as appropriate. I also feed adlib good quality hayledge. My horses rugs are bought a bit bigger so there is extra room in the to accomidate the layering. My rugs dont rub him and he is able to roll/move round and have a good gallop. So i dont see a problem with how i am rugging him.

No snow, lovely and sunny, -9C as I speak and they are all naked and sunbathing. MW's back on in a couple of hours.

Wow! The shetland (unclipped) stabled next to Ron has a LW t/o when it's wet so he doesn't get too dirty, but is otherwise naked, both in and out. He's toasty-warm under his big shaggy fur (I checked last night!). Depite being in his mid-30's and with the appetite of a sparrow.

Amazing how horses are so individual isn't it?

TB-fully clipped and in full work, is in 2 x 350 rugs, one with a full neck and a thermatex whether in or out.

ISH-fully clipped-1 x 350 normal neck, 1 x 450 full neck, thermatex.

shetland-unclipped-full neck 350g with lightweight underneath when out, at night has a thermatex, wool blanket and stable rug.

native X pony-fully clipped, has 2x 350 full neck rugs plus a 120gm under rug on when in, and another 350g full neck on top when out.

Dear God!!!

Do they not fall over under the weight. As stated my clipped out 18yo eventer is out 24/7 in a heavyweight t/o with a 150g liner rug only of its minus temperatures. Bloody hell!

I do like the horse on the right of your signature - more piccies needed

These posts make me chuckle............

With the current weather,

My competition horses, (fully clipped out every two weeks) have on;

summer sheet
LW stable
MW stable
HW stable with full neck,

HW comes off during the day

the dealing horses, clipped out but with legs and half head on;

summer sheet
LW stable
MW stable
MW Stable

Top MW comes off during the day

The 3yo's, stabled but not clipped.

Summer sheet
MW stable

Anyone want to criticise me for my rugging decisions??

It all depends on the horse - we shouldn't criticise other people's rugging unless if we don't know the full story. I've always hated the idea of 'over-rugging' and agree with a previous post on here, that it's better for them to be slightly too cool than too hot.

HOWEVER, last year I bought a WB who shed a ton of weight over the winter - he was on good quality haylage, as much as he wanted, good quality hard feed (3 quite large feeds a day - argh!! Bankrupt!!) and no more work than he was on in summer. I thought it might be because he was a bit stressy back then and it took me by surprise as I've never had a horse that lost condition that quickly, so I caught it a bit late, but despite a better planned routine this year he's still losing the weight - the only thing that helps a bit is keeping him very warm, with lots of rugs on (although to be fair I don't put HW's on top of HW's, he just has lots of thinner layers so I can add and remove as appropriate.) Don't get me wrong, he's in great condition now as I bulked him up a bit prior to winter so he has enough (hopefully) to see him through, but the extra rugs are a key part of keeping him happy and healthy.

So, after all that waffle, what I'm basically saying is they're all different, there's not any one way which suits all, so don't base your regime (and I don't just mean rugs!) on anyone elses, just figure out what suits you and your horse.

Here endeth the lesson (and my first ever post on here!!!)!!! ;o)

i should clarify that said shetlands only job in life is to accompany the big horses to shows, and if he's allowed to get super fluffy he get REALLY sweaty on the lorry and his long coat then takes an age to dry out=he gets chilled, even thermatex'd or thatched.
he's kept well rugged and does not have your typical shetty coat, he looks like a show pony lol! this means he can travel on the lorry in comfort with no sweating or chilling, but also means he needs decent rugging in winter.

horse in siggy is same one! just winter clipped V summer coat! i put a few piccies of my last lesson in CR, but can provide more if required
smile.gif
he's a warmblood in a TB body lol!!!

and nah, they roll buck fart leap and galllop happily.

Unclipped QH (very fine coat like a TB) turned out in a Rhino HW with neck.
Currently wearing an Amigo LW and Weatherbeeta HW in the stable (big, airy, cold barn) as the dog chewed her Mark Todd 400g rug!
She feels the cold and gets really grumpy if not kept warm, but I have found that rugs made of lighter materials and with nylon linings stop her getting rubbed and uncomfortable when she's got a lot of clothes on
smile.gif

Just the one rainsheet each to keep them clean - out 24/7 with growing out high chaser clips, shortly to be de-fluffed completely and then all they have is their 200g rugs out 24/7, never cold and not stuffed full of food either, just enough to keep them from starving...........

I use winter to slim them down, they are never cold thou even at dawnbreak this morning they were toasty warm, covered in icicles and snow, pleased to see food yes obviously as the white stuff is covering the field but not cold at all.

One of the major problems with over-rugging is that over time, the pony/horse loses the ability to self regulate their temperature very well, more rugs go on to compensate which just makes the problem even worse, coats don't grow so well so winter coat gets thinner so more rugs are needed - big viscious circle unfortunately hence i would rather under-rug slightly.

This obviously doesn't apply to older / sick / re-couperating - very thin skinned etc horses as they need the help but even full TB's are quite capable of living out all yr unrugged if acclimatised carefully.

So after all that waffle, why the feck have i got so many rugs in so many different weights and colours - LOL And why the feck have i just bought two more this week just because they were on offer!

my 3 live out so my arab who feels the cold has a middleweight turnout over a heavy weight stable rug...nice and toasty, my yearling has 2 middle weights on again toasty...and my old ID mare has just had a heavy weight put on instead of a medium weight as she was a bit chilly today....

Blanket clipped section Bs- MW with necks day and night.
Blanket clipped CX-MW with neck in the day, LW at night.
Belly/apron clip welsh PB- MW no neck in and out.
Shettie blanket clipped- MW no neck by day, LW with neck at night.
Unclipped welsh B's, section A foal and Bxriding pony all un rugged

QR - I really can't understand why any horse would need 700gm+ of rugs on them?!
confused.gif
It sounds horribly uncomfortable to me

Mine are out 24/4, in temps down to -8 at times, and have one rug on each. The veteran has just gone up from a MW to HW rhino, and my other girl is in a LW Rambo. They have ab lib haylage to keep them warm
smile.gif

jays fine with his 2 HW rugs on, i have different makes and weights of HW and having had him 3 years i know whats the best way to rug him on the side of the pentland hills in a open field
smile.gif

QR dear god I cant believe how many rugs some of them are wearing. an unclipped shetland in rugs? why, unless its ancient and needs a bit of help?

hmm, still, being near Edinburgh and having some idea where you are and having been caught out in a snow storm in the Pentlands in late september

and knowing that temps up there are a good 10 degrees colder than where we are...

welshies arent as hardy as exmoors anyhow

people do forget what the temp can be like here and how quick it drops, its been -7 at midnight in our field the last week or so

not very fair to clip a pony and then not rug it. ^^^

my unclipped welsh D has a 400grm rug which he wears day and night, he doesn't get too warm. If he was clipped he would have another 200grm under rug in this weather.

I do agree, think it's bizarre that people overrug so much.

2 of our have no rugs on - they are horses after all.
one has a lw rhino and the other a mw... None are clipped and have adlib hay so they will be fine.

end of the day it depends on the horse/the conditions and area its kept in and what the owner chooses to do.

i find it disturbing the amount of people who clip then turn out naked to shiver fat off, would they like to be thrown out in winter naked cos they are too fat?

so you'd have a welsh D in 600g of rugs for a chaser clip

My luso has a long but extremely fine coat and he is just right atm in his amigo 350.

the exxie in question has a slightly extended bib clip carried out over a month ago. not only has he not dropped any weight but is exceedingly toasty-they have a great shelter, a deep shavings bed to shame most stabled horses and ad lib hay and still a fair bit of grass.

Awww I nearly started a thread like this just to p*ss everyone off, why do people feel the need to get SO puritanical about what rugs someone's horse is wearing
confused.gif
You dont know the horse, you dont know the weather, you dont know the shelter available/type of stable etc etc etc...

My TB is a VERY poor doer and drops weight really easily, he is also fully clipped, so he has ad lib hay at night and tonight he is wearing a HW Amigo stable rug, a 200g under rug with neck cover and a HW Rhino stable rug with neck cover...

Why?

Because tonight is it scheduled to be much colder than last night, and when I went to see him last night at 9pm he was cold wearing the Amigo rug with the HW Rhino over it. How do I know this? Because I touched him and felt his body temperature/the temperature of his ears/how tucked up he was etc...

So I changed him last night to the under rug with neck cover plus the Rhino HW and he was fine, tonight is colder so he has another one on
smirk.gif

Previously he has been out during the day in just a HW Rhino turnout with neck cover, but today I put the HW Amigo rug underneath too as the wind chill is just something else around us
crazy.gif

Oh and yes he can move perfectly well, I changed his rugs before I fed him and mucked out tonight, so could see him walking around very happily

Yes but on the other hand I know horses who's owners overrug so much they are dripping with sweat in the morning and the stable looks like a sauna!

Then the worry that the horse is losing weight so up the feed - more central heating for the horse - more sweating -and so it goes on. Sad

but we are not all like that and neither are our horses, my sec a gets rugged up as she doesn't grow a thick coat and she also gets rain scald, shes happy wandering about rugged up, if unrugged she stands in a corner with her ears down and arse into the wind, utterly miserable, and dont get me started on the woose that is jay
