Should you have in an average size stable, without rubber matting?
YO put down 2 bales yesterday so it is a lovely bed, do I just continue with a bale a week? or more?

Sorry, have never mucked out shavings before, as you can probs guess

Any useful tips/info much appreciated!

I started off with 2 bales on top of rubber mats and I personally wouldnt have considered it enough without mats. It also got dirty very quickly and I couldnt cope with using tweezers to muck out with after he had stomped all the poo in!!!

I have now after 10 days had to add another bale, but I have mats and minimal bedding... about an inch over half the floor. Does not look very cozy, but then neither does the field and he lays down in that!!!

Snap! Mine have rubber mats and literally a sprinkling of shavings across half the stable at the back...... ( I seem to have the worlds messiest (sp) geldings!) Easy to clean out, just sweep and replace!

Thanks guys!
Sorry, forgot to add she doesn't really need banks, so alot of that goes onto the bed instead of topped up at the sides! Don't know whether this would make a huge difference? I will see how things are on Saturday - if needs be then I can fork out some money (instead of my parents) for an extra bale a week, so she has two bales a week.
Thanks for your help - Really want rubber mattings LOL - I miss them!

hi without the rubber matting I would usually make the shavings about 4-6 inches deep min. Agree that rubber matting is great :-)

jeez, feeling really awful now. we can get a bale a week included in the price, but as far as I kow we can pay for extra, so okay there. arghhh I want rubber matting - just realised how flipping spoilt I was at last yard!

Without rubber matting id lay between 4-5 depending on bed depth. What you must remember is that new shavings are fluffy and move easily so you need a deep bed to start with untill they have setteled down or they move and your horse will end up on conctrere.

I never used banks and had a 12 by 12 stable and with her just in and night i used 2 on a good week and 3 on a bad week. Im now on straw and save loads on bedding.

It just depends on how much you take out as to how much you need to repalce.

When my two were both on shavings I'd lay 6 bales (massive stables) and one on them would need 1 bale per week and the other would need between 1 & 2. They are both really clean though....

I have 12x12 stables without rubber matting. To start a bed off I put down 4 bales then 1 every week. If you feel worried just buy a couple more bales then the 1 bale each week should be fine. I would put tiny banks too make it look pretty and to try and get horse to lie in the middle of the stable.

When I first put ben in his stable I put 8 bags of shavings down but initally had bought 10 and then I had 2 from my weekly but I put them down over a period of time when he needed them.

He now has 2 bales of shavings a week and occasionally a 3rd bag when the shavings arent so good. I have always give my horses a decent size bed though wouldnt want anything happening if they slipped or they couldnt get up.

Yes, I will do a bank at the back but not at the sides - she's never needed them, and there was quite a bit of shavings stacked up at the side when the YO was laying it all down.
I'll buy 2 or so bales and pop them in on the weekend, so she has equivilant of a 4 bale bed, then continue with one bale a week and so how we go. She is going out till 4ish everyday, so that helps with cleanlieness a little!
Thanks for your help everyone.

i think i measured my stable at 13x14 and initially i used 7 bags to start a deep litter but that was with big bankings, that i pinch clean off when i muck out

so id prob say about 3 if got rubber matting and doesnt need bankings

I then top up with 1 bag per week. Sometimes can last 8-9 days or sometimes 6, depending how messy horse has been
