hi, i have been feeding hay for years and its great bit i sneeze all the time with it, but i dont with haylage, so i cant handle the big bales as no tractor, but i could handle the small haylage, how many small sqaure bales of hay would you say is in it, as they cost more. i pay £2.75 for my sqaure hay how much is small haylage. how many horses would 1 feed, my horses is outside 24/7 they have shelter ect and i have licks and minerals for them but i normally feed the hay so just for my own benifit e.g stop me sneezing, i was thinking of changing next year, but only if it is simialr costs. someone said there is 3-4 bales in a small haylage but it only looks like 1 to me. any help would be great.

farm made stuff usually 1 small bale hay = 1 small bale of haylage

horsehage - 3/4 small bale of hay = 1 small bale of haylage

You will need to feed at least the same amount by volume, but should be able to reduce hard feed
 
You get hay very cheap, around here good hay is about £5 a bale and haylage around £7.50 and they both last me about the same amount of time. Mine is out half the time on good grazing and gets through a bale in 3 days but will need more as the weather gets worse. Depends on your horse size, work etc. Haylage weighs a bit more but has higher water content so it would. I love it because I don't have to soak it and the stuff we get is lovely. You need to use it up within about 4 days anyway.
 
when you work out the extra cost of the haylage (assuming your hay is nice and not all wasted and trodden in) you might fall over and hurt yourself with the shock! As others have said, small bale haylage (eg a bag of Horsehage) isnt much more than a 1:1 with a bale of hay.....

Is there any way you can soak your hay? That might solve the dust issue and also if its dusty for you, it's dusty for your horses lungs too. Given you are getting hay at a very good price I would be reluctant to switch.

Also unless you need them to gain weight, make sure the haylage isnt too rich (ie not early cut ryegrass, you want a nice late cut timothy type). Otherwise you could have lami risk from weight gain or colic risk.

Now we all just need to know where you get hay that price!

hay is cheaper here, which is great but you can also get hay for £2.00 but i pay £2.75 and i swear it is like gold, it is amazing hay, horses just love it.
only prob is me, i sneeze with it, but haylage i dont as much. i use to get big bales years ago when we had tractor but got that many that was bad, i went back to hay and sold tractor. but as i sneeze all time i have been thinking of haylage again, but want small ones as i cant handle the big ones. its just what prices i can aford, i know i pay cheaper here but i dont get too much wages so i couldnt really aford to be paying double for same amount of haylage, think i will just have to put up with sneezing. horses love it and it is great hay so its just me, i will have to get on with it.

its not dusty hay i am allergic to hay, but i find haylage better for me as i dont sneeze much with it, hay is great its just me.

if you want that price of hay, come to northern ireland, but wages is crap, thats only thing. horses are all great doers and touch wood all great health.
