Hi all, as the post says really...trying to estimate the cost per week per horse of small straw bales. I've never used them myself....so how many do you get through a week in the winter?

Many thanks!

My horse is on box rest so in all day and night obviously and has rubber matts., i use about 1 and a half. The bales i get are about a third the size again of a "normal" size bale so i would guess 2 regular ones.

I deep litter all week, just take the poos out, and take the wet out every Saturday and put a bale of straw in each stable per week. So basically 1 bale of straw a week for 1 horse, and they have really deep thick cosy beds too

I used 21 bales a week for 4 horses, but it depends on how thick you want your bedding and how dirty the horse as some are clean and muck in the corner, geldings pee in the centre, mares tend to do it every where and some you cann't stop from eating their bedding. most straw is now wheat straw which is good in it's on way, but I loved the oat straw as 1 bale was like a duvey and the horses didn't eat it and it lasted much longer but it's difficult to get hold of it now and I had to go on to shavings as the wheat straw gave my horses breathing problems.

Under 2 bales.
I deep litter so on a Saturday when I take the wet out a new bale goes in. Then every couple of days I just top up with several slices. The extra slices aren't needed but I like to spoil my Lacey.

depends on how dirty horse is, and how you want to manage your bed? big full bed with banks mucked out to the floor every day ..around 3 bales a week, semi deep litter 2 bales a week. deep litter about 1 and a half a week.

my lot are on deep litter - they get 1/3 to 1/2 bale a day then half to a whole bale the day they're mucked out.

they've got v deep beds as they're 17hh ++ and go through to the concrete v quickly. I have no plans to put them on rubber as it#d cost a fortune and the straw/rubber combination is v v v stinky

1 bale on the day that I dig the bed out, then a couple of slices a day for rest of week
