16 days till my move and 30 until Ted's, we will be travelling him in a 3.5t rented box and im guessing the journey will take between 3 and a half and 4 hours.

i was wondering how many times you'd recommend stopping and at what intervals to offer water check hay and that hes happy and ok? (if theres anything else youd recommend checking on stops please tell me as ive only ever travelled a horse short distances)

I would do just one stop. too many and you just prlong the experience for the both of you. One stop to offer a drink should be enough as long as he is travelling well. Hope it all goes according to plan, moving horses can be such a faff! Good luck

I have travelled my horse for 3 or 4 hours to an event a few times, I just check on him when we have stopped at a service station, he has never wanted a drink or anymore hay, he has always been ok, but it is nice to just to stop every couple of hours to make sure he is ok.

Hi Pixxie,

I agree with other friends' comments that a check about half-way is a good idea on a 4 hour journey (you may want to stop somewhere for a wee also at that point?!). It's always a much better ride for horses in a box than a trailer also. Not sure if you have prof driver to do job, in which case, guaranteed great ride for him, if driving yourself, maybe get a feel for the box before you load him + set out on long journey.

If it makes you feel better, i once drove a 2 wheel rear wheel drive car + heavy Rice trailer + beloved pony, up to Scotland, late Nov, many yrs ago, got off A74 to Borders, did 70+ miles on unexpectedly ungritted road

, up hill, down dale, daren't touch brakes... not to be recommended!

But we made it! My pony was still happily munching her hay in the trailer when we arrived. The old car was 3 foot deep in sweat from me, knuckles took 3 weeks to unclench!

I think, friend, what i'm trying to say is that we humans often get more stressed about travelling horses than they do?

Wishing you a safe journey, and a happy new life in your new home for all of you, love BS x

have decided to aim for one stop to offer water, if hes looking overly hot will stop again

my mum is doing the driving of the box, but she is used to driving all sorts of wierd and wonderful things including 7.5tonne commercial lorries a scout troop in a minibus (apparently have to drive with the same kind of theory as dirving with a horse eg...no braking if it can be helped, roll to a stop ideally dont physically stop just slow down enough, ease everywhere, be prepared for everyone else to be w@nkers leave enough space for people to be w@nkers) so im hoping she will be ok, making her go out in it to practice beforehand though.

thankyou for your well wishing BS hoping all will go well x
