How many T/O rugs do you actually use?

Over the winter my mare is fully clipped and lives half in half out.

As a rug hoarder in remission ie previously making it my business to own one of every shape, make and colour, I have been pleasantly surprised to realise that I only actually possess four turnout rugs for the one horse :)

So I now make do with one lightweight, two middleweights and one heavyweight all with detachable neck covers.

How many can you say you honestly NEED for the winter

With the warmblood I had 3 - a lw, mw and hw. He lived out 24/7 and was fine with that.

I did have a fleece and an underblanket for layering.

Did have a plethora of stable rugs however, even though he only came in a handful of times!

That's pretty good! So you had one drying and one layered?

My mare likes to pickle her rugs in mud so they are only ever one for one day! Spend the next 24 hours drip drying having been hosed clean :p

I have a now totally patchworked lightweight turnout (ie, no fill), 3 medium weight turnouts (2 old and one new this winter which will only be used if lightweight one gets even more torn and has to go to rug repair hospital), one stable rug and a fleece. He came with a heavy weight combo but I've never had to use it on him yet (in 6 years!). He's very native, very hairy (bib & belly clip) and if I didn't clip him I wouldn't bother rugging him but for the mud out there...first winter I had him he wasn't rugged in stable or field and never dropped a kg!

My boy wasn't really a big mud monster. My heavyweight had a neck and was really good quality so it never really got sodden. But yes when it got washed I just layered up my MW.

ETA I love the piccie of your kitty in your sig.

Two that are used and one if the weather gets really bad. He has a no fill rain sheet, a mw that is years old is not really anyway near a medium weight - he lives in this for most of the winter and then I have a newer mw for if his old one is not warm enough...although rarely use it to be honest.
I have other rugs that are never used...a brand new mw that my OH thought I should have as a spare and a HW that has never seen the light of day either! Acouple of stable rugs that I no longer use as he wears his turnout and a sweat rug.

i hve four for my boy who lives out 24/7. he's got a lightweight, which i'm gonna put on for the first time in a mo as they've forcast torrential rain and gales tonight and tomorrow. he has a 40g, a 220g with attachable neck and a heavyweight combo. he wore them all last winter at one point or another, the heavyweight only for 2 days, but def needed it.

he's not a rug ripper thankfully, but cud prob do with having a spare 220g just in case. thats on my santa list! and i'm having him clipped for the first time nxt week, so might browse ebay for a cheap spare or two.

One of each weight/neck design and a spare :P I love rugs - although some are 10 years old now, and I've bought 'replacements' yet still keep and use everything.

However, both ponies are in the same size rug, so I can have a LW on each for example...

I've got a middle weight, heavy weight and a heavy combo! Manage quite well with just the combo but would like to get a neck cover to go on the heavy weight giving me 2 full rugs as the combo doesn't always dry off in time for the next morning :(.

3. 2 lighweights bas an old one for keeping bit cleaner and taking to shows, one mediumweight rhino which doesn't seem to get so sodden as others so is always pretty much dry by morning. Do let the mud stay on it until spring though def no hosing! :)

Tont's got quite a few :)

3 lightweights,
3 medium weights and 1 neck,
2 heavyweights,
2 heavyweight combo's,
2 fleeces,
and 2 stable rugs.

A thoroughly spoilt pony.. but he's worth it :D

Nicole :D

After many bad buys over the years, I have found that these are my mare's rugs that I actually use and have lasted well

1x rhino LW
1x bucas smartex rain
1x rambo duo
1x 300g duo liner
1x 100g duo liner

all are well worth the money and will be replaced with the same when they eventually fall apart.

they have a heavy weight full neck rambo supreme each ( the red one) and a medium weight. and about 5 different fleces for various occasions! but generaly live in the turnout, we dont use stable rugs.

God i have loads.....

1 x no filling without neck
1 x 100g l/w without neck
1 x 100g l/w with neck
1 x m/w without neck
1 x m/w with neck
1 x h/w without neck
1 x h/w with neck
1 x h/w spare with detachable neck

My pony is spoilt!!! eeeek :D

And that's just his turnout rugs, he has the same basically in stable rugs, plus fleece and cooler rug

i personally cannot see the point of a "heavyweight"

i use LW..then with a fleece if needed, then a MW...with a fleece if needed.

HW are just not flexible for my liking.

Well my boys have a LW, a MW and two HW rugs each. I use all of them and although I could probably manage without the extra HW, it would make life much harder so I'm glad I have it. I would love another MW for both of them. I think it's perfectly reasonable :D

4 Turnouts each going from rainsheet to full neck rainsheet to 200g standard to 200g full neck combos. And they do wear them all at varying times so none are wasted or hoarded. Used to hoard a lot but anything grown out of or unused for a season goes on Ebay now. They don't have more than one of the same weight or style, i tend to use Premier liners or Amigo stable rugs underneath if extras are needed.

Actually do need another 1200d 200g no neck as the boys have them but the mare doesn't as one of the boys is a serial rug killer, not his but everyone elses which is a right pain in the proverbials.

they have

1x LW no filling each

1x MW 180g filling each, one is a standard neck and the other has a half neck

1x HW think they are 300g each

They are on full turn out and these do get used throughout the year.

They then share a stable rug and a fleece lol Love the fact that my girls are the same size.

and I have a LW missing a chunk and a ancient canvas as emergencies!!!

My boys got 2 lightweights (no fill) although I only ever use one of them as the other ones pants, 1 100g fill turnout with neck attached, and 1 mediumweight turnout with detachable neck.
Would prefer a no neck 100g turnout though, but my purse protests!
