......would you jump a 5year old-just wondering as I do about 3times a week but have worried it may be too much-although he does love it? any suggestions?

I havea 5yo and had him since a 4yo... When he was rubbish and I was only jumping him cross poles and like 2ft uprights I jumped him twice a week but never more. When he improved and we were jumping a bit bigger I was jumping about once a week. Now he's jumping fab as a 5yo I jump him once every 2 weeks and really big only once a month xxxxxxxxxxxxx

IMO 3 times a week is a little steep for a 5yo... or any horse really... But that's just my opinion and every horse is different. Some horses need it to get their attention.. maybe you could try pole work instead of jumping :D :D xxxxxxxxxxxx

yeh good idea i will try some pole work-he just seems to switch off when we do flat work and ive tried lots of different exersizes with him so its not because he is just going round in circles-he only seems to wake up when we jump :o x

What about hacking??? :) Or lunging? Or Loose-Schooling?

I only ride my horse like 3 or 4 times a week so I wouldn't be able to jump a lot unless I jumped him every time I rode him.... Is his flatwork good??? I didn't jump for 2 months just to work on flat and it's really paid off :D

Why don't you take him on a pleasure ride or something? xxxxxxx

we do go on hacks aswell-although its mainly road work :( nope his flatwork isnt good tbh and it does need work-he's just so uninterested and turned off by it -even with instructer,i think thats probly why we end up jumping alot because theres been a few times where ive started off doing flat and ended up jumping just because everything was such an effort!that sounds terrible and I am definatly going to work on it and hopefully it will pay off.Im going to jump 1-2 times a week and hack and flatwork for the rest :D

Once a week for my six year old DWB, and some weeks not at all. About to up it as she's going to do some BS with a professional showjumper, but it will be built up steadily. She's pretty fit now, but needs to get jumping fit.

If your horse gets bored schooling, as J says, pole work (lots you can do with poles), and cones and different surfaces. Also try putting some music on, some horses seem to enjoy it and work better (some don't though!).
