How many times do you clip through the winter?

Hi all,

How many times do you clip your horse through the winter and how long do you leave between clips? I clipped Lottie (Blanket clip) on the 13th Oct and now it is starting to grow out quite quickly. I was planning to clip her around Xmas time but now think I will have to do it sooner. She is well rugged up (heavy weight/450g) and living out atm.

We only do ours once- Aparently is you clip after november it trashed the coat for the next year , so i'm told. We have never had the need to clip more than once, we leave it as late a possable to clip, then they are fine. Ours are welsh B's, blanket clipped, beings worked hard every odd day and competing in monthly ODE's.

i always thought it was if u clipped after january then the coat is runied for the summer?
my horse was fully clipped about the same time as yours kitty93 and i am doing him again this wkend as his coat has grown back

each horse get at least 3 clips possibly 4 if working harder in Feb to get fit for eventing season...

I was under the same impression as you bramble that clipping after January would ruin their summer coat.

I clip after January and it doesn't ruin my girls' coat, though she is a hairy pony!

Her winter coat stops growing after about mid January apart from a few cat hairs so I chop them off as and when

seren will be done 2-3 times depending on her coat growth

my horse was clipped for the first time this winter today. We will proberbly clip her once more.. dont see the need for much more as she is a shorthaired TB anyway.

quite agree i have clipped mine 4 times already and it will be the fifth time on saturday

normally i would clip 3 times a year MAX!! its mad this year!

I always believed it was if you clipped after February that you risked ruining the summer coat!!

I usually clip, mid October, mid December and mid February and she always has a beautiful summer coat - ooh just thinking of a summer coat is lovely

2 or 3 times with the last as late mid March just before they start shedding. Never had a problem with their coats either to be honest and we show them fine.

normally once or twice if first clip is early. fleur was done about a month ago and i suspect will need a second clip in about a month, dan not done yet but he will get a trace and that will do him till next year

Clipping at any time of the year doesn't seem to make much difference to my mare's coat as I have been known to clip her in the summer.

I'm already on my third clip this one had better last, the novelty is certainly wearing off! To be fair I think I did the first one too early as her coat was still really coming through but it turned mild and she was sweating up terribly.

Whenever they need it. Im about to re-do a clip today on one of mine and he's already been done twice. I'll clip them all the way into February or even March. But then I've been known to clip one of my particularily hot horses all year round.
