Now don is broken to drive, he is coming home on Sunday, how often should I drive him? Should it be an every day thing, or should I be free schooling some days as well?
I would drive him everyday you can at first .
But on a ongoing basis I would do some non driven stuff as well for variety and to give his pulling muscles a break .
I don't know if you have a riding horse but if you do all my driving horses have loved being lead from another horse.
I'm certainly not an expert on driving, but I would mix things up a bit. Some days driving, some days schooling. Variety is the spice of life (for horses too!).
I don't know about driving, per se, but I'd be inclined to do what I'd usually do with a just backed mature pony - work him every day / nearly every day doing short driving sessions, for a few weeks before easing off and varying it a bit. Maybe intersperse a few long reining sessions to keep what you're asking of him reasonably consistent?
Hi I have a ride and drive welsh d, I am no expert but would say it depends on how fit he is. If he's only just been broken to drive then start off little and often, so he builds up the right muscles and gets confidence - avoid big hills and long inclines until he's really fit. It is a great way of keeping them fit, mine prefers to drive then being ridden. Enjoy!
