A colleague came into work this morning saying she bought a cocker spaniel puppy yesterday afternoon. She brought in the paper work to show me. My heart sank when I saw the words licenced breeders on the headed notepaper. No details on the puppy itself, no pedigree or registration documents ( these are yo arrived in 7 days!). No diet sheet no puppy information except a booklet provided by a major food company. The puppy aged 10 weeks has been checked, vaccinated and chipped by the kennels vet. No worming details. My colleague was told health checks on parents were good but again no documentation. She did not see the mother and was offered puppies from 3 litters!! Oh and she paid by credit card.
I have not hold her this place is a well known puppy farm. Their website advertises many pedigree breeds and crossbreeds.
When will intelligent people stop bring taken in by these "breeders"
 
There are many people who think that getting a pup with vaccs, a microchip and a vet check is a GREAT bonus.
She was told the health checks were good, the people were probably lovely and friendly and smiley - who wants to buy pups from a knarly old grump. So they MUST have been telling the truth.
Puppies from three litters? But hey, they're dog breeders, that's what dog breeders do, right? And they LOVE their dogs so much, they want to breed from them. All the time. And credit card, super! SO handy.

I wouldn't touch a place like this with a barge pole, but if you think about it objectively - if you're Joe Public and it's your first dog, what's not to like?

And the puppies were probably so cute, and that's the best reason to buy a pup, right?!
 
Its so frustrating isn't it! Most of my friends are dog folk but every so often one who isn't mentions that they have a new pup and its either a designer cross or from someone with "mum and dad" who have had no health tests . :(
 
It gives me the rage. I do the 'puppy parties' at work for newly vaccinated pups but by then really it's too late, we could do with a pre-puppy party to educate people on what they should be looking for when buying the pup in the first place.
 
Sadly these breeders are also often KC approved. When looking at papillons, we had one man (KC approved) offering us puppies from 3 litters planned in about 3 months, who also bred Huskies and Chihuahua's. He wanted them gone at 8 weeks, the breed club specifies 12 weeks or later and got shirty when we said we were not interested. Yet there will be many who have given him money :(

What gets me is when people proudly announce that they have bought a pedigree cockerpoo/cavapoo/labradoodle. NO. You have bought a mongrel at a ridiculous price, helping to fund puppy farming. And the worst thing is they have no idea. A stupid name does not a breed maketh!

Yes these are first time dog owners. You would think with me telling them all about seeing my pup at 1, 3,6 and 8 weeks, showing pictures of mum with babies and me talking about health tests etc they might have got the message.....no!
I just hope there are no problems with this pup. I have told them to socialize, socialize, socalize to which I got the reply do we need to go top puppy training? Why do I need to carry him round the high street? Do I need to buy a sounds tape wont just switching on the vaccum be enough?
Give me strength
 
Microchipping and vaccinations can all be done by the breeder nowadays or not which is often the case with puppy farms. People are so blind they cannot see.

Makes me so annoyed. I judged at a fun dog show yesterday as a favour to a friend, and the amount of whatjamacalitpoos there with the owners almost insisting that their darling Barneypoos is from a recognised breeder charging huge amounts, and providing a printed out 'pedigree', was horrendous.
Their darling Barneypoos might well be a lovely dog, but they could give a rescue a good home, without paying large sums, and funding the very smiley, happy, friendly puppy farmers.

Ha ha, I too do this, sometimes in front of them too, particularly if they are even more obscure than the cockerpoo/ labradoodle etc. sometimes just because I can't spell it, I mean Cavachon?? Really??

Ha Ha, I put large/medium/small crossbreed, I put it in the vaccinations cards too, the breeders we have on our books don't ask me to fill out vacc cards for them anymore as people don't want to buy a 'large/small/medium crossbreed they want the designer name
 
I ask what was the mother & put down that breed cross. If they don't know or say they didn't see Mum I write crossbreed or mongrel.

perhaps they don't want to give a rescue a home perhaps they prefer to know what happened to it since it was a puppy .
I agree the whole poodle cross thing is out of hand and hilarious ( their not mongrels they are designated crosses I was told very firmly ).
 
Ive noticed people take umbrage when you point out that their little darling isnt a pedigree, the fact they have paid a lot of money for it too dosnt go down well. When I point out we paid £550 for our rare vulnerable pedigree breed who was health and DNA tested with full back up from the breeder they do go a bit sheepish and I think they do realise they have been done over in every sense of the word but it would kill them to admit it. The worse thing is most of these are from puppy farms(my pet hate) and animal welfare dosnt figure in producing these dogs.
 
I'm starting to refuse these types for boarding and grooming. IME they tend to have unreasonable owners who want everything for nothing, don't want to brush but want hairy dogs and expect me to be on call for them 24/7.
I'm doing a free microchip event in the village next month ( Chips courtesy of the Dogs Trust). I will be checking if they want them listed as mongrel or crossbreed before implanting the chip. If they are not happy they can go elewhere.

They are mainly from puppy farms but always from money orientated breeders. What gets me is how, invariably, they have chosen that cross because they don't like the parent breeds.
