Like many on this forum I have too many horses and spend far too much on them. And why - just so I can continuously look like a tired muddy injured walking haystack, fall asleep if ever I am out after 10pm and rarely go to the hairdresser/dentist/beautician!! At least I make my non-horsey well groomed friends feel good. So I am deffo in the 'spend more than you should on the horses' clique.
I have tooooooooooooooo..........many and just made a decision to downsize!!! just dropped my young horse off to a young rider (I hope it works out - he's lovely but can be naughty) - got another Scholmaster to go out on loan, so that will leave me one to ride and a yearling in the field.
I feel really sad but it is the right decision, with work commitments I have no time to ride all three and it is not fair seeing hem out in he field being bored.
Dare not add up how much I have been spending each month.......scary!!!

You worded that perfectly, that is exactly the same for me!
I swear i work just for my horses, they just eat my money up!
I have one.He is unshod and turned away till next March/April.
Livery £100 a month,£20 trim every 6 weeks, feed prob about £12 when I start feeding when it gets colder. OH got made redundant in the summer (since got a job) and it has made we aware on how much money I fritter away on the little extras. Horse treats, another pair of boots etc.
So once the essentials are paid for that's it.
I spend about £500 -£600 per month on just one horse. He's on 5* full livery but he was on DIY before and I added it up and realised I spend about the same after getting hay, feed etc. That amount does include about £100 of "presents" per month for him - boots, supplements, new bridle etc etc as I can't help but buy them. I haven't bought myself anything new for as long as I can remember - my tainers have a hole in them, I haven't had a hair cut in almost a year and my clothes are ancient but I'm happy and so is my horse!
I looked a myself the other day and wondered "do I look like a horse owner!?" I can't remember the last time I had a hair cut or spent sometime on myself. I am just not bothered! Thanks to my OH - I get treats....I suppose I am like his horse! heehee
Sammi is a stable livery, and I pay £25 per week and get my hay and straw included.
Rox is a grass livery, and I pay £16 per week, and in winter he has access to a hay feeder 24/7!
Then the usual expenses wormers, farrier, vets etc... Must say, our Farmer use to have cattle herds, so we have amazing grazing, which makes all the difference feed bill wise! xx
we have 4 horse they dont cost us much at all 2 live on fresh air,2 shod 2 unshod we do their teeth so free !!! its only my big old lad that costs the most because of his supps and even thats not alot in the grand scheme of things
OMG don't even go there! lol
I own 3, two girls and a boy, my babies! I don't go out anymore, hairdresser, whats that? Wouldn't have it any other way though!
x
I am sooooo glad you did write it all out - this post was to help me justify my spending....and it is working a treat haha! At least we are not the only ones by the sounds of other comments added to this post!
i have 3 and am also not prepared to add up how much i spend.i only have limited grazing so have them in at night and feed hay all year.add on buying 3rd car to pull trailer, lessons entry fees and the basics i would faint. ignorance is bliss.
I have one and I rent a field from a farmer that just costs me £600 per year. He is easy to keep as lives off hay most of the year...so I waste most of the field I rent as he is always on restricted grazing. Normally he lives out 24/7 and has a field stable to wander in and out of so bedding is minimal and he just has a token feed of hi fi lite with some supplements.
Just lately I have spent a lot more as he has been on box rest with laminitis so has needed more hi fi as it was all he would eat...the vets bill is amounting well too!
So he is quite cheap to keep really as I do not buy extras at all...I have one saddle, one pair of boots, one bridle etc and they are all used until they need replacing because they break. He has the rugs he needs and these are ones that are used every year from when I first got him and I buy no extra ones because he looks after them well so they never get damaged.
I have 3 horses ....Im skint...ALWAYS!!! I am officially house bound now I cant afford anything but horse feed, bedding etc and now I just bought my third horse...he needs a new saddle!
But hey they make me happy and their happy so were all happy
I have two and a do spend too much on them, my social life isn't too great apart form horsey friends, havent been to the hairdressers for a while, etc. but wouldn't have it any other way
I am loving this post - I just totted up how much we spent (me and daughter) on riding and riding 'stuff' last month, bering in mind we don't own any, just pay field rent and half shoes for No1 LGW, lessons on LGW once a week with private RI and lessons once a week at local RS plus annual membership of local RS (to get cheaper lessons is worth it), plus a jump clinic for daughter at another RS, plus at a 3rd RS (we are RS tarts, ride at most of them locally
) 4 x 1 hour hacks for me and being half term we both went on a 3 hour picnic ride there too. That's aside from competiton enty fees (only 1 outing this month, plus diesel in tow car), some pony treat snacks, and a few bits and bobs at the tack shop like new reins for No 1 LGW.
All in it's just as much if not more than you lot keeping a couple of horses on DIY livery.
When eventually we buy a bigger pony it'll be kept at home, so I don't think it'll be as expensive!
When i had one in livery i did add it all up, including running the horsebox, tax, insurance, recovery, comp fees, training, livery, feed, farrier etc. it came to around £10k a year, so over £800 a month. It is scary when you actually keep a note of absolutley everything that you spend & add it up faithfully. there was neevr a month that was less than £600.
But i don't smoke, don't drink a lot, don't have fancy holidays or new cars. this is what gives me a reason to get up everyday & do my job & it has been worth every penny
I have 3 and i spend about £210 a week on them - this includes shoeing, and 2 lessons a week, and all their feed, bedding, hay and livery.
Its the shoeing that keeps catching me out as one is shod at 5 weeks, one is on 6 and the last one is on 7.
Add to that is vets bills - just had one today for £200 and back treatments - all 3 due again in December...and i need a dressage saddle for my latest addition....
oh and i have not even added in entry fees (or running the horse box!) ohh better get a part time job....
yep always skint, always tired, but when those big brown eyes watch your every move, and when you hear the whinny it is PRICELESS
