How may horses do you have? do you spend allot of cash on them?

I have one and a half ponies. The little one is only 12hh and is a companion but, as she is led out on execise with my boy (14.2hh) she is shod.

I do keep them at home but with feed innoculations dentist, shoes etc etc I dread to think how much they cost.

Crikey - I hate to think!
Ok here goes:

Per month -
£30 rent for stable and field
£39 insurance
£56 haylage
£29 bedding
£40 shoes
£35 feed

equals about £230 a month - actually that doesn't seem so bad but that's before the 'little' extras like rugs, boots etc!
I don't go to the hairdressers more than twice a year though and I buy my clothes from ebay and tesco/asda's sale. I don't go abroad for holidays and I drive a battered old car.
But I wouldn't want it any other way!

I have 3 but 1 is living at my parents, so although I pay his insurance (£30 a month) I dont pay anything else for him.

For the other 2 I pay £10 a week each on rent (have our own mini yard)so typically £80 - £100 a month, £100 on feet every 5 weeks, feed is normally about £45 a month. Bedding and hay on top of that but they are both out 24/7 for as much as possible so no average figure really.

Wormer is quarterly so about £20 - £30 for that....but all in all quite cheap really compared to what others are posting!!!

Ugh forgot about the insurance, well I paid for 1 upfront for the year which was about £250 and the other one is £40 a month...still works out that I spend over £1000 a year on bloody horse insurance!!

I'v never dared do this but here goes!!:

For 2 horses

DIY livery - £350
Farrier - £85
Feed and Supps - £110
Straw - £21
Paper bedding - £36
Hay - £39
Haylage - £36
Insurance - £96
This totals - £773

I have a Mctimoney practitioner once every 3 months at £80 for both, then the dentist, wormers etc! Oh and the monthly lessons at £30 a pop! Blimey!! Plus I have a major rug addiction and tend to buy them loads of presents!

Oh my god!!! No wonder I always look like a tramp! The horses look and must feel better than I do!!

Can't hear you! Tralalallalalalalalalalal

Got three neds on DIY.

Don't know and not adding it up

I keep my three really cheaply!

£10 a week livery each = £30
2 x round bales of haylage a month = £30 (none have hard feed)

Mineral lick every 4 weeks = £10

Insurance £60 monthly

Free bedding I shred my own paper

Have 6 monthly worm counts done but haven't had to worm for three years as rest and rotate 6 acres of grazing with sheep and cattle and poo pick once a day. Also there is no new horses coming onto the grazing and all my horses were wormed and stabled before going onto pasture!

Very rarely have their feet trimmed as they are all barefoot and naturally wear their feet I just tidy the chips myself.

Tetanus vaccine every two years no flu because i don't compete and they don't meet new horses!

All my equipment is bought second hand or from boot sales or for birthdays etc.

So not as bad as i thought with everything about £250 a month for three ponies!

I've manage to really reduce my costs recently due to
a) finding somewhere to keep my horse for free with a friend and
b) going barefoot

Hay costs me £4 p/week at the moment, shavings is about £6 p/week. Pony is fed a balancer which costs about £26 p/bag but he only gets through a bag every 6 weeks. A trim is £10 every 3 months.

I think if I said he cost me £50 p/month I would be being generous

I am very lucky

But i don't smoke, don't drink a lot, don't have fancy holidays or new cars. this is what gives me a reason to get up everyday & do my job & it has been worth every penny

I have three and outgoings are:

Field rent £40 a month
Farrier £60 a month
Worming £10 a month
Feed £40 a month

Hmmmm, think thats it at them moment. All are unshod, only one is rugged and fed hard feed and we haven't started feeding hay yet.

I only buy tack if they need it although I am guilty of buying the odd headcollar that I don't need if I see something I like.

So, £150 for three isn't too bad at all I don't think

For 4 horses per month, off the top of my head:

Livery £0 (home)
insurance £160 (including trailer)
Farrier £230 every 6 weeks
Hay £80
Bedding/feed/supplements £120
All the added tack/rugs/bits and bobs/ land management £150 minimum
Dentist £0!
Vets average £50
...........i think i am going to stop thinking about it now before I throw a coronary!!!! = £760

i have 7 and i feel very lucky compared!!! i rent 4 acres that cost me £250 every 6 months, all 5 broodmares are out and my yearling colt. my stallion is in, that costs £18 a week includes as much haylage as he can eat and bedding, my mares have two big bales a week which he does for £30 total £233.66 a month, then vet bills on top, but not really included.

I am very lucky as my best friend full liveries both my horse and my daughters pony very cheaply on her yard......i pay her 160 a month for both of them ( at the weekend and during the school hols when i am not working i often do the whole yard for her, always offer to get up and do all the turing out for all 12 horses at the weekend, make sure i muck out a few extra stables and stuff so she knows i really appreciate it!!). we pay 76.00 for a set of front shoes for my horse plus hind trim and a full trim for pony, every 6 weeks ish, i pay 10.00 a week for hay and straw for both and about 20.00 a month for feed, and obviously wormer depends which one it is but i pay for that too.
i am lucky as i wouldnt be able to manage paying for 2 if it wasnt for her. i try not to spend too much on goodies for them but sometimes can't resist. i have not had a hair cut since December 2007!!! and spend more on clothes for my daughter and not much at all on clothes for me except work clothes. it's all worth it though!

Hmmm...

Averaged out per month, approximately:

Grass livery inc. hay/haylage and poo picking: £65
Trim: £35
Insurance: £30
Lessons: £100
Wormer/teeth: £10
Entries and random extras (precipitated by tack-shop visits
blush.gif
): £60+

Total: £300+, only £140 of which is going on the actual maintenance of the pony. If I were to add another horse, say, next year, I'd budget a total of about £500/month for both of them, including lessons and entries.

This has been quite a useful exercise!

I have one horse and one pony. We make our own hay so this costs me nothing (although it does cost OH's business!) and we exchange hay for grazing so most of the time no money changes hands, just hay, which again, costs to OH's business!

So, they cost very little, which is just aswell as I would not be able to keep them otherwise!

I have one and one arriving at the weekend. Current one costs £50 a month livery, plus £15 for feet every few months (yes, really! farrier came last time and said "nothing to trim!") cost of wormer and, um that's about it.
second will cost me in insurance, feet and wormer, oh and hay in the winter. about £100 a month for two, though I'm allowing £150 in case hay goes up or for emergencies.

OP I spend more than that and am on DIY! Are you sure you have done the math correctly there?

I have 2 - a welsh cob and a convalescent warmblood.

When Lanky is inevitably pts (I say inevitable, but I thought he'd inevitably live beyond the age of 8, so I guess nothing is...) I won't be getting another. I will just keep George. I will still have to pay the same livery in order to keep renting the same place to myself, but will save a lot on everything else as he is the more expensive of the 2 to feed, bed down etc. Just the way it is.

I am having a baby in April so won't need a second horse (although both OH and I are horsey) as one of us will have to ride a bike with a child-carrier until small one is old enough for a pony!

Like others here, I don't smoke or drink - neither of us have drunk since before the pregnancy and even before that we were limited. We rarely go out and I don't get my hair done very often. Neither of us dress that dapper. If I didn't have a horse, I could probably shop in Jane Norman rather than Primark! (oh, but I'd have to lose weight, too!).
