How much are vet expences for a broodmare having a foal?

I took out the studs vet package as I hadn't bred from my mare before (had had a foal with a previous owner). The cost was £265 which covered all scans required and any vet care related to getting her in foal. As it happened my mare was only covered the once and was in foal first time so I would have saved money if I'd have paid for the scanning only. My mare foaled outside in May and I checked the afterbirth which was complete. Both mare and foal were fit and healthy after foaling so no vet visit was needed at that point. Hope that helps.

Well it cost me about £1000 in total for all vets fees, visits, swabs, EVA test, boarding and scans from start to foal arriving. My mare got pregnant on first cycle but required hormone treatment to regulate her cycles and help her ovulate.

This was for AI.

If i remember rightly i think each scan was about £25 plus call out. After she foaled i had the vet to give foal tetanus jab check over afterbirth and examine mare and foal this was about £70 all in.

Yes had the cem swab done! Cant remember how much that was, not much i dont think.

Keep fees too which was about £28 per week, she was there for about 5 wks.

I think my whole bill including stud fee everything was £700.00 max.

Dolly went away to stud. The vet package was £190 plus vat, which included all pre-ai scans, drugs and caslick. It also included twin pinching (which we needed) and scans up to 40 days. I also had stud keep fees on top which were very reasonable.

my kwpn mare will have cost me approx so far (no foal on ground yet!): £1136

trying in 2008 -
swabs 45 stud fee 350 scan 68 pg jab 12
wash out 45 scan 68 transport 85 livery 210

cost for trying again in 2009
swabs 45 transport (finally was able to use my own box!) livery 90 extra stud fee (switched to a stallion who was proven fertile) 50 scan 68

when she was at stud the 1st year of trying she came back with a snotty nose both times, these needed antibiotics etc for so that was about 35 extra from memory. There is also the fact that i had to keep her empty all winter!

This was for natural service. Prices are approx as i have tried not to keep track of it all otherwise hubby may divorce me! (bought mare as a broodmare feb 2008 - and her 1st foal with me isnt due until May 2010.... hence thats a long time of me keeping her waiting for a foal from her!)

ETA - looking back at those prices, some of the vets fees dont include the call out - which is £26 per visit, they also sedated her for her very 1st scan - cant recall at all how much they charged me for that!

My 08 filly upon birth cost me approx £100 or just below? This was for a call out, for the vet to check over the mare and foal, check all of the placenta etc was there, and give foali a tetnus booster shot thing (that only last 2 weeks). Everything was fine so that was a simple check with nothing extra needed.

You will also have the cost of the foal being ID'd for its papers/passport and microchipped. My vets charge £26 for doing an ID drawing and about the same again to microchip, plus the £26 call out! So thats another cost to take into account!
The registration fees also vary quite a lot depending on what society you are going with.

thanks guys, have helped me lots

I think it has cost me about £1200 each mare, this was with 1 frozen dose each and they both took first time (I was very lucky) including vets fees and stud fees.
You need to consider the fertility of the stallion but also which is very important is the stud you use.
The stud I used is very good, hence 2 mares in foal first time with frozen!

Just to add it the stallion was over £600 per frozen dose and vets fees for frozen is more expensive than chilled and would be less for natural. This also included stud fees.

Also something to take into consideration is natural and chilled most places give some sort of return if the mare is not in foal on1st October where as frozen does not.
