I've just ordered some hay in (not a lot) its £5.50 a bale!! Made me feel sick but need it.

Just called local pet/feed shop, and they are normally expensive, but bales are £5.80 so going to go and get one so I've got some for tonight.

What are other people paying, I'm hopefully going to have storage for a big round bale when I move.

normal sized small bales?

we paid £1 two weeks ago....which admittedly is cheap but £2.50 max I have seen.

We have got a serious bargain by the looks of it! £2.50 per bale some bales are a bit hit and miss but good enough to feed without soaking most of the time.. Small haylage is about £5 per bale and large £25.00. Can't get any large hay at all.

I think there is a hay shortage in some areas so that means people start charging the earth. Anything between £2.50 & £4 normally. It would have to be bluddy good hay to charge £5.80. That is almost as much as very good quality haylage. Robbing G***S!!

I'm in Sussex and have found some brilliant meadow hay for £4.50 a bale, normally though when theres no shortage it's £3.50.

I phoned somewhere last week and he said he was charging £6.50 a bale-I wouldn't pay that unless there really was none left!- if that is not making money out of a situation then I don't know what is!- but I suppose it's to do with supply and demand!

My haylage supplier has run out now 'til July so will be using small bales until this years is ready.

I reckon there is going to be a really terrible shortage of hay/haylage nationwide very soon and silly prices being asked for it.... due to the snow and bad winter we had, and also a bad spring too.

£3.75 for a small bale - v good quality though - amongst some real **** out there because it was such a bad season for hay (my horse would not eat some of it - she'll eat ANYTHING!)

The last lot I bought was large bale haylage and it was £30. The farmer had had to go up country for it though which made it more expensive. I've now run out and there's not a blade to be had round here :( I've had to resort to buying some small bale haylage just so I've got something to put in a haynet while they're being groomed and that £6.15 for Devon haylage and £6.50 for Marksway

Having some delivered on Sat at £3 small bale, but it's the last lot he's got and I have no idea where on earth I am gonna find some more - nightmare!

:( :( I feel like crying.

I thought I'd got a good price as its so difficult to get hay round here.

I could look into getting haylage instead, since I'm paying haylage prices.

I want cheaper hay!! :(

£6.50 per small bale - £45 per large square bale!! But to be honest I think that supply has gone dry and I'm not aware of anywhere else that I could get any! On to £4.95 for bale(20kg) of silvermoore ecomony haylage now!! This had better be a bumper grass growing season but it's not looking hopeful so far here!

Thankfully I bought our last bale a couple of weeks ago! Was paying £25 for large round bale but last two bales were £30 as usual supplier only had haylage left. Decent small bales are £3 round here.

I am paying £2 for a small bale just found 2 new suppliers with realy good stuff,£15 for large round and£15 for large round haylage. all realy good quality.Looks like im getting a bargain

Normally paying £38 for a big bale of haylage (price includes delivery from 2 hours away) but it is superior quality (for that price I imagine it's spun from gold!) and we can't get haylage locally at any time of the year.

BUT, supplier has had to ship in extra haylage to see regular customers through so it's now coming from much further away. So, am now paying £58 a bale - but the bales are gigantic and much bigger than the usual big bales.

Roll on this season's crop though so we can go back to slightly more normal prices!

What hay? We have none around here at all. A friend of mine is currently paying £60 for large round bales of hay for her riding school ponies.
Absolutely crazy. I am now on a yard where it is included but back in January I was paying £25. Hows that for inflation?!

I buy my hay from a smallholder who I've been using for years. I order & pay for my years supply of hay in June each year, around 270 bales, & they store it in a big brick building for me. I go & collect around 40 bales at a time when I need it. As a result I have sufficient hay to see me through to this years cut. I think I paid either £2.25 or £2.50 per bale & it's proper meadow hay from old meadows that have been there years. I even find wild flowers in it. :)

I had to buy hay in the height of the snows and paid £3.75 a bale for pretty small small bales. But they were lovely sweet stalky stuff, great for horses tho the sheep looked chuffed with their luck too! And that was delivered, very important when you cant get in or out, they managed to get in in a gap between two periods of very heavy snow so deserved every penny!

Will probably need more soon, hope they still have some left. On the other hand the haylage load was 30%+ mouldy even tho no holes. Being a wuss I never complain and send stuff back so put that down to experience but wont get more.

£35 for a large round bale - it's an american baler so a bit bigger than normal - had been getting it for £30 then that farmer ran out so got another supplier. We had really nice haylage for £25 a bale over the winter but that has also run out -last 2 bales were horrible.

It's almost at the stage thought that I'll pay anything as long as I can get some - we've had to source from about 3 or 4 different farmers recently as they all kept running out. I'm praying for a good summer because if not i dread to think what this winter will be like!

See I was paying £3.75 but that supplier has run out, can't get any locally.

Didn't think I'd need to, thought my ponies would be living on air again by now, but that is not the case.

The bales I got for £5.50 are really heavy and it looks nice too.

Should've bought more.

I have been buying some top quality stuff at £4.25 a bale, delivered. Thankfully my insurance is paying ;)
