How Much Are you Paying for Small Bale Hay

Ive just bought some at 3.00 a bale but even though it looks ok to me not dusty or anything they wont eat it. Is it because there is still grass around or is there something wrong with the hay? Its last years hay. Not sure what to do now. Will have to get some from some where else and try that I suppose.
 
£4 a bale (size 10) good quality hay and we pick it up-farmer doesn't deliver

And fuel price here even in cambs varies!!!!!

1.19 petrol
 
£4.25 a small bale of hay at the mo.... up from £3 a bale in the summer :(

Farmer says he's putting it up after Xmas, so I hope to get my whole winters requirements stuffed in every orifice! (Sorry ponies, you're staying out, but you'll get fed!)

Straw £2 a bale and got small bale haylage for £5.50

I am new to the forum (been reading with interest for a while but only got round to registering last night) so firstly hi :D and secondly I hope this post comes out ok as not posted before :eek:

Could you let me know where in Herts you are getting hay at such a good price?

Long story but I am horse hunting at the moment having been without one for a while and I am hearing horror stories of £7 bale in Herts so would be good to know where I could possibly get some cheaper :)

I`m in Hampshire but bought mine at harvest prices from Thorogoods in Essex. Paid £16 for mini jumbales which are the eq. to about 4.5 conventional bales. So worked out about £3.75 a small bale. It is cracking hay (Timothy and soooo clean :-) and I really wish i`d ordered more now!

I`m a relief milker and know lots of farming folk but none of them are keen to let any fodder go this year as Hay, silage & maize crops have all been down massively. Normally I can buy off farm no problem and have done for years :-(

I have a feeling there may be some very hungry animals around this winter and some (even more than usual!) skint owners.
 
In August small bale hay was £6 per bale. Last weekend I went and got some as I had the trailer out - gone up to £6.50 and it was RATIONED!!!!! I said 'How many could he get in the trailer?' and he said 'You can only have 20!'.
I then found out that our usual supplier of large round bale haylage (which I usually use through the winter) has gone up from £32.50 to £45 (and they are only supplying their regulars but it IS delivered). And that others are charging around £50 in the area!! Good job I sold a couple of horses! :(

I'm in the same county as you and I pay £6 from a local farm. Actually I am also having to buy the YOs own hay from the fields down the road for £6 too which I am pretty peeved about since she only has to pay a pittance for the loacl farmer to bale it. I am seriously considering horsehage this year, if I am allowed to buy my own (I doubt I will be able to). :(
 
£6.50 per bale - Am expecting price to increase to £10 by Xmas.

Very, very worried about how much it will cost to get through this winter & particularly concerned we'll get a bad one again with lots of snow like last year... We have one more pony in the family this year too so rather freaked out!!!

We're in West Sussex.

£3.50 delivered and stacked last year £4.20 delivered and stacked today. My supplier said poor harvest this year and has had an influx of people asking him to supply but he just doesnt have the hay to supply as he wants to keep his regulars happy (thank god I am a regular). Its very difficult to get hay round here at the moment so although I wasnt keen on price hike I know we did have a bad harvest and its the first increase in 4 years!
 
£3 bale delivered and stacked same price as last year. Supplier did say he harvested a bit less than an average year, he has supplied us for years and only has a few customers we buy his surpless which he does not need. Cannot believe some of you have to pay £6+, I would have to sell some of mine to pay out that kind of money. Thankgod I have too much land and can just open up more fields with plenty of grass and then just supplement with a bucket feed.
 
The farmer we get ours from is selling it for £4 a bale and you have to collect it yourself or pay delivery, but he delivers ours free at 3 bales for £10 cos we get so much from him :)
