How much below the asking price do you normally offer?!

Ie, say a horse is £1500- what is the acceptable (or normal) offer price?

I swear i read on here somewhere that you should offer 75% of the price but i may be dreaming!!

When I bought Star (many years ago) then I was pleased to pay the asking price but get the tack thrown in

Which I think is how haggling used to work as a rule....

However, when I bought Be, last year, I was able to haggle a hell of a lot off her asking price

and *then* after signing the sale contract was astounded to discover people were offering suitcases of cash without seeing her, purely for her breeding, or double the price I paid based on her Sjing ability!

Depends entirely on the situation.


If I feel they are offering the horse at a very reasonable price as it is, and feel I am getting my monies worth horse wise, I would just try to haggle to perhaps get some tack thrown in. However, I would be happy to pay the price and get the horse off the market.

If the situation is where I feel the horse is over priced I will talk this through with the owners. I will say where I am coming from and how I see their horse and whether they would be willing to make a deal. If they are willing to barter, I won't disrespect them throwing in a silly offer but I will usually go around 20-25% off and work from there. If they are not willing to barter, the horse is I feel is still overpriced, then I walk away. Simple as.

depends on if the horse is worth it imo , of 5 horses that i have had i have paid asking price for 4 , without even trying for a lwer price as i have felt they were worth the money , i would only offer lower if i had a specific reason why it was not worth full price
 
I paid the asking price for Farra but did ask that her saddle and her bit were included.

Reason - she was about the right price - Clydes mares that have good breeding and are broken to ride go between 3,500 to 5,500 and she was 4,000. Yes she is green, but all the basics are there, she is what we want, and she is registered with the Clydesdale Society should we ever wish to breed.

Though we do not sell our horses, she would easily sell again for this price or more - clydes are rare and other than some youngstock are few and far between to buy.

I also was not inclined to haggle as her reason for being sold was due to the OH having lost his job and call me a softy, but it just didn't feel right.
 
Like the others, I also think it depends on the situation - how much I feel the horse is worth, how much I think it suits my requirements and the current market.

Generally I would look at about 20% off the asking price.

if you offered £800 they'd be mad not to except it TBH...

it doesn't look that special.
 
i agree with jm07 £600/800 top wack
but think youd be better of still looking !!
give it a month and people will drop prices as winter will
be on its way !!!!!!!!
