How much bigger did your youngster get after 2?

Hi all! As some of you may know I’ve got an Irish cob who is 2.5 years old, he’s currently standing at 13.1hh he was just under 13hh when I got him in October, I was told he’ll make 14.2 by the previous owners. String test indicates about that but not sure if I did it correct as he was young he moved around a lot lol. May try again now he’s a lot calmer.
just wondering really what growth you got from your young ones after the age of two? Would be interesting to know. And if you have any pics then even better!

You might make 14hh with good grass and food but I doubt more than that. Being a cob he will go out A LOT when he matures.

I wouldn’t say he is going to grow much bigger since he is 2 haft years old . If you’re lucky he might reach 14 hands.

Was he known to be born mid winter? as at this time of year I would expect most to be just about 2 or 3 not 21/2 years old which would make a difference to how much growing there is, if he just has a generic passport stating DOB as Jan, which is fairly common for those with no known breeding that were chipped and passported to be sold then he is probably actually 3 now and may not have much growing left, well not upwards.

he was a winter baby, he apparently was born In December of 2017. I thought that was late for a foal but the dentist said he has too many baby teeth to be 3 just yet, he said 2 and a half also. Although my instinct says a late late foal would more likely be October Xx

That is unusual but not unheard of, if he was born going into winter he may have had a slower start than one born when the grass is growing so you may well have a late spurt this summer.

aw she is absolutely gorgeous, the strong test says just over 14hh for my boy. Will try again tomorrow I haven’t done it since I got him. Xx

Mine was approximately 13.1hh aged two and at 8 hes now 14.3/15hh

When I got him at age 2 he was very malnourished. He was slow to develop and always a year behind physically compared to others the same age and breed.

mine was very small at 2. I thought he would never gain any height (he was supposed to get to 14.2) he was very weedy.
He is now 5, nearer 15hh and very strong.
He was not malnourished he just never did much in the growing department as a 2 or 3 yo. He has totally made up for it since. I'm afraid you just have to be patient.

I had a December donkey foal so not unknown.

Thanks but would love to see photos of your boy then in a years time we can also compare suspect your height predictions will be right, string test is usually accurate, how big were his parents as that is also a good guide . Xx

We bought a 2yo who was 15.1 on tip toes, and is now 16.3 at six. He is a warmblood though and most of his relatives were around similar heights at maturity.

When I bought my mare at 3 she was 14.3 - by 8 she had grown to 15.3 & now she's 10 & just gone up another rug size - I must put the measuring stick on her again ?

The one I have now grew 2 inches between 2 and 5, although whether she was measured correctly for her sales ad I don't know!
The previous youngster grew over a hand between 2 and 7, but he was a (very) big, slow maturing WB who was evidently a throwback to the big draught breeding, as he made a hand bigger than his parents.

I bought a cob who was measured at fifteen hands and half an inch at four, not two, and he was fifteen three and a half when I sold him at eight.

The two two year olds I have owned put on three inches for one and over four inches for the other between two and five.

A warmblood i bought at four was two inches bigger at ten.

Yours could have a lot of height left to come, but maybe not five inches.

The one who did over four inches, and I don't think he has stopped yet.

One was about 15.1/2 at 2 years and finished about 16.3 at 6 years.

The one I currently own was about 15hh at 2, and now at 4 is about 15.2hh. Dam was 16.2, sire 16.3 - I’m hoping I haven’t been short changed ?

Op my traditional cob very similar to yours is a late baby to make 14.2 and is currently 2.5 years and the same height as yours too. I bought him last July as a yearling and the amount of growing and changing he's done between then and now is unbelievable. Vet estimated 14hh but anything is possible with them being late babies and slow growing cobs!

This is really interesting thank you all, seems he could make the 14.2 then! He’s changed a lot since I’ve had him and he has grown about an inch so it’ll be really interesting to see how he matures.
I wish I did know something about his parents but I have no idea xx

I never measured when she arrived last June. Probably about 14 hands? She’s just turned 3 and think she’s about 15.1.

Really interesting thread! I bought my girl about a month ago she was 2 in April she’s about 14.2 now! She’s id x cob so will be a slow grower I think but would like her to make 15hh+ , mum was 15.1 and dad is 16hh so fingers crossed!

The first horse I bought with my own money I bought a three he was a spit out from a smart stud because he was going to be too small .
He measured 15.1 when I bought him I took a friend with me and he said he’s going to grow buy him he looked immature for a three year old so I bought him from the day he arrived he grew and grew until he finished at 17.1 at six
I then sold him he was too big for me at that time I did well out of him I cleared my credit card and bought another .
It seems if you want them to grow they don’t and vice versa .

I bought my big lad as a malnourished 5yo and 16.00hh and he is now 14yo and 16.3hh. The growth spurt went on between 6 and 8yo. They definitely DO grow after being 2yo, though, as we have a 3yo WB at the yard and he's getting higher by the day!
