When you were horsey shopping what was your budget and how much did you end up spending?

How many horses did you look at?

And of course which one did you come home with?

Ours were all under 3k except on youngster who was just over at 3,5.

my big lad was originally 3500, then went to 2750 my budget was 2k . i paid a lot less. but did get stung for 200 quid to have him delivered!

i never went to view him and he wasnt what i wanted, just the sort of quality i drempt of.

i just bought a little grey i had 0 funds but need to bank some money so put it in to her, she was up for 500 i paid 400. hadnt looked at any others but did go and view her.

my budget was 1k

horse' asking price was 1250 - i didnt haggle!!!!

shes now 5 and got a cracking jump - she used to be scared of going over a pole...

:D

my budget was £1500, i paid £700 (asking price) for my mare, with intentions of selling on, and making a profit. she turned out to be everything i wanted, and more, ive had her 12 years in 3 months time and shes bred me a cracking filly, and will be with me till the end of her days :)

Sad really but I dont remember. I remember where I bought him from, sort of, I could never find it again. I used to remember the guy who owned hims name, but not any more.

Wonder if I still have the receipt, still it was 31 years ago.

However much it was I must have had my moneys worth, whatever it was depreciated over 30 years.

We had no money, and got a 16.3hh TB ex-racer for exactly that amount. He's a super horse, and is much loved and very sweet. Also has a jump to die for, and sweet paces with the potential for a decent test.

Previously, for our budget of nothing we've had a 21 (nearly 22) TB schoolmaster who'd go round 2'9 all day long regardless of what his numpty rider did, a 14.2hh mare who'd ping 1.15m SJ courses like they were nothing at all and a 14hh cob who went round BE Novice courses (only unaff.). Loaning is awesome :D

when i originaly started buying horses to bring on and sell my first horse was a 4 month old colt that cost me £150 i had £180 to spend i had him a few months and sold him for £375 then bought another 3 year old colt for £350 and sold about 6 month later once i broke him for £1500 (these 2 was bought out of ireland by a friend), then i bought £750 thoroughbred straight out of ireland through the auctions as he was realy poor and had been absolutly hammered with work, i threw him in a field for a few months then put him into work...... 12 month later he was jumping upto foxhunter with the potential to go further and was sold for £4500, then took everything from there now i successfully run my own stud and livery yard, taking horses for schooling, breaking and buying and selling horses............ all this came from a £150 colt that was nothing special apart from a typical cob. :D i couldnt ask for a better life :D

was asking 6k but i said 5 with tack and 2 rugs which was about £500 worth and they said yes after a short thought. nothing wrong with her just that she was 14 years old a moody horse. love her to pieces 1.5 years later.

In AUD (Australian Dollars)

ISH (bred my self) $700 AUD service fee, cost of raising until 5 years old $15 000/ Cost of breaking in $5 000.

Minature for kids $600AUD
Australian riding Pony $ 3000 AUD
Welsh/QH Cross $4000 AUD
Solid Appaloosa 23 yrs old $1000 AUD
Freisan Cross/Riding Pony/ASH swapped for debt
Clydie/TB cross $1000 AUD

so the most expensive was the one I bred myself.

I've been extremely lucky and all 3 of my horses have cost me nothing!

Nothing wrong with any of them and knew them all inside and backwards...though obviously have put the time, money and work into them after still to this day on. 3 exceptions to the 'nothing good in this world comes free' rule ;)

I've never gone to see nor try a horse for myself either! All just 'happened' with no planning or intentions of getting one.

I didn't plan on getting any of them either. 1st one was a surprise present and a mare who I'd already backed and done the work with [Cass]. 2nd was off one of my best friends [Bust]. He was a very last minute decision and was a bit of nightmare to start with as the lorry broke and I got stranded down South so was late picking him up etc etc. But finally got back to Norfolk and picked up as we moved all our things down and stopped by to put him up the back of the lorry as we moved lol! And 3rd, Sparks, was a very surprise gift for which I am eternally grateful and excited for!

6yr old tb cost 2500 3 years ago now be eventing and has bsja winnings recently independently valued at 10,000
5 yr old warmblood gelding bought in june for 8500 already winning 1.10 bsja and placed twice be 100 (when hubby isnt falling off him , he has a huge jump!!)

The most I paid was for H who was £2k a good few years ago now, but that was me buying a friend out so he came with way over £2k worth of equipment.

The cheapest was free.

I've just done a quick calculation of the average purchase price for our lot and it comes out at £763.

I tend to not go out looking for horses, they just land on my lap when it's least convenient. We're not buying any more for a long time tough.

I had no budget for the boy and wasn't looking. Asking price was £2.5k, paid £2.3k. I just sort of came accross him ... :-)
Budget for her was £4k, paid £2.5k (asking price). She is a cracker. We agreed there and then, never went to look at the others...

My current boi cost my husband AUD 3k :D

My old horse was a giveaway due to a riding school closing, he was a rescue horse. Took us a while to iron out the kinks but he was the best horse I will ever own.

Friends of mine play polocrosse and buy new horses every year. This year they bought one for AUD 12k, last year they bought 2 - AUD 9k and 6k, and AUD 4k, the year before that they bought 3 - AUD 3k, 4k, 2.5k. They are constantly looking for the 'right' horses. I often think to myself they are looking in the wrong places.

My husband and I are constantly asking one another how on earth they can afford to do that. Yes, they sell but they generally buy new ones before selling on the no longer requireds.

dont know what Meesha cost as OH bought her for me as a suprise (went permanently lame within a year and is now field ornament) Dex was bought for £1200 as an unbacked 3 year old - had no experience on youngsters but best thing I ever did - hacks on own/in company, jumps and hunts.

i had zero budget but couldn't help but look, i paid £850 for my big lad, we borrowed some money off family to pay for him and to collect him.
we paid £75 for each of my ponies, they were between 6 months and 18 months when i got them from a bloke who just bought them off the moors.
my 3rd pony i got on loan and a few months later she was gifted to me by her owner. we still keep in touch.

I was looking for a nice grey gelding, safe hack for £3000ish 3 years ago and ended up buying a 7ye old, burnt out BSJA SFx slightly nutty, dark bay mare!

Bought from a local dealer, so no tack, no rugs, no headcollar! Delivery as free though:D All for the princely sum of £2000.

I always say I paid to much and the dealer remarks on the horse I bought to cheaply. She's a stunner now!!:D

I was given my first pony ( I was nearly 40 ), a Sec D............say not more lol. Had him for 5 years before I could no longer cope with his "ways"!!

£650 for Turbo from a riding school, that was 10 years ago; Never been lame, never had the vet out in all that time :) absolute sweetie.

Ben was £1800 ( my budget was £1500 ) and he was 18 years old, but he has re paid me a thousand times over in three years :D he's the safest thing on four legs!

Would never part with either of them

Ned was £600, as I remember (I didn't buy him) and his owner told me she looked at a few, but felt so sorry for the poor, scruffy, sorry looking thing.

Glad she did! I've heard rumours he was off to the meat man! Whatever would I have done without Nutty Ned?!

Bought our Warmblood for 2750 three years ago 500 less than he was up for.He has Dutch Courage bloodlines and a wonderful temperement, but does dish on his nearside fore. There was not much history other than previous owner did not gel with him.I bought him for my tall 14 year old daughter after trying out so many unsuitable horses. He has been a great buy and excells at SJ.Love him to bits, dish and all.Later his breeder traced him to us after desperately trying to locate him.The girl she sold him to threatened to have him shot.I then found out that the breeder who is an acquaintance of John Whitaker, sent him to his yard for one month training,so good to know the good and the great have sat on him. Also found his dam family line are traced to Whitaker horses.

The first horse I bought - 18yr old arabxTB 14.2hh, I put in an offer of £650 and owners agreed.
Second one, - 14.2hh Highland unreg. and not backed - I wasn't looking for and ended up with on loan, then tiem came to hand her back or buy her so agreed on £800 which is what she was worth when I took her on loan.
Third one - new forest, unhandled 3yr old - I was looking for a cheap companion up to £400 and got her delivered £250.

No tack or anything came with any of the horses but I tended to have bits and pieces lying about so bought things as and when I could. Young companion does not yet have a saddle as she is going to be a ridden pony.

i got my boy for £450, he was on loan to me to start then i brought him.. he was the only pony i looked at.. he a 12.3hh welshie x off bodmin moors.. he was a meat man rescue before i had him...

My lad cost me 1.1k, purebred 14.3hh arab, sold as a project, this was 4 years ago now, my budget was 1k but he was worth the extra, he's not so much of a project more of a highly intelligent & stubborn creature ;o)

Prices don't mean a lot unless you state when they were bought!

My first horse: £150 in 1972. Budget was £100 but persuaded my parents to increase it.

Second one: £900 in 2011 (my budget was under £1000).

Meeka was £8750, Max was £7,500, Pico was £4k and Alfie was £2k ( which was a bargain!).
I also have bought Bert who was £500 from the sales and Bronson who was £1!
I bought a mare for £1250 and sold her unseen to some one for £7,500 a year later.
To be honest- the cheaper ones have been the easiest!

From when I can remember...
12.2 jump pony £300 ( he kept bucking everyone off and dragging them! :D) I had him till the end in march 2009 :(
14.2 £1250 little winning machine but couldn't canter when I got him .. Still have him but he's out on loan!
15.2 TB gelding bought for £1500 and sold him for £2500 after a bit of work , paid for my holiday that year! :)
16.2 Dutch warmblood £3500 had for three years and sold for £4500
Miniature Shetland £150 still have him!
And last but not least my one I have now which cost all my savings at £11000 :o
