How much did your horses grow after the age of 3?

Bought him aged 4, but may have been rising, at about 16hh, he's literally shot up to 17hh. Did a double take the other day when I went to put my arm over his withers and couldn't reach :o

My last home bred ID x ID/TB was 16.1 at 3 finished at 17.2 at 7yo.
The latest Stinky Face is 2 in April, 15.2 and in a 6'.3" rug. His dad was ID and 17.2, mum a coloured cob at 15.2, full sister is 15.2 and 5yo. He'll be big enough for us whatever he makes, but I do think its interesting how much variation you get with youngsters.

I was speaking to a friend who breeds clydes and shires and the whites of the eyes are common in clydesdales, which is why Teddy has that look I assume. Some people have told me he looks sly and I've not to trust him......poor ted!

I think it gives them a human look about them, definately not sly!! Poor boy!

I know I got all protective over him and wanted to shoot them down! My poor Tedbert...will you be starting your cob this year or waiting until he's 4?

We should compare notes!

Well he's been sat on bareback by all of us ( will post a pic in a sec) have longreined him twice and he's getting the hang of it! He;s been for inhand hacks a fair bit over the summer, so fairly worldwise. Had his saddle fitted last week, and I legged my husband up on him and he was good... so we know thats all good to go, think we will wait until he's 3 properly and sit on him and have a little potter up the road, he will be very lightly ridden this summer. His job will be to hunt when he's a big boy! How about Ted?

He's doing great! Ted has been to a few shows, he loads and travels like a dream and has been fine in traffic so far. He's had his saddle on with no drama and had his bit in. He's still a baby and immature, so no rush. I want him to do riding club stuff and hack out...but we'll see what we both enjoy once he's backed. I'll not be doing that until later this year.

Freds has be desensitised to most things, we are like you, in no hurry, have waited this long, happy to wait a few more mths! He is so solid when you sit on him, you feel like he can't feel you! Heres a pic of me sat on him, was dark and lots going on, like dogs and kids running around and he wasn't bothered in the slightest, these cobs are magical creatures!!

One of my ponies is a 2009 baby. She is just approaching 11.2hh now, she has only grown about an inch taller in the past year but she has filled out. I doubt she will get much, if any taller; her sire is a sec A and her dam is only 35 inches.

Yep he's a solid chap! Teddy isn't that chunky and I can see how much growing and filling out he has to do. Could be years till he's mature. I'm really excited to see how he will look. I think he'd make a good maxi cob. The size is hard to come by so I reckon we have two crackers! Ted has suffered terribly with abscesses in the past and I get very protective of him....he's better now thankfully.

You need to tell me how to train him to go in the trailer! I have trailer, I have car, just haven't tried him yet! Want to show him in the summer! X

Ted has always loved it. I started very calmly and gave him plenty time and rewarded any forward movement, even if he just thought forward and never actually moved his feet. I had in my head that we'd not work on his going in in one go but he did no problem. I spent a few weeks just going round the block 5 mins. Plus I have a mirror in for him too!

We have carefully and calmly led Freds into a trailer, but he did have sedalin on board, when we moved him 11 miles, he was feral/distrusting of horrible humans, we took 3-4 mths to get a halter on him, then moved him, so his experience has been good re the trailer... we shall play with him xx

Oh bless him thank god you got him. Sounds like you've made good progress. Ted has had separation issues but we now have a secret weapon... A fab shettie called khan! They are best friends do I can ride my other cob and leave them safely in the field. It's been years since I've had a gelding and I find him much less brave than a mare...wuss in fact! And it takes him ages to process anything like he's on dial up and not broad band! Lol

Got creature when he was 5. He shot up 2 inches very quickly.

He hasn't been measured in ages and a mate thought he'd grown and sure enough, another inch has appeared! I have no idea when cobs are meant to stop growing!

A three, I reckon yours could easily make another hand.

This thread is scaring me! Bought a TB standing at about 15hh at 4.5 yo, he is now 15.3 and a few days off 7 and I *think* he might still be growing (bum high). I only wanted an ickle pony! I did the string test a while ago and it reckons he should be about 16.1 - eek!

My tb only grew up an inch, but he really bulked up. He's gone from a full to an extra full bridle size and gone up from 6ft rugs to 6.6ft rugs now.
Kx

Mine has got very *bulky* in that time too, gone from a 5ft 9 being a bit loose to a 6ft being just right/slightly snug. Saddle gone from Narrow medium to XXW too.... I hope he just levels out *fingers crossed* He seems to grow more on box rest too and he's been on box rest for the last 11 months on and off!

Freckles was 16hh at 3 years old and never grew another inch... her son however grew and inch last year, and is now 15.3hh and is 6 years old.... (and Freckles full brother grew to 17.3hh)

went to see her grandson yesterday, (Harleys son) and he measured ate 15.3 and looks like he will go up a couple more inches, and he is 3 in April... guess they are all different.

All appies BTW

Rowan is a welsh x appy. He was 14.1hh at 3 years old. Now at rising 6 he is roughly 15hh and just gone bum high again. I doubt he will grow much more, probably just catch up with his bum. He mostly grew outwards- went from 6ft to 6ft6 rug!

Inka is currently 15.1hh and 15.2hh behind and she is 3 years 7 months. She is a connie x ISH (dad was 14.1hh and mum was 16.2hh) She has a lot of growing to do so I expect her to make 15.3hh/ 16hh.

one of my arabs wore a 5ft 6" rug when we bought her at 2 and a half. She then grew into a 5ft 9" until she was 7 and that winter we needed to buy her 6ft rugs. She grew til she was 8 yrs old.
