I have bought a Wintec Pro dressage saddle from ebay and I tried it on him this morning and reaslised that its acually a 17 inch rather than a 17.5 as it was advertised as. I had a sit on it while it was on him but couldn't ride around in it as the gullet size didn't seem right. I love the feel of it generally but I can feel that my seat bones are near the edge of the seat (but not in danger of falling off it) and my knees are near the front of the knee rolls.
I have never ridden in a dressage saddle before - how near should your seat bones be to the edge of the saddle and would half an inch make a huge difference if this is wrong?

I should add that I have been riding him in an 18 inch Wintec VSD and my knees actually poke over the knee rolls in that.

When I bought him the saddler said that ideally he wouldn't have bigger than a 17.5 inch saddle and the back lady thinks his current saddle is hurting his back now he is being asked to do more.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Could you get a saddler out to have a look? Half an inch won't make a huge difference but I would be VERY wary of trying to fit a saddle yourself, could end up doing a lot of damage.

I bought a 17" wintec 2000 (GP) saddle for merlin when I first had him (fitted by a saddler) and found that I could not get my stirrups up for jumping without me knees going over the knee rolls.

Had another saddler from the same shop come out and told me it was far too small for me and that I needed at least a half inch bigger!!!!!!

To be honest I was not best pleased and asked that something be done about being misguided originally but as it was the owner that had sold it too me the other guy wouldnt then do anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say I wont be going back.

Have now got 17.5" Ideal Event saddle and it fits beautifully

LOL! it does sound a bit odd for such a small measurement to make such a difference but I suppose it changes the whole shape of the saddle. The saddler who came out today said it wasn't any good at all

Saddles cause a lot of problems seeing as they're only one bit of kit!!
I was really lucky with mine - I got it from eBay but the lady lived locally and was training as a saddler so she ftted it etc for me.
