How much do 4x4's cost to run??

i hired lorries for years, but at £100 a time every fortnight it was costing me a bomb! I cant believe running a 4x4 can be that expensive so i'm about to sell my petrol Clio and get a Toyota Hilux Surf 3.0TD. I only get 32mpg out of the Clio and my mate gets 25mpg out of the Surf, 20mpg if she's towing. I do about 200miles a week at the moment, but planning to move closer to work soon. I just want the freedom of being able to go out without having to book transport months in advance and then having it cancel on me last minute.
 
Just checked a not so local place that I know of which is £125 for a day plus £20 extra to pick up the night before, can't really justify that!

I need to get on and do my trailer test and I can get myself insured on a friend's Discovery, it's just the thought of doing another driving test terrifies me!!!
