How Much Do I Need - Half Decent Lorry?

Hi everyone. I have recently sold my 4 x 4 and trailer as I needed a runaround for work as I do a lot of miles. I want to get a lorry in the not too distant future, It needs to be 2 horse with a bit of living. I wanted to get together about £5k - do you think think this would get me something half decent to be going on with or would I need more. It would be used every week. Thoughts please, ta xx
 
You should get something for that I would reckon. It will be old (perhaps D or E reg), but no reason why it shouldn't be sound

Paid 6k for mine. I wanted something that was mechanically sound with 12 month MOT so excepted that it would be tatty.
I replaced the floor in the horse area myself (cost approx £300) then did a fair bit of work on the exterior inc re-spray.
Has so far proved a good way to go as has not let me down yet.

I have a C reg Dodge takes 2 big horses and has a bit of living, 12 months plate. Very reliable, just had a new exhaust and battery, and cheap to run. £3,850
 
I have an F reg, low mileage, Leyland Roadrunner, 2 forward facing, living - £5200. It is fab I love it, yes it is not that pretty but if we painted it be scratched to bits going up the lane to our yard

The year the lorry was manufactured. A reg is 1983 or 1984 i think......D reg is 1986. The letter changed annually until 2001 when they went to the new system of 01, 51, 02, 52 etc

Not entirely true as there were 2 letters per year to complete the sequence before they changed to the new system:

ive just bought an F reg cargo ,takes 4 horses,paid 5 grand for it..not got a pic and it will be needing a new floor before the year is out
 
I have a ford cargo 'G' reg 1990 for sale
it has side and rear ramp with day living and awning/stalls for 3 horses outside if it is really hot or raining. mechanically sound, tilting cab for easy maintainence, fit 17hh currently can carry 2 horses and 1 pony without being over the laden weight limit that is for sale at a resonable price if you are interested PM me

Should get something but be prepared to travel and to see some real old dogs before you find what you want!

I was advised by several mechanics to get a Mercedes 814 rather than a Cargo/Roadrunner/similar (we have had a Cargo and had no problems with it) and eventually we did find one in the price range you are looking.

It's old, 1986, 3 horse and living obviously not pristine bodywork but not an old rustbucket.

If you are looking at lorries around that age, speak to someone that knows all the different makes or even better, take them with you. My OH is a welder and spoke to our mechanic about, for example, where Cargos are prone to rot and so he was able to have a good prod about at the ones we looked at.

Actually HH there are lorries of a very similar spec for sale for upwards of 40k

Don't want to tread on any toes but best to steer clear of Cargo's unless it's a euro as you cannot get parts for old cargo's anymore, my dad runs horsebox workshop and he knows his stuff, please please go for mechanically sound not it's looks we have so many in with paint jobs covering many sins and cost people so much money as they didn't have them checked over by a mechanic/mechanically minded person.
you should get something but i will be basic, if you want some more info pm me and i can talk to my dad for you we have a couple for sale that might suit you.....
