And where do we get the money from?

Just added up my monthly costs and quite frightening think it comes to about 350 for two! that involves two jobs, no socialising and going out drinking etc!

wow that makes me feel better! where do you live? yep that's averaging in jabs and stuff as well that's quite a pricey yard for where we live too! maybe it's not that bad!

Well its £182 for livery costs alone.
Diesel + comp fees + lesson fees + feed + shoes + bits and bobs needed= Too bloody much!

My guess would be around the £500 mark but it can be done a lot cheaper than that.

far too much.....

My unfortunate husband foots the bill :-S

.....I don't think he knows how big a bill it is....!!!!

Completely varies with my two. My oldie has cushings (therefore not allowed much grass) and is a poorish doer = haylage all year round (approx £1K alone!), plus a small fortune to maintain the rest of her diet, drugs and supplements.

My other horse get fat on thin air! However, when she was a riding horse my insurance was high, and I paid a fortune in shoes (£75 - every 4 weeks!). Now she's only insured as a brood mare of less value, and only has her feet trimmed every couple of months she's cheap to keep.

I've just been considering bedding.
We have been using Bedmax and it has cost almost £200 per month (for 4). We changed to Bedmax because we had found it very difficult to get decent clean straw but we have been feeding lovely clean barley straw this year. Sowe decided earlier today to go back to straw beds next winter and use barley straw if current supplier can't get us wheat straw -£30 per big bale should work out much cheaper!

About 650 a month in total and I pay for it out of my income... I'm lucky, I'm never short of work and if I want something new (For instance it's a new showing saddle) I work a weekend and badabing... new saddle)

I have never dared to add it all up. I look in my cheque book and virtually all the items are for the horse - feed, feet, competition entries, teeth, etc. etc. I don't even have to pay livery as mine is at home. OH doesn't complain although he has a pretty good idea what it all costs.

So true! Whenever I go to the feed store and see what people pay for stuff for their horses to ***** on, (it's gone up a fair whack since I last bought shavings or similar, 5 years ago) I am so glad I have a well drained field and horses that like living out! :D

Too bloody much says my OH. I just ask him would he rather have a high maintenance wife who shops constantly or a happy content wife who gets out of his hair for at least 3 hours a day!
Besides I work full time and the money comes out of my salary, the rest of my salary is for all our other luxuries.
My bill can vary from 600 Euros a month to 850 a month for 3. Depends on when the farrier has been, vaccinations due, dentist been, worning done, rugs cleaned ete etc etc.
Seems pretty good value for money when I see what some of you are paying.

I've often thought about this too. After roughly adding it all up, I must spend around £200 a month, more during the summer taking into account the costs involved with going to shows. I'm very lucky to be livering with a good friend, so that cost cold be alot more and with Fred living out 24/7 all year round, that too has seriously reduced my costs. After spending out for the odd new rug etc, I don't think I do too bad. I'm self employed, so my income does change from month to month, but Fred still gets everything he needs. :)

Well livery bill is on average £450 a month.....I like to stop there! I just think that feed, farrier, insurance, lorry etc etc just comes within that...ha ha I WISH. Like the mastercard advert......the pleasure my four legged friend brings....PRICELESS xxx

I have been way over budget all winter since I got back from Cyprus. Last month I spent £700 on 2 big horses 17.1 and 16.3. That's £700 more than I've got and I don't even get to ride at the mo!! DIY Livery is £243 for both. So I told the girl who has been trying out one of them since Jan (with view to loan) that I needed her to pay the livery if she wanted to have all the fun or I'd have to advertise before I get in more debt. I am thinking of getting a weekend job :-(

my monthly bill is pretty scary. here goes:
540 for livery
37.50 for shoeing
100 for diesel

then every three months:
56 for superflex
18 for naf veteran supplement
20 for worming
50 for dentist

guess it doesn't help that i totally spoil my boy with matchy matchy

So far this year I have spent £1600, I decided it would be a good idea to see how much I spend on horse in a year, am dreading December. But that does include everything, insurance, feed, livery, services, farrier(trim only) rugs, etc. As she is newly backed I expect it to increasea lot with lessons.

My horse bill ranges between £400 to £520 per month. This includes 4 lessons, vet costs, insurance, shoeing, feed and my DIY livery plus any livery extra's. In the winter I pay £120 extra a month to have my horse fed, rugs changed and turned out in the mornings and brought in. At the moment, i'm paying about £60, when the horses can stay out 24/7 it will cost me nothing and work out at £400 a month.

My yard is not the cheapest but it has fab facilities, they look after the land and horses really well and hay and straw is included.

That said - it doesn't include any bits of tack or rugs but i'd rather spend my money on my horse so it doesnt bother me :)

this thread is making me decide to start adding up what my neddies are costing me and actually work it out...it just easy paying little bills here and there, vet here, shoes there, feed, supplements etc- i am definately goin to take a leaf out of a few of your books and start actually finding out how much they cost me! I would guess around £200 p/month

Well I have one horse on full livery and one on grass livery and thanks to the pesky hay prices I am paying £800 for the two thats including shoes plus the yard is just outside London which is apparently a good reason to charge so much???? But the yard is lush, people friendly, horses very happy and I never worry about them so its worth it:p

Currently about £600 for two big horses (including full insurance for a Shetland who is out on loan but I carry on his insurance)

I'm saving for a lorry and should have that in a year, then it will be more with diesel and comp fees etc.

I pay for it out of my salary. When I was on a lower salary I just had one horse, I'm now lucky enough to afford the two without any difficulty.

My gelding alone cost me £400 a month and that's not including petrol I use, wormers, injections, teeth, back, saddle fitting, transport and all the rugs and treats and tack and other bits I buy him!

It's quite scary to think about! The majority of my wage goes on him. I'm left with nothing after all my bills. How the hell will I ever get a mortgage?!! :(

^^^^ I worry about this too! My costs are exactly the same as yours.
