So I am in my mid 50's have had some pretty bad accidents over my life, broke most things, legs, ankles, arms, pelvis and neck - so today I have really felt achey in every single joint.
I got out the car after riding and I looked like Gollum...
I am okay on the horse, getting on is fine as long as the horse stands stiil but today the cold shot up my legs when i hopped off, none of mine are bigger than 16.1 thankfully, as I never had anything less than 17.2 when I was younger.

how is everyone else doing

There was a thread on this before and interestingly it’s mainly cos we don’t stretch etc. Bit of gym work would help massively. It’s also a sign of menopause loss of strength and bone density so that can be addressed. I think because the weather turned today here to northerly wind and damp I too feel 96. Actually 60!

Age 66. Getting off is the worst 😳.

Was fit enough to ride for six hours in a single day last year, however it took me two goes to dismount! Was grand an hour later, then wrecked for a week.

I can manage 2 x 2 hour rides in a day with a 2 hour gap in between quite easily.

ETA Mind you, I am still recovering from Covid bout #4 and haven’t ridden since early July, so it’s going to take a fair while to back to that.

My main issue is sciatica so I have to be careful with how much I do, I get a bit of shoulder pain but not all the time and my right elbow aches more in winter I think from all the haynets I make.

I have a metal plate in my ankle from when I broke it but it doesn't give me that much trouble.

My horses are fairly small being Arabs so easier to get on and off, I can't do hours and hours in the saddle anymore my back and knees will ache, but quite honestly long hacks dont interest me much now.

I'm 53

Just about 64 and I ache a lot but that is maybe something to do with the stone wall I hit falling of my horse on Friday! I do suffer from constant pain anyway but on the whole when actually riding the movement helps. I use nightly ibrofen , deep heat patches and try and swim a few times a week. I have given up any hope of ever being pain free but just keep active and work through it.

I’m a physical wreck but I have lupus so I don’t have the best body or joints. Aged 40, survive on a cocktail of pain relief. Unfortunately I can’t really withstand more than 20-25 mins light schooling, I feel like every ounce of life is being drained from me. I can manage a 40 minute walking hack but my back is wrecked by the end. I’ve had to massively adjust my riding aims, which is sad, but such is life.

I have the Chiro every 4 weeks.

Always a bit and has been since I was 15 as I'm a bit hypermobile. Definitely a bit stiffer in the last couple of years and less able to dance all night like I used too (but I also drink less 😅). I do my physio most days.

Mid 30s not so bad during the summer but I'm definitely starting to feel it now.

My hands take about half an hour to be able to hold things in the mornings and then knees and back are the other main culprits.
Dismounting after a cold ride is almost comical. Haven't been able to get off the 'proper' way for years. I swing my leg over the front then sort of hug and slither. Even then if it's been cold or 2+ hours I'm on my backside for a minute more often than not... yes my horse is a darling (usually!)

I'm hypermobile so joint pain is pretty standard and have arthritis in my hands and elbow.

I have been riding since I was 61 and am still fine to ride at 85. This isnt clever. Riding doesnt feel much different to 15 years ago.
I have broken my ankles walking and they ache if I land carelessly on dismounting and my lower spine would hurt if I rode sitting trot or canter for too long or too far. But my only real ache is in my right forefinger where I wrenched it on a car door last November.

None of my aches and pains are due to riding. On the contrary, riding keeps me mobile and better balanced.

51 and ache a lot!

Pirifomis syndrome is the bane of my life. Causes me some degree of pain pretty much all the time, and is bad enough at the moment to be waking me up at night.

Also, 20 years of running 30 miles a week has left me with very achy knees. I currently have to sit on Bo with my feet out of the stirrups for a minute or two before dismounting.

It was only when I stopped milking for a living that I discovered how much my hands had been aching. The pain had slowly built up. Now they only ache if they are allowed to get cold or if I have been eating citrus fruits or tomatoes. My knees also need to be kept warm, so thermal leggings are employed before the weather gets to them. My hips stopped me riding several years ago as they started to cramp, deep water aquafit is freeing them up.

If I was a horse I would have been shot many years ago.

60s, had a trip fall nearly 2 weeks ago (own feet - not off equine - over dog (not mine) at coal face) still awaiting bruising to heal, havent ridden since as creaking and have sent schooler equine back home.
Lower back and hips are screaming at me to ride, ribs saying 'do not in any way'.
Was cheerfully hacking out for an hour daily Inc schooling on the go, 6 days a week, had completed a mounted orienteering without aches etc the week before.

Made arrangements today to ride later this week on friends horse....am irriot....🤔

I am in a lot of pain so don't ride now in my early 60s. Sadly, I have a number of condition which contribute to this and I'm on 11 prescribed drugs and I decided it wasn't fair to have a horse after I lost my last one. I see a massage therapist every four weeks and get topped up with steroid injections from my rheumatologist each visit which help a little. However, the joy of horses never leaves and I'm very grateful for that along with many happy riding memories.

54 and after a day standing around at a groundwork training course today (total 3days ) I ache all over and have also have plantar fasciitis in my left foot which is painful. Always have a tendency towards lower back pain but would be mainly wear and tear and no major injuries. I’m on HRT and I can’t say I’ve noticed it having much effect on my overall wellbeing.

36 and ache a lot! Summer isn’t too bad but I do find poo picking horses out 24/7 takes its toll in winter. My problem area is my lower back gets tight, that then also gets tight with normal walking and lifting. I also have a desk job and I’m my own worst enemy for not getting up and taking breaks. I don’t have ridden horses anymore.

I “treat myself” to a sports deep tissue massage once a month. I would cut out other luxuries in life before I’d give that up! And I go to the gym a few times a week, either low impact cardio or swim.

41 and currently very sore after landing on my butt last weekend after misjudging a jump!
I’ve got chronic niggling back problems but have started doing reformer pilates this year which is the best thing for my back ever- I really notice if I don’t go for a couple of weeks.

65 and I injured a foot last winter which has taken until now to just about heal. Because I've been struggling to walk I've got incredibly unfit and now everything is hard work and everything aches.

I'm 64 and creaky. My left hip hurts a lot of the time, my left leg doesn't really work as it should when I'm on a horse and my only way of dismounting is to lift my leg over my horse's neck and slide down the saddle to the ground (which is a long way as she's 17:1). I feel better for riding though and am pretty balanced once onboard.

Grade 4 arthritis of the thumb and an ankle that is prone to giving way to the outside. Minor aches and pains and back and neck ache. I see the chiropractor every three months which keeps the pain manageable. I’m 33.

I am nearly 62. I don’t really ache. Reasonably flexible and strong and can leap off athletically (but pony is 13hh!!) Ride nearly every day. Came back from a ride today and needed a bath to warm up and fell asleep!
So yes, feeling my age 😊

Mid 50s and I ache every day, even sleeping can be uncomfortable.
Many broken bones over the years - not all horse related - have resulted in hip arthritis in my right hip. Added to that, I also have a hip impingement. End result I will need a hip replacement but, for now, I do lots of stretching, strengthening exercises and I have a special pillow to put between my legs when sleeping - it keeps my hips aligned. I have a sports massage every 6 weeks - that helps a lot as well as daily painkillers.

Mid forties and have suffered with on-off back and neck pain since I was 20. As my osteopath says, it's "only muscular" but it can be very annoying and puts me in a grumpy mood. I have mild scoliosis, which doesn't help. Riding is fine, luckily, so I can go for long hacks. I need to take up yoga and strength training... But will I? 💪😂

Wow, this thread is making me feel very grateful. I'm so sorry so many of you are living with pain.

I'm 52, worked with horses most of my life, with a few breaks here and there. I muck out seven a day, poo pick fields every day, do all the yard stuff and ride three or four big athletic warmbloods every day, I have broken a couple of bones over the years, had some metalwork put in and removed a couple of years later, but they dont bother me at all. I'm prone to an achey lower back, I have quite a curved spine, and waitressing in my younger years really didnt help, I teach now, and if I have to do a days teaching on my feet I hurt, but generally I can sit when I teach (and move about) and then I'm fine.

I swim a mile three times a week, but the most important thing for keeping me mobile, strong and pain free is pilates, I do a class once or twice a week and do a short session at home most days, if I dont do the pilates I start to feel it.
