how much do you know about your horses history and when it was broke

my old boy
22 years old. bought him as weanling from the girl who had his mother. backed him myself

my 4 year old
came from his breeder as a 2 1/2 year old colt. backed him myself

my 12 year old anglo mare
came from her breeder as a 10 year old unbroken brood mare. backed her myself

my chestnut mare
previous owner had her several years, bought her from her first owners who put her in a sale.

my new mare
previous owner had her from breeder.

From when she was 2 and moved into a field across the road from my sister. Know the lovely girl who backed her, but didn't have time to bring her on, so she had basically done nothing until I got her as a 7 year old.

I bought her on very slowly as I had a new baby. I believe her low mileage as a youngster is the reason she is so tough and sound now (winning 160km endurance rides and competing season after season).

Seeing the miles other people put on young horses, I would only ever buy an unbacked youngster or from someone I know, as 'too much too young' significantly shortens their working lives.

I know about Genie's past up to June last year... She was bought from Llanelli and sold to me about 6 weeks later as a 5 year old. I believe she was in Llanelli from the age of 2, but am trying to find out more info!

I got one of mine when he was about 5 and i know that he apparantly came from dealers before that but thats all i know. I have no idea about any of the others past i just got him from a dealer. And my yearling i know his past from day one lol

I bought my mare as an unbroken 3 year old at the sales and have had her for 14 years now. The only thing I would like to know is why she doesn't like her ears being messed with!

My gelding is also 17 and I got him 5 years ago from a dealer. I know he had come over from Ireland as a 6 year old and had only ever hunted before I bought him. I have so many questions I would love to ask his previous owners, as he's completely screwed up!! I suspect I'd like to beat his previous owners with a blunt instrument as well, for not doing a proper job with him as a youngster - it's very difficult to try and sort out a stroppy 12 year old.

I know what she was up to from the age of 6/7 as my old instructor knew her... she's now 10, I bought her as a 7yo. I don't know much at all before that. Though would guess she was backed as a late 4/5yo, from when she was sold (on her passport) and what she is like.

I know Archies history from when he was born.

Born, bought from the field at about a year then ran with herd. Bought as a two year old colt, gelded soon after. Handled a plenty then broken as late 3 year old in November 2005. I tried him in January 2006 and actually bought him in April as owner kept him for me until I could sort out finances, stabling, etc. Been with me ever since. He is a wonderful hack, very kind and brilliant on the ground. He was started slowly and has been brought on slowly. He is now 7 and really is totally unspoit.

He has always been wormed and teeth and jabs kept up to date. (Touching wood), never ill, never lame ... I am very, very lucky.

My pony is 10, I bought him when he was 5. I have known him since he was 4 as he belonged to my YO before I bought him. Before that, he came from Ireland and so I don't know anything else about his history. I sometimes wish I could find his breeder but I don't know where to start looking - Ireland's a big place!

Bought my horse aged 13, knew very little about him, only that he had done a little grade C SJ years ago, that he had hunted and did the BHS XC championships 2001. Apart from that knew nothing.

HOWEVER

After a year of owning him I was contacted by someone who saw a video of him on youtube, she owned him age 4 and sent me lots of photos of him, gave me his registered name etc. So only missing details on who broke him in, all I know was he was a complete nutcase when she bought him from the dealer!

know everything about them like to buy unbroken youngsters then know they have not been spoilt by anyone else greatest achivement completing Bramham on one I broke myself YEEEEEHAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first horse is now 30. He was a film horse before I bought him, owned by David Goodey, Foxhill Stables, Reading in the 1980's the biggest film yard in the country.

I know David bought him from Reading Horse Sales he was part of a driving pair. Prior to that he was owned by a lady in Newbury. Try as I may I can find nothing of his early life or the name of the Newbury owner. Carriage Driving even published an article about him.

So if anyone knows of a pair of bay geldings about 15.3hh sold at Reading Sales in the early 1990's to David Goodey do pm me.

What's his name ? I used work at Foxhill around then.

T was 5 when I got her. I spoke to a dealer who bought her as a 2 year old, in a field. He sold her to a novice that had her for a year. Not the best match. I backed her and brought her on. She's now 9.

F was 3 when I got her. She was brought off New Forest and in a field for 3 years with nothing more done with her than getting a headcollar on. She's now been handled, goes for walks in-hand or led from another horse, picks up feet and ties up.

My boy is 20 yrs old, I've owned him since he was 10. Before that a young girl had him from the age of 5. She did pony club, hacking and local shows. She sold him as she went to university.

His previous owner bought him from his breeder at age 3 (where he had lived in a herd environment) and started him. I am in touch with both previous owners but not his breeder as she has died. So I am lucky enough to know where he has been and with whom for his whole life.

Mine's 15 and I've had him 7 years. I know a lot about the 6 months before that as he was with the person I bought him from for that time - she bought him from a woman in Gloucestershire who apparently had had him a year before that - I wrote to that woman who owned him then for more info but she didn't reply so I know nothing of 0-6. I would love to know his background - I think he may have been a pony that came off May Hill but I don't know for sure. All I know is he'd never been in a stable before he was 7, had never had his teeth looked at til that time. My instructor reckoned he is 2 years younger than we think he is.

Not a lot 23 years now. Abandoned livery bought by previous owners after he was used in riding school as he was left in a field after non payment, well whatever they did was a good job. They think he took the P in the riding school as could be a tad stubborn but not at all nasty. Not push button ride. No wonder I have big thighs!

Believe to possibly come from Gypsys and had driven(I have always put that down to why he is excellent in all traffic doesnt bat eyelid). So they did a good job on that front. But he got arthritis in his back end legs and vet puts that down to driving, he is a heavy old beastie for 14.1.

I think he is older add 5 years. I would love to know where he came from though.

Just spotted this was an ancient post from July 09 that has resurfaced, but still interesting to read as never saw it before!

Micah is 7 now and I got him from a dealer. He was imported a few months before I had him from Czech rep

THrough the web I managed to trace his old owner. She had bred him and backed him. Then sold him to someone on her yard who later sold him to my dealer.

so I know everything, she sent me photos of when he was a foal and when he was being backed etc. Told me all his good and bad points too:D

I know where mine was bred, she was then sold as a foal and I bought her as a rising five year old and broke her myself. She is now eighteen, so I know all of her history.

whisper we've had since she was 2- broke her in myself, and she will never be sold. she is 17 now. :D so i know her like the back of my hand!

tego we bought as a "16" year old... although i think she was a bit older than that (although you'd never know... you would hae sworn she was stuck at age 5...!) we know a lot from the lady we bought her from... but not the full life history. she is a gem of a pony... but getting a bit long i the tooth now!

Willow since she was 20 mins old! :D and she was bred to keep. :D xx

Mine is 21

I used a showjumping website to find the name of a past rider and used facebook to track him down to being bought wild off a mountain behind Belfast Zoo as a 4 yr old :) hence the name Mountain City :) x

All of it, she was bred by a lady who backed her at 3 1/2. At 4 she went to another home, event and race yard as a project (a young lady had a broken Horse and wanted something else to focus on) Then I got her as a 5 year old (nearly 6) Previous owners have given me some photos of her when she was 2

I love the stories of people tracing their horses' history - the owner of my old horse (now 26) traced me via HHO a year ago and it was sooo lovely to hear how he's doing.

As for my current two, P I bought as a rising 5yo from a trainer in Spain who had him for about 7 months - he was already broken before that but hadn't done a lot. Not sure of his history before that - he was bred in Cadiz by someone who seems to breed 2 or 3 a year and, according to his Spanish vaccination paper, changed hands a lot as a youngster, which is not unusual out there as many will sell if someone offers an extra 50 Euros!!

My other horse was bred here - http://www.agropecuariaelancla.com - and I met him when he'd just been taken to the trainer's yard as a rising 3yo having been running with the herd on the studfarm until then. I was the first person to brush his legs and the second person to sit on him!
