Due to bad weather and other reasons hay and straw prices have shot up.

Just wondering
What do you pay for your hay or straw?
Do you have big or small?
Are you struggling getting hay and/or straw?

I have small bales of hay and i pay £2.50 and luckily our prices arn't going up. Don't use big round bales, but might have a few this year i don't think they would be that much about £15. Don't use straw. Not struggling, "touch wood" x

Thanks In Advance

small bale of hay here this year £4.25 ive bought 200 bales

small bale of hay here last year £3.95

Hay at a couple of local agricultural merchants is 3.50 and 4.00 per small bale. About 50 pence dearer than last year. I've heard that stocks are selling fast. They were short last season too.

We cut our own haylage and have slightly more large bales than last year.

large heston bales of haylage last year were £25 and have rumours thst they might go up to £40 this winter.
straw ive heard is going to be £20 per bale.
little bale haylage is going for about £4.50 this year

i think im going to be in an opposite situation to last winter where i ran out and had to buy it in - ive had 1 cut off my field and got 27 bales, ive got the 2nd cut and waiting baling and theyve said i should get at least 3 times as much as the first cut - i only need 60 bales in total so will have about 50 too many and will need to sell them!

I know, silly price. Its because we had the hay which all the top racehorse trainers buy so they can afford it at that price (maybe not all) but no way were my parents paying that price!!

Thanks for replies, alteast hay hasn't gone up to much. We cut our hay last year but still didn't have enough for the winter, so hat to order from our local hay stockist x

Mum ordering our hay load next week, i think she ordering 300 or around that area!

£40  not cheap!!

Thats not to bad then, so atleast you gonna make some money :p x

yeah not cheap at all is it, thank god im not having to buy in - my haylage billed would be awful if i did.
Only problem is about selling is i have no transport to deliver it or means of getting it onto said transport if i had it - hoping the farmer will do me a deal and take it off my hands for a reasonable price as i dont want it left and being wasted - hoping he might agree to swap some for straw

Have been very lucky just got 1000 bales of hay for £1.75 a bale.

Straw normal price for me, 38p a bale, I am friends with a farmer so I only pay for it to be baled.

Farmers round here though this week have all got a second cut of hay in and are saying things are going to be better than first thought.

I'm not on straw but if I was its £15 a month plus vat for unlimited supply within reason from heston bales. We have had a load of small bale straw delivered at work and TBH it is not upto last years quality.
As for hay, we are on flat 10's so bigger than a standard bale and packed so not like your standard small floppy bales, I can only just lift them and they are currently £5 from the yard although I think that the new stuff will be going up to £6 but it is good quality rye mix similar to what we feed the TB's at work. It has a good energy content so there is no need to feed a lot either.

Normally I've paid £2 to £2.50 per square bale of hay. This year because of all the hay-shortage panic (which I dont see - our weathers been fine for it!) we've just paid £3.50 per hay square bale. Damn expensive if you ask me!

I get small bales of hay and straw...hay is 3 bales for £10 and straw is 3 bales for £5 including delivery. I remember the days when you could get hay for £1 a bale :(

£17 for a straw bale 5/3/3 foot. Including delivery.

haylage £24.50 a round bale, delivered.

been told by the farmer that he's reserved what our yard needs for us, all the rest has already been sold

sm x

crikey you lot have got it easy!! hay is up to a minimum of £5 a small bale not sure on straw at the yard our round bales of hay are going to be £35 i believe which isn't bad i am paying £6 a small bale of haylage (from the same suppliers as last year up £1) or £5.50 from one the lovely girls on the yard found.

Just got mine - delivered

Large round bales

Straw : £12
Hay : £20

Have a local man I can get straw delivered for £8 if I run out, plus I managed to get a load of last years hay (kept indoors) for £8 per bale.
