Just curious, my daughter is a competitive showjumper, shows are usually every other weekend. How much do ride/jump/hack etc between shows? What would your weekly plan look like?
Caveat being I’m not a sj’er, or particularly interested in SJ’ing - but I did do a stint working on an international sj yard.
The horses were worked pretty much every day - especially the ones who were too institutionalised to get turnout. The handful that did turnout often got a day off a week and went out.
Id say 80% of their work, minimum, was flatwork in the school.
2 or 3 of the horses who liked hacking would hack once a week.
They all did surprisingly little jumping at home (I’m not sure if this is normal or not, certainly the eventers for which I’m far more up to speed with do more at hone). I’d say at this yard they maybe got jumped once every 10 days plus shows.
I used to work with a SJ'er, they would have a jump before a show, but most work would be a go on the flat or, more often, a ride out. We did a lot of cantering on hills.
If there was an issue, they would have 'repair' sessions.
Youngsters would also have more schooling, various exercises. But, the experienced grade A ones, mainly had a jump before a show and other than that, mainly riding in the open on hills.
With my horse who I showjump I tend to do one fitness, one lunge, one hack, one lesson, and one flat in a show week and then if I'm not at a show I'll jump on the day I would be at a show, she normally has one rest day a week! It totally depends on the horse though she's younger so needs a bit more jumping practice between shows than an older more established horse would!
As above, I spent time on a top SJ yard when I was younger and was surprised at how little jumping they did. My friend was also a sjer and only popped over a jump a day or two before a show.
