Just interested in how much you spend on feed on a monthly basis for horses who are turned out in winter?

I reckon it's about £20-£30 per month for a retired horse over winter... but a friend said that was way too low!

Thanks in advance!

Depends if you are counting cost of hay in with monthly feed bill or not.

Without hay I reckon my feed bill is about about £30 a month but with hay add on another £20 a month

I have a Sec D x who is still growing at just under 2 years of age

if mine were turned out for the winter he'd be fed a small bale of haylage a day at £4, and some balancer - £16 every month... so £130 ish, but he's a big horse and if he wasn't ridden he wouldn't be rugged, so fed fibre to keep warm.

as it is I spend...
£11 a week on mix, £7 a week on chaff (bag lasts a fortnight), £6 a week on speedibeet, and £28 a week on haylage

About £20 a month for two; one bag of Fast Fibre and one of Speedi- beet

They are out about 20 hours a day all year, so I only use about one bale of hay a week which is about £3 a bale atm.

Depends on horse, mine are all goed doers and on a rough field (the ones out 24/7) they get loads of haylage when weather hits hard and a token feed of hi-fi light and watever cheap mix I can get plus a multi vitamin and mineral supplement. So for me It costs approx per horse when feeding haylage feed and mins £30 each per 4 wks. Of course thats feed not wormers Farrier Dentist Vets if needed.

I'd say it does rather depend on if the horse is a good doer or not. I know people who spend an absolute fortune on poor doers, fortunatly mine are fattys! Over the winter they have ad lib hay which the yard charges £9 pw ph for (haylage is rocket fuel for one of them so we stick to hay), then fast fibre, with a bit extra kwikibeet of the weight starts sliding - usually only a scoop of food each day though so pretty cheap! One of them has a joint supp, the other has a respiritory supp so that adds a bit. Over all, per month I would guess they cost about £60 per month to feed including everything.

Feed wise each month get through bag of hifi lite, bag of fiberbeet and fast fiber. So thats around £25 for them then supplements which are around £40 a month as well.

This is going to scare me!!!!

40 bales off a hay = £105
half bag topspec anti lam = £15
3 bags off topspec balancer = £90
topspec topchop lite = £8
alfa a = £18
speedybeet = £18
topspec fibre plus cubes = £27
total £ oh loads but is for 4 horses.

mine gets thru a bag of Hi-Fi a month in winter, so £10 a month, plus £100 for haylage which lasts from dec - april. then his usual supplements of garlic and brewers yeast which is peanuts anyway. he lives out 24/7, is 14 and is ridden probably 2 or 3 times a week in winter.
