Sorry for another transport thread but I am still pondering how much money I would need to afford it...

I am just wondering what the average annual running costs of a box are, and also how it compares to a trailer with bigger car.

The main one I am interested in is the Renault master type van conversions but I am a bit concerned the vehicles they tend to use can be bit on the old side! How old is old enough to steer clear do we think?

I have a nice little car but this year I have had the cam belt changed, need some new tyres soon and I know all these things are part of the cost, but I only use it about once a week really so I am thinking money might be better spent towards something horse accommodating!

I feel I could get away with popping to sainsburys in the van types, could get loads of shopping in with horsey but she might eat all the biscuits :-)

Hiya
Ive got an old 6.5 tonne box (G reg dodge) .. tax is £165 insurance £220 plus another £120 breakdown cover. Diesel wise it does about 25 miles per gallon. Mot £99. Relatively cheap to maintain, though tyres cost me £120 each when I needed them and I needed 4! .
For a pre-mot check and a small amount of work it cost approx £300 this year.

I used to have a trailer, but I work 45 miles from home and the cost of running a 4x4 for this distance daily would have been greater.

I would imagine a 3.5 tonne will be cheaper, as mot would be cheaper for a start, but hope this helps a bit.

I think to be sensible with an older box, you have to work on the basis of a certain amount of work needing doing each year.

For a 3.5T older box including tax insurance etc I would say min £500 a year up to £1000
For a 7.5T older box I would say £1k +

We used to run a 7.5T but have recently swapped to a 3.5T. Both ancient and so requiring regular TLC to be well maintained.
