how much do you spend on your horse?

Omigod I dont think I want to write this down...Each month....
Stable rent for 4 £600
Part livery(ex feed,bedding) for 1 £280

Shavings £300
Additives for some & medicine for 1 with EMS £100
Farrier £400 (1 has Jimmy Choos)
Insurance £200
Schooling £400

Plus shows, lorry running costs- diesel,insurance and they always seem to need something renewing, mending etc., wormers, clipper blade sharpening, tools..... i could go on but don't want to think about it too much!
 
I worked this out a while ago, but can't (or didn't want to!) remember :eek::rolleyes:

Four horses at DIY = £902.52 Oops.
Rent (x 52, then / 12) £314.17
Straw (a bale a week-ish as on mats and just have a covering) £13.00
Hay (1.5 bales a day in winter, say six months worth) £159.69
Feed (prob going not Topspec Balancer, and sugar or alpha beet) £45.00
Extra supplements reduced due to the Balancer (covers the probiotic that I had the Pink Powder for, and the msm) but still have Milk Thistle for the two on Bute, can't remember how much it is though!
Bute at two sachets a day (two neds when needed) £30.33
Farrier (3 barefoot, 1 fronts only) £40.00
Saddler (two checks a year) £7.50
Dentist (two horse's checked twice a year, one due to age and the other due to a couple of wonky teeth) £17.50
Worming £16
Vaccs (can't remember how much they are!)
Insurance (self insure two and have BHS Gold Membership) £52.33
Competitions (one a month at the moment, two of us competing (unaffiliated dressage and showjumping) not taking account of fuel) £24.00

I've gone from spending lots,having new rugs,tack, I even had 2 new saddles at one time for one horse,and a new trailer and 4x4 to tow it.Now I am at the other extreme, I try and spend as little as possible,no competing any more so sold trailer, only do trims and feed hay which we make ourselves. if they need anything extra in the winter its a bit of sugarbeet and rolled oats. I even hunt on foot nowadays instead of on horseback.

You could sell them and buy a bighouse for that! I have a friend who did this about 15 years ago. Wish I had,then I wouldnt be stuck in my tiny terraced, with a net income of £1200 per month. Its difficult to manage .
 
Yep - bearing in mind I've had between 1 and 6 horses for the last 35 years, I could probably have live in a stately home and driven a Ferrari if I hadn't had the horses! But, I have never regretted any of them and don't begrudge a penny of the money I've spent on them. I've only ever sold a couple and then to friends who I know will loook after them. I had my first horse for 25 years until he died aged 38, and 2 of the ones I have now I've had for 20 and 17 years. But it is still mind boggling when I start writing it down...
 
Having gone from having 1 horse on full livery and having vast amounts spent on him, I am going to enjoy adding up the cost of keeping my 2 youngsters -

No livery costs as they are at home (although cost of fencing when that needs doing is quite expensive, but won't need doing for many years)

Hay - I use about 1 large bale every fortnight over winter - costs about £450 per year - approx £40 per month - £20 per horse

Feed - handful of hifi each with suregrow balancer -£25 per month - £12.50 per horse

Farrier - £20 trim each every 8 weeks - £10 per month per horse

Insurance - £50 something per year for BHS gold membership (have saving for vets fees) - About £3 per month per horse!

Jabs - just have tetanus at £30 every 3 years - 90p per month per horse!

Poo picker - this is my main expense - I pay someone to do my poo picking as I hate it with a passion - still only costs £30 per month per horse.

Harrowing/rolling/reseeding - cost me about £80 last year for local farmer to do it and fix a few bits of fencing at the same time - £4 per month per horse

So in total - just over £80 per month per horse :)

I was spending over £500 per month just on livery, so lots of spare money for me now!

Right here goes! :-s

I have 3 ponies which are in at night and out during the day in winter and out 24\7 in summer.

Livery £160 month
Insurance £60 month
Haylage £50 month
Shoeing x 1 and trim £40 month
Shavings £14 month

They don't get hard feed they just get veg peelings which I get from work. So that's £320 a month for 3 ponies.

That's not to bad looking at some of the others. There are extras like teeth, vaccines, wormers but I get money for christmas and birthdays so this gets saved for that!
 
We have three atm (1 tb, 1 native x and 1 welsh) although may be getting another at some point next year.

Have them at home so no livery costs and grow our own hay which saves a fair bit.
They only come in when the weather is very bad so max we ever spend on straw is £50 per year - so £4 per month.
Feed is around £20 in winter and probably £10 in summer.
Farrier costs £95 every 10-12 weeks (they're all unshod) so approx £40 per month.
Dentist £250 per year so around £20 per month.
Vaccinations £80 per year so about £7 per month.
Wormers are probably between £120 and £150 depending on which we are using, so £10-12 per month.
Extras such as saddler/physio probably comes to around £250 so just over £20 per month.
Have BHS membership for third party insurance and savings account for vets bills.

So all together we pay an average of around £120 per month for the three.
 
I keep spreadsheets of all my accounts as it was the only way I could keep my head above water before I got my new job back in July! I still keep them
Horse costs for me were between £250-£350pcm
