Im just wondering how much we all spend on our horses? Sorry if its been done before but b reaking it down is quite scary!!!
Dont feel like you need to reply as I know some people like to keep it private!!
I have 3 horses and I brought my first horse which I paid for 2 years ago, previous to this my mum had always funded our horses/ponies!

Ok I spend a week...This is for 3!!

£75 for stable
£15 for field
£48 for shavings
£36 for hay
£38-£52 for feed

Then my farriers bill is £160 every 5 weeks.
Wormers and vets bills etc-

And this month I have had to buy new rugs and tack for my new loan horse, a new saddle for one of my tbs, also a few luxuries incl a 5 point breastplate and some new saddle cloths!!

Oh and also a new hat as mine had a big crack and a new body protecter as I have lost a bit of weight :eek:

Mad when you think about it isn't it!!! Oh and I also forgot fuel to yard, comp fees, and masses of diet coke and malboro lights to keep me going throughout the day at the yard!!!

Blimey! There's ways you can cut that right down hun. Not sure why you have to pay £25 per ned per stable then extra for field usage/grazing but I bet you can get better deals than that if you look around. Also £48 per horse per WEEK for shavings????? Why are you using 2 shavings bales per horse per week in the middle of summer when you're already paying for turnout? Ditto for the hay. Ditto for the feed. If you found a decent livery package, you could keep neds out eg 18 or 20 hrs per day, just bringing them in for a few hours during the middle of the day to rest full bellies and give them respite from the flies. If the grazing is ok, you wouldn't need any hay, maybe just a handful of pony nuts for them to look forward to coming in for (makes life easier), and 1 bale of shavings per horse would last you at least a month! Hunt around on e-bay for rugs, numnahs etc. And of course the biggest saving you can make, both to your pocket and to your health is to ditch the cigs.

I'm lucky because I have a close friend who lives on a farm. I just pay £20/week for everything.

Will probably be a different story when I have to move her though!

I try not to calculate how much i spend, because I'd probably sell them if i knew exactly. I was living in a council house until this time last year, and i had 3 horses, that were kept at my dads. My friend moved house, and offered me her place for €650 per month. 5 bed house, big bedrooms, lovely place, BUT it came with 7 acres, huge shed, that has 4 stables(which are big), kennels - her husband was into greyhounds - that have a huge run attached, for my dogs!! Last winter, i had 6 horses, i'm now down to 3, had to put my 2 favourite down, but thats another story, and I sold my filly. So I now have 3 for this winter, and a foal, but i hope to get a customer for her before she's weaned. XXX.
€30 per roumd bale of straw, lasts a week, €35 per round bale of hay, which lasts a week, I buy oats directly from farmer, so €50 will buy me 10 bags. I also but a coarse mix that has all the added extras for €7 per bag. Worm doses and farrier on top of that works out at €100 per week, and i dont have to pay rent on stables, assuch, thrown in with the house. Oh, and show enteries arent even in that, or hunting cap fees. Horses will never make us money unless we have the capital to have our own yard and have liveries. Bring on winning the lotto!!!!!!

i have my mrs at home for the summer and when shes there she costs me about a £1 in food if its a week without the farrier.

i brought a bag of feed for £10 5 weeks ago and ive used about a 10th of it.

my farrier costs 55 pounds every 7 weeks.

in the winter shes goes on working livery she does 3 hours a week and eveything for her costs me £50 in total a week. stable and grassing and full livery and i can ask for her to be schooled if i want. (included in the £50).

altho i did pay 5000 for her 2 months ago so still recovering from that.

she came with a wintec pro dressage saddle and two rugs, so sorted realy

One horse. I'm not sure what the conversion is but in American dollars per month -

$450 for stall and paddock (including shavings)

$40 for feed and supplements

$150 every six weeks for farrier

$200 twice a year for vaccinations

That's the basics and of course doesn't include things like tack, clothing, treats, supplies, emergency vet bills and so on.

At the moment? £0 as I'm currently horseless! :D

But I do remember I used to spend approx £200 month which overall isn't bad as I felt it was justified, some people go out every weekend and easily flitter away £50 a night on drink etc, I don't!

Livery yard#1- £70 month summer or £100 month winter both to incl hay and straw
Livery yard#2 - £14 week not incl hay/straw (this cost £30-£40 month to buy in)
Shoes - £60 every 6 weeks
Worming - £15 every 8 weeks (ish)
Food - £20-£30 a month
Insurance - £20 a month

Fuel - one of my biggest costs probably! Varies tremendously on what car I had at the time, I have since swapped my RR for a golf diesel which achieves 50mpg! Yes please! :D

Dividing the 6/8 weekly into monthly costs came in under £200 month I think, not bad really :)

I have a little budget spreadsheet.

When he was on full livery, that plus farrier plus worming/chiro/supplements/vet used to cost me £528 per month (excluding fortnightly lessons and competition fees)

Now he's on grass livery (but still gets fed and stuff, it's not DIY), and I have a sharer, it's costing me £273 per month :d

I am just trying to not count my chickens re: the sharer and save some ££ up for winter as I'm right in the middle of buying a flat :S and that's going to be pretty damned expensive!

I had two options. £25 for stable (straw/hay on top!) a week for a yard with decent hacking and two schools but horses are stabled EVERY night and have extremely limited turnout in winter = unhappy pony!

Or my current set up.

Field - £8 a week
Hay - £0
Bedding - £0
Farrier - £20 every 6 weeks
Dentist - £35 every 6-12 months
Insurance - £30 - every month
Vaccinations - £70 a year

Out of the two I would go with the latter... Don't like the fact he HAS to come in nor about limited turnout in winter.

Could you not find a happy medium. i.e somewhere with a school and good turnout?

Around here it's generally one or the other :(

Facilities and limited turnout (not even out all summer) or no facilities but unlimited turnout.

There is absoloutley no grass round here and no hay thats not costing about £5 a bale! (Last Years)
I do actually think my horses are getting nearly as much as they are through winter!!

Yep! :D

Thing is, he's a pig in the stable but I know that with a yard routine like that he'd be much better. Stabling would be handy for his weight but right now I couldn't afford it, especially as when he was stabled he needed fully mucking out twice a day he was so filthy

Oh dear, well i have 3.
One on livery - £220 pm includes hay and bedding
- £20 pm hard feed
- £65 every 6 wks shoes

One on own land - £28 trim every 9 weeks
one on grazing - £10 per week
- £28 trim every 9 weeks

Blimey, living in Sussex must be EXPENSIVE!

£390 for part livery (wouldn't be able to work and do her, as I commute to London), plus £10 a day on the weekends, if required. However, that includes haylage and feed.

£48 insurance

£50 farrier, averaged over month (approx)

plus wormer, lessons, competition fees and any annual vets / dental bills.

So... about £600 a month, roughly? Which is £7200 a year (!!!).

I live with my mother, though. The choice was between a horse and a house... I chose the horse (perhaps slightly foolishly).

oh my lord i dont understand how you lot stand it. if i pushed the boat out i could spend 4000 a year but at the moment she has everything she needs and i could easily only spend 3000 a year and i could get that down to 2000 if i needed to

Summer for two horses
stable and grazing £100 a month
£100 for shoes for the two every 8 weeks

Winter
Livery £100 a month
Haylage £30 a month (2 big roundals last a month)
Straw £15 - 1 roundal lasts a month as they`re on deep litter
Shoes £100 every 8-10 weeks
Feed £30 a month
£175 a month in total :)

Prices divided to get weekly cost:

£10 field - small field shared with one other horse, shelter and locked shed, hosepipe and power from house across the road, great hacking
£10 hay
£5 shoes - fronts only every 8 weeks
£5 feed - balancer, chaff, salt, oil
£5 insurance
£4 clipping - full clip year round
£3 school hire - once a week for 30 mins
£3 jab/teeth/worming
£2 chiropractor
£1 saddle check/re-flock

Total = £48 per week, £206 approx per month.

Other costs - muck heap removal, entry fees, lorry hire/diesel, replacing equipment, xc course hire

I make my own fly spray really cheaply and poo-pick my instructor's field in return for free riding lessons.

I have a new sharer about to start who will pay £15 a week.

Wow!! Must show this thread to my boyfriend! He thinks I spend alot but it would seem that Dee is a cheap pony!! :D
Her livery is £7 a week (bargain I know!) but we have no facilities and the hacking is 90% road work. And I'm there on my own which I hate!!
Dee prob costs me £3 a week to feed. And then shoes are £50 every six weeks. But still eveb with the insurance and wormers and stuff I still think shes a bargain to keep! And all of her costs are deffo justified :)

Per month:
£50 Field
£10 Feed
£30 Shoes
£30 Insurance
£20 extras (wormer/teeth check/vaccinations).
In the winter months (Nov-March) I probably spend an extra £12 per week for hay.

I spend(ish)

winter = £126 P/M for livery including Straw, turnout use of menage etc.
summer = £100 can sue stable when ever i want.

Shoes = £45 every 4-6 weeks.
Entry fees = £60-£70 twice(ish) a month.
feed = £20 month, + £2 per bag a week for carrots
Insurance = £34 per month.
sure there is LOADS more, but I cant think ATM.

Livery - Free!! Keep them at home on Dad's fields.
Shoes £55 every 7 weeks, one gets a new full set and my old one gets front shoes and hind trim :)
Feed - Prob bout £10 a month in summer, if that! £30ish in winter I think.
I allow about £20 every 3 months for worming (Equimax)
Whatevers left for comps lessons etc.
Nothing on hay atm, I dread to think how much in winter tho!
Nothing on bedding as they live out lol, unless the weather is really bad!
