"How much do you want for him?"

Have you ever been at a show & someone has come up to you & said those words "How much do you want for him ?" I suppose it's a compliment really, but on the othert hand it's a bit of a cheek. Some people seem to think that everything's for sale if the price is right. It happened to me & I was a bit taken aback.

Oops sometimes I am guilty of is he/she for sale? God never thought I might offend someone thought it would be a compliment if anything.

I will think twice next time, although I did buy a really sweet pony for the children at a show once and they seemed quite thrilled.

! I think I agree, as much as a horse may mean to me, if it was a good home (I wouldn't sell the horse to just anyone!), and the price was right, I would definitely be tempted.....
 
The older you get, the more you realise that everything is for sale at the right price! Right price being not necessarily money either.

When I was young I also had the same thing - I was a teenager and at that point I firmly believed that I would NEVER sell my horse so I said no thanks......however as generally always happens, I did sell my horse a few years later.

I have just had a funny buying experience; one that possibly shouldn't have happened, but with good persuasion on my part, it did.
 
Take it as a compliment. I can't believe anyone could possibly be offended by someone else liking their horse or pony sooo much that they wanted to buy it! The answer is yes - several people have tried to buy our horses, and if they aren't for sale, then that is the answer, If they ARE for sale, then fantastic result for everyone!
 
I have had it a few times with Louis but I think of it as a compliment really. I just laugh it off and tell them there is no price that I would sell him for!
 
Same here always the "traveller community"........."Give yer £500 nicker for him".....I don't think so.....or "Is he a driver I'll make you an offer you can't refuse darling"...Yeah right!!
 
I am with Rambo, still waiting for someone to offer the money. For the right money i'd have no probs.

A friend was offered an open cheque as her horse attended PC camp. She refused it - which we all thought was mad. Anyway couple of months later the horse starts stumbling behind and now 4 months later he has been PTS through the above and they may not get paid for it.
 
I would totally take it as a compliment if someone said that to me but I would never buy a horse myself without giving it a thorough try out first.

My YO's sister bought a horse on the spot at a show once for her daughter because it had won everything!

Then they got her home and realised she was a really hard horse to handle, very domineering and not safe for a child to ride. She ended up terrifying the girl so much that in they end they gave her to my YO to look after which worked out brilliantly for me as I'm now riding her! She is the sort of horse who will try every trick in the book but if you persevere then she is amazing.
 
I was asked a few times when bertie was youngers! was offered £10k for him not bad considering we paid £2500 for him- although still 16 years ago that was a lot of money for a ex race horse *hack*
 
God wish someone would offer me!!

Not that i would sell just that the offer would be nice if that makes sense.

But i spose the way it was said in your post does come across a bit rude so i think i would be a bit taken a back if someone said it like that to me.
 
I have never been asked, but then again, ive never taken my boy to a competition yet as i havent had him long enough.. bring on the summer and ill let you know! Lol.
 
I did have someone want to buy my girl when she was a yearling - I took it as a compliment

i was taken aback when in summer it happen to me........ but it made me laugh and i took it as compliment,

But it's true everything does have a price, then it 's down to haggling were price is, which is where folk can insult you!!!

I have only taken my 4yr old to 1 show and was offered cash for her. They wanted her to hunt. Definately flattered, but I could never sell her. I have had her since she was a foal and have backed her and done all the work on her myself. They obviouly didn't see the bit where she was rearing full heigh!!
 
Almost! Last summer I was offered £100 off any of a certain studs stallions for my mare and should I ever sell her then they'd like first refusal. Wish someone would come and say that about H.........
