Having just bought my first horse after years of loaning I find I am thinking about him constantly, worrying that he is going to be turned out with the others tomorrow, worried that he was headshaky yesterday, worried about a small fly bite - worry worry worry! I also want to spend as much time as possible with him and am spending hours up there fitting it around work. Poor OH hasn't seen me

Also.. just a little musing... At my yard most people are on part livery of which I am one (on 5 day version). I still go up there every day to check him, feed him and generally spend time with him. Only one other part livery goes up there in the week. I couldn't bare to not see him in the week - why do these people have horses?

I worry constantly, then when I haven't got anything to worry about, I worry about that!

She's given me more than enough to worry about this year. Having surgery in April.

I've vowed now to make the most of her and try to stop the worry.

ahh you just sound like a new mummy but i bet you he'll be fine it will become easier for you i guess your still settling into the ownership things and that this time he's yours...turn the negs into positvives if you can hun...and enjoy your new ned!!

Yes, i've just got mine on full loan but worry about him constantly too, worry he's gonna go lame, worry he's gonna get lammi, worry he's getting fat, worry he'll get colic lol, the list is endless! I guess you can't worry, just gotta get on with it.

And as for liveries, we have some like this on our yard, horses on full livery and owners only go up at weekend, i really don't see the point in having a horse, may as well pay for a riding lesson once a week, it'd be cheaper!
 
My horse is never far from my thoughts.

And when I moved yards last week my brain was in total stress overdrive.

I think it's only natural in your position to be worrying, as it were. New horse, new yard etc. And yes, my horse gets seen by me a minimum of twice a day.
 
I used to worry to the point that I made myself ill and my nerves were shot. I still suffer with anxiety but I try very hard not to worry about my horse.
 
I used to worry incessantly but have now realised that seeing as how she's survived my care for this long, I must be doing somthing right

I do however still and always will worry about paying the bills if, God forbid, I have an accident.
 
I don't worry about Scooby's welfare when I'm not around because I know that the YO is much more knowledgable than me and she's always there, so I know he's in safe hands. I do worry about pretty much everything else though, including whether I'm a good enough rider to get him out of his bad habits, his health (although the vet checked him over yesterday and said he's perfectly healthy, hooray), and I am ashamed to say I've even been known to worry about whether or not he likes me.

I feel that I have an excuse though, because I'm being treated for an anxiety disorder and I worry a lot less than I used to.

Don't worry you will relax SLIGHTLY as time passes. I still worry about my boy every day - is he too warm/cold, did he eat his breakfast, has he enough water. The list goes on and on and on and on but you have to keep it at a managable level

oh dear - you're going to be a nervous wreck!

think it's a bit unfair to judge people on part who don't go up the yard during the week - some people just can't ride or do their horses during the week......better that than someone who just leaves them in the field all week :-)

On the Part Livery thing some people just dont have the time to pop in a lot during the week and some do.

When I first had my lump he was on Part Livery but I used to go twice a day anyway to make sure he was settled and there were no issues.

Now he is on DIY i have on occassions been 3 times but I think thats OCD mebbe

If he's your first horse then I'm not surprised you worry! I did with my first, and I think everyone does. I don't worry much now but then again I have a brilliant YO and the other liveries are great, so I know if there was a problem they would deal with it.

Re. your other point, I think it's a bit unfair to judge why other people do or don't do their own horses and how often they see them. Has it occurred to you that they might just work v long hours so physically can't get there? I was a part livery last winter, so my horse was done 7 days a week, I only had to go up to ride. This winter he's done mon to fri for me. I work long hours and because I work in sales, I do a lot of driving. If I don't leave a customer site til 4.30pm and have a 3 hour drive home, I don't want to go to the yard for the sake of seeing my horse in the pitch dark when I know he's been mucked out, fed, hayed and rug changed. He doesn't care if he sees me every day as long as he's cared for, which he is. In the depths of winter I go up both weekend days (as long as I'm not away) and probably 3 times in the week. That doesnt make me a bad owner, it just makes me a busy person. Another livery is a high flying type in the NHS, she only ever comes up at the weekends in winter, usually once in the week in summer. It doesn't mean she loves her horse any less, just that she works hard to pay for her horse.

I'm sorry as I don't mean to have a go at you but people like that livery and me work hard to pay for our horses. They're cared for and ridden when we're not around, so I don't feel it's for anyone else to judge us by how much time we spend with them.

Agree! Maybe those people work horribly long hours and this is the only way they can keep a horse?

When I was at Uni I had to put my two on Full Livery. Personally I hated it, but it was the only way to guarantee continuity of care for them.

I actually really like part livery, though I did miss doing my horse at weekends. Now he is TO, BI, mucked out, fed, watered, rugs changed etc mon-fri for me and TO sat, sun. I pay for everything but only muck out etc at weekends. Owning a horse isn't about being a martyr and getting up at 4am, mucking out in the dark, going to work with hay in your hair, coming home in the yard then having to trawl around a 5 acre field in the dark to find your horse who thinks hiding in the hedge in the farthest corner is a fun game, and finally getting home at 10pm. It is about enjoyment, and if being on part or full livery enhances my enjoyment of my horse, why shouldn't I do it? It doesn't make the DIY owners at my yard better horsepeople because they do their own mucking out - and TBH my horse is probably looked after a lot better by my YO than he is by me because she has the time to do it properly!

He also loves my YO more than he loves me

At long last I might realise I'm not the only one who wories about stupid little things. The other weekend it was extremely windy here to the point where the noise woke me up at 3am, cue me fretting in case Belle's lw rug had blown up and spooked her, and what if one of the straps had come undone and she was galloping around the field and caught her leg... Nightmare! Needless to say she was absolutely fine.

I'm a first time mummy too. I have loaned before but more on a 'you can ride my horse any time' type loan with no contract, this horse is my wholoe responsibility cos the owner isn't at the yard and I miss my safety net slightly!

I'm sure I'll calm down over time though
 
I am a first time owner and despite having had George over 2 yrs I still worry about him a lot, and he is never far from my thoughts! I am much better than I used to be, especially now that I am at a yard where they are brilliant and I completely trust them.
 
I take your point about people working long hours but what I should have said is that I personally couldn't not see him everyday despite the fact I have him on part. Perhaps thats the new mummy syndrome kicking in...

As for the martyr thing, I think its part and parcel of horse ownership to get hay in your hair and smell of poop. But then thats my personal opinion...
 
Thank goodness im not the only one!! I always worry about my pony... i sit in lessons at school thinking "oh god he's going to be too warm/cold" or i worry that he doesnt drink enough (he like never drinks!!)

Im worrying even now cos he's out on his own as field buddy is in.... he seems a bit depressed on his own!! Seriously ive got to stop this its ridiculous!!
 
I'm currently worrying whether Ned had properly dried before I popped his rug on, and so whether he's warm!

I miss my boy if I haven't been up for a few days but in winter, when I only see him at 8pm every day in the dark, and it's peeing it down, and I can't ride because we only have an outdoor school, I can live with not seeing him every day quite happily! I was really anal about doing my horse myself until I went on PL last winter and it took me a while to get used to it, but got used to it pretty quickly. I can be working anywhere across the west UK or Wales (I'm in sales, cover Bristol to Bham, LPool, Manchester and west of M6 up to Scottish borders...if I have to drive 3 hours to see customers in Cumbria, then 3 hours home, there's no way I'm going to muck out that day!!) so it isn't feasible for me to go up every day.

Don't get me wrong, I end up with hay in my hair at weekends and smell of horse wee after I've ridden but I'm not sure my customers would appreciate me turning up to sell them things looking like that

I think it's a case of live and let live. Part livery suits me as does not seeing my horse every day; part livery and seeing your horse every day suits you.
 
I do think about my two all the time, I work 8 - 4 every day in the week, and have a 6 year old daughter who has home work etc, so my two are on full livery, but on my best friends yard and i know she looks after them as if they were her own. We pop down most days on our way home to groom them and spend time with them. During weekends and school holidays they are not on full livery, i do them myself and we end up spening most of the day there. My best chum/yard owner calls me every evening to chat about how they have been that day, as often she has left for the day by the time i get to the yard.
I don't think i would have them on full livery any where else, as i am such a stress head-the only person i trust to do them is my friend!
