On average..

Including everything, Farrier, feed stabling, bedding, everything really...

Just curious, as i'm looking into horse ownership again , and must try and convince myself otherwise! although, it is becoming very tempting ;)

too much :(

With shows, lessons and lorry fuel about £500 a month. Doesn't include insurance, wormers or added little purchases!

Forgot to say, that's DIY!

I can tell you EXACTLY as ours are part of our business and we have to do a dissection for the accounts. And the grand total is.............£66.83 per month each! They are kept at home, we have our own grazing but buy in hay, straw bedding, feed (this is minimal), farrier services (3 out of 4 are unshod; the 1 is only shod in summer, fronts only), worming & worm count fees, vaccs and grooming products. This also includes electricity and water, but excludes diesel, lorry maintainance, taxes and insurance. The horses are not insured. This also doesn't include tack purchases.

Livery for two (well one is a miniature!) is £100pm
Feed/Hay £40pm
Bedding (straw and shavings) £30
Farrier £50

So roughly £220 :) (I allow an leeway of an extra £150 for extras)

It also might vary quite a bit depending whereabouts you are. I'm on DIY. I thought my horse cost me about £600 per month including entry fees and lessons, but I think it might actually be nearer to £700 not including lorry tax, insurance and repairs

Per month:-
Rent £150
Lorry parking £10
Shavings £60 (but currently almost double this as in almost 24/7 until end of month)
Hay £60 (again a lot more than £60 at the moment as almost no turnout)
Insurance £25
Feed £10
Shoes £82 (every 6 weeks)
Lessons £120
Entry fees £100-£150+
Diesel for lorry £100

I'm just working out sums myself :o

£40 a month livery [x 2]
£20 approx per week hay.
£12 straw every 2 1/2 weeks.

Wormer every 13 weeks approx. £10

Farrier only a few times a year as barefoot and do a lot of roadwork and have good feet. £10

Dentist £30 yearly.

Hard feed, currently till summer grass, £80 per month approx.

So 'monthly' costs for 2 is about £180-200ish.

Rent, including Hay/Haylage: £135
YO to turn out am: £40
Feed: £20
Trim £5 per month (perhaps every 5-6 months) £25 (he is self trimming with work and no issues)
Bedding £20 max

so about £220, plus insurance, wormer/teeth/massage when needed and non necessities.

£750 a month - but that's full livery on the London/Essex border and a weekly lesson, so that's actually pretty cheap (at a previous yard it was costing well over £1000).

Livery is £560 including ad lib hay, straw and hard feed of choice, lessons are £25 a go, shoes are £40 every 6 weeks as he only has fronts, plus a bit extra for wormers, dentist, random tack shop purchases etc.

Luckily, we have own grazing, and own hay/straw.. I would do alot of roadwork, so horse would hopefully be nice and barefoot.. (Depending on horse obviously..)

It would be a cob/native jobby, minimal feed and living out.

What about rugs and tack..

I need to make a list of everything i need really! and all costs... :o

Less than £100 per month per horse, not including entries or lorry maintanence, less in the summer when I'm not feeding haylage, but we have 6 and rent a field, which has saved us ahuge amount.
Previously spending closer to £200 per month per horse!

One horse in NZ

Grazing - $80 a month (out 24/7)
Trimming - $70 month
Feed on average - $2500 per year (hay, chaff, oats, supplements)
Vets - haven't paid a vet for ages (touch wood)
Teeth - $120 year
Chiro - $240 year
Gear - have most of what I need these days
Worming - $68
Comps - varies

Currently my monthly costs on DIY livery, getting my own of everything is approx £300.

Will be going up tomorrow though possibly as viewing a baby :-)

I reckoned that all in, including everything our two live out at home ponies cost £2.5k per annum - the same as a family of 4 all inclusive summer holiday abroad. Had the conversation with a friend who was saying they'd never be able to afford ponies for their 2 kids, had to point out we didn't 'do' holidays....so could afford ponies.....

In the winter around £250 - £300 per month, and that's not including insurance or vets bills, or wormers and little extras here and there.

Summer, if out 24/7 around £150-£200 not including above mentioned.

Insurance I pay yearly (or have up until now but will prob have to rethink this year) £500 per year in one lump sum.

I am not worrying if I can't afford my horse this year though, because there is this fantastic new charity been set up, called The Horse and Owner Help Centre, which apparently will fund your horse, or even multiple horses, if you find you cannot afford to look after them responsibly. ;-)

All in, including the extra costs of running a 4x4, and the repayment on a loan to buy said 4x4 and trailer, and including lessons, competing, livery (part) and all those just-popping-to-the-tackshop-for-one-thing-how-the-hell-have-i-spent-eighty-quid incidents ... about £750 a month.

Without the loan repayment, a little over £500.

15 acre field + stable = £30 per month
Haylage = £30 ish pm Only during winter
Straw = £30 only during winter
Other feed = £20 pm
about £50-£75 per year on wormers
not sure about vet/farrier
no lorry/trailer as i have use of a relatives when needed

I have 2 at home - out 24/7 on poor grazing (so going through loads of hay!) And one on DIY just down the road.
Total for the month for the 3 of them is just over £600 a month. This covers insurance, feet, livery hay and feed.

Not included is yearly injections, teeth, 6 monthly chiro check, saddler, lessons and entry fees.

Iv learnt never never work it out throw away bank statments and credit card statements unopen what you dont know wont hurt you

Mine costs me £860 minimum. That's without wormers or any extras she might need.

Full livery of £100 per week!!! Roughly £440pm!!
Farrier every 7 weeks £45.
Insurance £25pm.
And we have her on a payment plan of £350! per month. Until end of February.

Soon will be roughly £500 and looking forward to it! Although OH wants to look at horse boxes then!!!

I couldn't keep on my own land, I'd have 10 by now! Lol! At a livery yard I can only afford the one! ;)

sorry, that was aimed at OP as I think she mentioned she has her own grazing? Although tis a bit early, I may have missed the point.

I'd be the same with own land - one more won't hurt ;) As it is I fancy a second and the one I have isn't cheap and I wouldn't have time to ride it!
