How much do your horses cost you a month?

sorry, that was aimed at OP as I think she mentioned she has her own grazing? Although tis a bit early, I may have missed the point.

I'd be the same with own land - one more won't hurt ;) As it is I fancy a second and the one I have isn't cheap and I wouldn't have time to ride it!

Yeah I just thought I'd join in! :)

My mare is a cheap one as in good doer and feet wise but I wouldn't have the time to ride either, and I would keep getting 'just one more!' Too! :D

Livery - £520/month
Insurance - £70/month
Shoeing - £60/month
Lessons - £160/month

That excludes extras, hunting subs, entry fees, etc so looking at a whopping £1000/month on average for ONE horse!

I now which I hadn't done this exercise!

On average..

Including everything, Farrier, feed stabling, bedding, everything really...

Just curious, as i'm looking into horse ownership again , and must try and convince myself otherwise! although, it is becoming very tempting ;)

I'll do this PER HORSE (I have 2 ;) )
Farrier-£20 a trim
Bedding-£8 (one is on straw one on wood pellets, pellets are £14 a month)
Feed-a bag lasts longer than a month but would say about a tenner
Livery-£100 plus £40 unlimited hay or haylage
Insurance-£33 ish
Can't think of anything else! Perhaps £30 If I have a lesson :p

Mine are both on assisted DIY livery so can pay for full livery on the days I have to work long hours. Roughly it costs me 500 per month for both so not as bad as others.
Currently don't compete or have transport though so this will probably ride once we are getting out and about

Assited livery (including unlimited Hay/hayledge and unlimited bedding) - £50 per week.

Hard Feed - £30 per month

Insurance - £20 per month

Lessons - £75 per month

Entry fees - £50 per month

Farrier - £20 every 7 weeks (he's barefoot)

Flu/Tetnus jabs - £100 per year

Dentist - £40 every 8 months

Worming - £50 (ish) a year

Physio visit - £75 per year

Saddler visit - £40 per year

...Then there's tack, unexpected illness, replacement rugs, replacement yard equipment, the fuel to get to the yard every day...

Oh dear! Wish I hadn't started this!!!!!!!

Livery - £108
Feed - £32
hay - £35
Shoes - £60 every 7 weeks
Supplements - £10
Insurance - £40
Vaccines and teeth - £100 annually
saddle checks - £20 twice a year

If I work it out annually and divide by 12 months it comes to about £280 a month in the winter and about £200 a month in the summer

On average ours cost around £50 per month each for everything except new tack/rugs if required. We have them at home which is great and in theory saves a lot, but if I took into account the higher mortgage for a place with land then it would be significantly more!

ETA: of course since the mortgage is fixed anyway, the more horses you acquire, the less you pay 'per-horse'! That's my excuse for expanding our little herd anyway... :D

Cheap and cheerful, very good doer cob. Worked out a year all in and divided it by 12...£140. He gets next to no feed, just grass and a bit of hay. Lives out (cheap field rent) and has a full set of shoes every 8 weeks. Insurance/vaccs/worming/teeth included. When he is sore (arthritic) he has danilon which works out at about 90p a day so that would be extra.

I worked this out on a previous similar thread, all in inc. feed, shoes, insurance etc. they are £35 a month each (excluding the mortgage!)
I'm pretty happy with that.
When I was on a yard there was a lovely lady who lived in central London, 2 on full livery inc. exercise and one with remedial shoes, her bill was well in excess of £1,500 a month and she rode on weekend day a week for a 40 min hack - she was also pretty happy with that
If you can afford it and they make you happy does it matter?
