After investing in a weigh tape this weekend, i was quite shocked to see that my 17.1hh tb x id weighs 560kg! Well, he's quite a lanky gangly type still and does need more top line still but i thought he'd be more like 650kg!

Did i weigh him wrong or have no idea how much he should weigh in the first place? x

This is him!

How much do yours weigh....with pics if possible? x Are weigh tapes accurate?! x

I'd say you have weighed him wrong! The horse in my siggy is just under 17.1hh - he is a Dutch WB. He weighs in at 727KG!! Taking into account the difference in 'bone' between yours and mine I think your horse would weigh the 650KG or thereabouts that you estimated!

PS Lovely looking horse by the way x

Thanks Applecart! x I put the tape behind his withers and level with his girth line....is that right?! Think thats what the picture said! x Wonder if i had the tape the wrong way round...is that possible?! I am blonde!! lol x

Did think 560kgs was wrong but could only compare to my friend who said her cob weighs 600kg and he's 15hh! He is a chunky little thing though! x

Weight tapes are known for being fairly inaccurate anyway! Tape should go from just behind the wither to where the girth sits - should be a diagonal line :)

Oh thank Broke but happy, i had a straight line, not a diagonal one. Shouldn't have thought that it would make a massive amount of difference though, i'll re-do it later on! x

How can it work out the weight of a horse by its roundness?! Is it a bit rubbish like a BMI chart where it doesnt take into consideration that muscle weighs more? x Stupid weigh tape! shouldnt of bought it!! lol x

According to the weight tape my daughter's id x tb mare was 560kg. However, when she was weighed at the vets before having an operation her true weight was 625kg.

Mine was weighed at vets pre surgery at 472kg (14.2hh Welsh Dx)

She weight tapes at 440-500kg depending on the tape (I have 2 different ones). When we had whole yard weighed the tapes were out by an average of 50kg (under the actual weight).

She has put on a bit since surgery (due to no work) so I think she is probably closer to 500kg and I worm etc as 500kg anyway.

My 15.1 cob was recently measure by the Dengie people at our riding camp.

Weigh tape - 490 kg
Weigh bridge - 533 kg
Condition scored 3.5

The results for the various horses were very interesting. Weightape was out by at least 20 kg for everyone.

I am now trying to get about 30 kgs off mine.

I have my horse weighed twice a year by Spillers. Last time they came out he weighed 465kgs on my weigh tape and 529kgs on weighbridge! Weigh tapes can be as much as 100kgs out apparently

Which tape have you got. Weigh tapes are generally not very accurate but the Dodson & Horrell one is meant to be much better than most. There's one side of the tape for horses and the other side for ponies.

Stupid weigh tape! shouldnt of bought it!! lol x

Well that depends why you actually bought it in the first place! If it is to give an accurate idea of your horse's weight, then I agree you have probably wasted your money. However, if you are using it to monitor whether your horse is losing, gaining or maintaining weight then it will fulfill that purpose quite well.

I think I tried a weightape before and it wouldn't go round my horse :-O

He does have a 62" girth though!!! he is very very deep through the body!

My horse weigh tapes at about 60kgs less than she is  on a weigh bridge she is 442kg, she is 15hh welsh x TB, my 14hh NF forest weigh bridged at about the same but was 8 months in foal at the time & my Shetland was 234kgs.

Weigh tapes are good for monitoring changes but really not accurate! :)

Mine is a 14.3 very chunky cob, and she was weighing in at 484kg on weightape, went to vets for surgery and weighed in at 532kg on the weighbridge! Weigh tape more than a little out! However, I use it to monitor loss/ gain - she was 567kg on it when I bought her so not a bad loss whichever way you look at it!

Aww well it was only £3.99 or something so not a massive loss but still, could of bought a likit instead! lol x

I'll try it once more tonight - in the right place but sounds like it was a waste of time! x I dont actually know why i bought it haha x I was intrigued to see what he weighs but tend to feed my horses depending on how they look rather than weight but can see if he loses and gains weight with it i guess! Not that i really wanted to know!! x He either looks fatter or thinner to me!! x

Another, easier way to see if your horse is losing/gaining weight is to take confo shots every week. It's hard to tell when you see them every day!

My big heavy weight Irish draft got weighed at RVC a few weeks ago he is 788kg :0

My ID 17.1hh raised eyebrows amongst the vets at my equine practice when he stepped on the weighbridge.... they all guestimated him at 750kg and he was actually 848kg. Apparently Percheron stallion was the only one they had measured that was heavier!!!!!

My smaller lad 16.2hh IDxWB was 702kg

Weightape were approx 150kg and 60kg out respectively.
