I am thinking of purchasing a Shetland/Welsh Pony, I have a vague idea of the type of costs would be involved, but if you could offer any advice on the monthly/annual costs of owning a shetland/welsh pony, it would be much appreciated.

Most of it is the same as any other horse, apart from the food. Mine would go through a couple of small bales of hay each a week, plus at least a bag of feed per month. Other costs are feet trimming every 6 weeks (£25). Teeth once or twice a year (£50), worming or worm counts (£20 ish every few months) Livery and bedding if stabled (varies depending on location), insurance if required, vaccinations (budget approx £100 yearly). Then there’s all the unexpected costs such as vet bills!

My miniature shetland costs (almost) more than my mount to actually keep, but below is some of the costs:

Shetland trim every 6 weeks (20 a time).
Has had laminitis in past so is penned outside but with a shelter overnight, has half a bale miscanthus a week (4.50 is half cost) , plus haynet. (7 nets a week, approx £4)
Plus wormer, water (it's on a meter, every drop counts, fresh is for drinking and everything else is from water butts), annual vaccs, 2 x dental per year.
2 x dinky grazing muzzles every year.
Occasional fence repairs.
Bribes to friends to clip gullet and belly once a month from late Sept to April.
Plus any other visits she engineers to see her beloved favourite vet.

Similar amounts as bigger horses if on livery. Vastly less if on rented field/own land. Same for trims, vaccinations, dentist, insurance. Eat next to nothing, can live out, if stabled use very little hay/bedding.
