My lorrys broken and I cant afford to fix it and I think its going to need a headgasket (Im praying not) and am wondering how much a headgasket will cost. Im not sure whether to take it into garage and just ask for a quote. Its annoying coz I will have a new horse soon (hopefully) but no horsebox to transport him to shows.

The head gasket itself is not very expensive but.........it depends on the lorry/van and if it has a fixed cab. So what is your lorry? Manufacturer/Model/Weight/Year manufacture/Is cab fixed.

You could probably buy a head gasket set from ebay for £20-80 depending on the make and model. The tricky part is how much dismantling you have to do to change it, plus having a torque wrench to tighten to the correct settings (and having the manual to tell you this)

Whereabouts are you? In addition to replacing the gaskets it is advisable to have the head "skimmed" in order to create a good seal. My OH works on horseboxes and doesn't charge silly money. We're NW Kent on the Croydon/Surrey borders.

Its a 1994, M reg Mark 1 Renault Master
its very hard to say without seeing it, if its been overheated and run without water it could be a big job or if its just loosing a bit of water maybe just a gasket , could also be other things wrong so make sure the person fixing it knows what their doing and can make an accurate diagnosis...

What makes you think the headgasket has gone . (No this isnt a sarcy comment, ) can you explain the symptoms in detail.

Im probably jumping the gun a bit, but end of last summer I took box on a 4 hour round trip, the fans kept coming on, on the way home I got caught in some traffic and the fan came on again as it was at a standstill I rang my dad and he said pull over its an old van. So I did and checked the coolant it had gone down a bit, got after about 30 mins traffic was moving and as we neared home the fans came on again. We pulled over and checked the coolant and there was none in it so I topped it up and headed home. Its been run since (only at home) and there wasnt any water coming from exhaust pipe.

When my dad started it in December he said the fans werent coming on but thats probably a separate matter.

Im probably worrying about nothing

Ahhh ,I think that your van was probably just getting hot last summer. Its amazing how many cars and vans boil up in hot weather in very slow traffic ,for example. This could well have pushed out the coolant. Incidentaly I hope you didnt undo the radiator cap, its a sure way to get horribly scalded from a hot engine. Also, water coming out of the exhaust pipe isnt a symptom of a headgasket. Lots of possibilities ,but headgasket would be quite low down the list. A good mechanic needs to check it over.
