Hello!

Sorry been off the radar for a while, life with 2 terrors is busy!

So since having the second baby, poor Mabel's walks have shortened massively, plus with second baby now eating food (or more often, throwing the food on the floor for Mabel to eat), her tummy line has expanded rapidly. I want her to be spayed, ideally December as that's 3 months since last season but my priority is shifting this weight so if I have to put that off by another season then fine.

She's a cockerpoo but tbh is the build and size of your average show cocker. She's a stocky build so I think really we're aiming for 12kgish. What do you think?

I'm ashamed to say at the vets a few weeks ago she was 15.65kg. I've been burning with shame since. She's down to 15.3kg now so it is shifting. We've been prioritising walks and I've been on high alert around baby food time making sure she doesn't catch any droppage. I've not looked into changing her food yet but is there any low cal stuff people recommend? I think she is pretty hungry bless her as she's probs got used to a lot of snacking in the last few months.

My Springer is cocker sized and weighs around 12 to 13kg - she spent the first 5 years of her life looking like a skinned rabbit at around 11kg, looks good at 12.5 and loses her waist by 13.5kg
She's raw fed and I weigh food for her - I've never been one for weight loss or gain foods. I appreciate raw might be tricky with small children, but I'd just concentrate on a good quality food that suits you

11kg and 13kg but they are working type. Burns do a decent quality light food that allows them have a normal quantity of food with less calories so they don't feel hungry/deprived. You do need to be strict on extras or reduce her main food to account for them.

My cocker is a consistent 19.4kg.

He's not fat, can see and feel ribs. He gets weighed at the vets and I asked about it because I've never seen anyone online with a dog close to his weight.

He's seen 3 different vets at this practice and they've all said he's a healthy weight and has a good body condition score when I've asked. He's fit and active (not all day working on the grouse moors active right enough). Not sure if it'd partly because he's entire? I saw his mum and grandma and they were substantial working dogs (mum was doing full days and field trials pre pups). Possibly his Mallowdale bloodlines??

So Mabel is very petite by comparison to my monster.

Both the 2 I have here are Mallowdale lines and Ian's tend be small! Sometimes you just get an oddity - I have a 26kg cob of a Springer who came from a 13kg bitch covered with a 16kg dog

That’s a whopper all our labs are lighter than that! 🤣 tbh mum and daughter run up light, and the old one is spayed and OH is paranoid about her getting fat.

He looks like a Clumber, no idea where he came from! That's also his weight field trial fit with 2 ribs showing

Ok i feel marginally better reading your weights thank you! I thought 11kg seemed a bit extreme. She’s fat and her body score is too high but 4kg to lose is almost 1/3 of her body weight! I think maybe I need to concentrate on her body score rather than pin it all on the scales.

She used to be raw fed but I just can’t trust the girls not to help themselves 😂

🤣🤣 raw dog food is not recommended for kids.

I found feeding raw made Winnie over weight and in the end her feeds were tiny I felt mean so feed kibble and a bit of wet food now and she is much better.

Yes luckily Mabel is more of a quantity over quality girl so I think she would be happier having more quantity of less tasty stuff.

We’ve got annual jabs next week so I will weigh her again then and pray for another good week! (I feel like she’s on slimming world 😂)

Bless her need to get her a tread mill😆

Winnie puts weight on easy she is a solid little keg and is obsessed with food, Mavis is the opposite and needs quite a bit of food.

They are all different.

Kill two birds with one stone, if she's fed kibble, likes grub and you're time poor, take part of her daily allowance and do food circuits, either in your garden or wherever, just throw bits of food back and forth and she can chase them, back to you for recalls then off again. It's not as high impact as chasing a ball and is very helpful for building a few handy behaviours.

Omg what a simple but brilliant idea! She loves chasing a ball but I do worry about the joint impact. Thank you, will def start this.

Many show cockers are overweight IMHO. I think some exhibitors mistake fat for “cobbiness” I know one locally who weighs nearly 16kg and looks fat but is still winning in the show ring

I have an old fashioned type working cocker he's around 16kg not overweight just a stocky type - my friend has a light framed one who is a bit smaller and more snipey who;s around 12kg

Hello, My 2yr Male Cocker spaniel (from working farm) but not worked is also 19.4 and seems to be staying at that for a while he tall like a springer - and the vets have never said anything about his weight- he is walked 4/5 time a day and he only eats chicken and kibbles with a chew stick for his teeth and no matter what we do he stuck at same weight- I don’t think it’s a problem but my partner thinks he overweight??

I just go by the vets. I'm open and ask the vets to assess him and they've all said he's a healthy weight and not overweight.
