How much does your horse cost you?

I think at least 2.5k a year, don't tell the family!

eta actually I think I am kidding myself, that would only be £200 a month must cost at least £300 a month :O

My logic is that if I didn't spend it on the horses then I'd be one of those dull people that goes out shopping all the time for stuff I don't need and I'd spend loads on eating out (and be fat) and drinking (also not good) out.

So really I spend it on the horse for my own health/ health of the planet as I don't chuck clothes/ stuff away all the time ................

Would anyone fall for that???

Livery - £150 for horse and pony
Hay - none included in livery
Insurance - £48 for both
Feed - £5 very good doers so feed lasts ages
Vaccs - £90
Wormers - £25 x 3 times a year
Worm counts - £8 three times a year each
Dentish - £50 a year each
Trims - Both barefoot £20 a trim every 6 weeks.

Does it live in/out/both?
In at night, out in the day.

Full/part/DIY livery?
At home

Do you compete?
Not really. Going to do a few local shows this year and maybe a couple of riding club events. So say £40/year for two riding club memberships, plus £80 in entry fees, so £10/month

Do you put any money away for emergencies and if so, how much?
Not at the moment as I am only working part time. When I worked full time I put £100/month away for emergencies.

How much for feed and what is it?
No hard feed. Mineral lick about 1 per year at approx £20.

Hay/haylage? On straw or shavings?
Hay - make our own so costs a bit of fuel and some string
Straw - as above.

Farrier
One is shod every 8 weeks at £70, the other has a trim for £30 so monthly farrier costs £50

Vet/jabs
Jabs yearly costs £27 per horse.
Wormer

Total per month £60 for two plus a bit for jabs, wormers and lick.

That doesn't take into account any replacement tack. This year I need new girth straps on one saddle. I also bought a new bit earlier this year. Last year I had a new girth and two new lead ropes, so I don't go wild on new equipment, only buy what I need and replace broken items.

Insurance is also £60 ish a year.

Also didn't add anything for fuel and keeping the trailer on the road. If you add in my B+E lesson and test (hoping I pass it and don't have to add another £115+ on for another test...).

Lots. I have my own place and it needs regular maintenance such as harrowing fertiliser fencing. We have bought a tractor and farm equipment put up stables fenced limed fert etc etc. Costs £ K's
then there's feed farrier vet.
sometimes its as little as £50 a month outgoing and sometimes , like this month, its about £600

As I have my own land and stables the cost is relatively cheap especially as I have a Welsh Cob and a Welsh x TB who are both very good doers and so only have hay and chaff in the winter and no feed in the summer, although I have fed a balancer the last couple of months to the gelding as he is now unshod and advised to. This winter has been expensive as they are still on hay at £4 a bale and with the three miniatures as well they go through 3 bales a week more over the very cold period as they are then on ad lib hay. Obviously I don't have to pay livery costs. The farrier costs me £80 for all five every 8/9 weeks and the vet comes to inject every year, that is about £30 per horse plus call out fee. I do worm counts so only worm when necessary which works out cheaper even paying for the worm counts. I can keep all 5 of mine, obviously the three little ones only make one big one as far as feed is concerned, cost less to keep than a friend of mine pays for one at livery. It's definitely not a cheap pastime but I do love my horses.:D

Does it live in/out/both? Both

Full/part/DIY livery? At home, so free stable and free grazing

Do you compete? Not really, only RC stuff if we do (and not at the min cos am pregnant)

Do you put any money away for emergancies and if so, how much? Not really, should do though as she's not insured (too old!) so have to pay vets bills when they arise - and we have had some whopping bills. Should also start her jabs again as dropped out of the programme a couple of years ago when we missed one.

How much for feed and what is it? Top Spec Antilam - £35 for 2 months worth, Top Chop Lite, £10 ish for 1 months worth and Top Spec 10:10 supplement £29 for 2 months worth. so £42 per month, just over £1.40 per day. We have had digestive/feet problems so good feed is a priority.

Hay/haylage? On straw or shavings? Haylage - free from the farm (Hubby is a farmer). We have rubber matting down so only use 1 bale of shavings per week at £7.25 per bale - £30 per month

Farrier - £25 for barefoot trim each 6-8 weeks so £12.50 per month

Wormer £19 x 3 times per year so £4.75 per month

Stuff that we really don't need (spare tack, saddle cloths, bits etc etc)- God knows how much - I need to stop 'dealing' saddles although I have made a profit on every one I have resold on... I try to have a clear out periodically and eBay stuff I don't need, but that ends up funding more stuff I don't need!

Also in the process of building a new internal stable block so need to buy partitions and concrete the floor, but they aren't regular costings, thankfully. I got my haybar as a birthday present!

So all in all it looks like she costs me £89.25 per month, and that is without livery fees or tack! That is scary!

I pay £65 PCM for livery
We have free hay till it runs out (just did so have spent £20 on hay this year so far)
Free straw, insurance is £40 PCM, farrier is £20 every 8ish weeks (he's barefoot), then there are occasional costs like wormer, vet, dentist etc. and then things I can't help buying like treats or more 'essential' things like garlic powder, mud guard etc.

I suppose the basic monthly cost is about £120 then other things on top sometimes :s

Hell, forgot the dentist at £50 every 9 months so £5.55 per month - takes it up to £94.75 per month - £1137 per year.

Hell, forgot the dentist at £50 every 9 months so £5.55 per month - takes it up to £94.75 per month - £1137 per year.

Arg I forgot my dental stuff too!

£40 a pop so that runs my total up to £1600 per year  I'm beggining to dislike this game  What if I've forgotten more things?!

How much does your horse cost per month? £160 per month for livery, £28 for haylage, about £70 on Shavings when in (although might change to Straw next winter to make this a bit cheaper. £78 for shoes (he is shod every 4 weeks and has remedial shoes) £50 a month for Insurance, hard feed is approx £30 a month so without any extras (e.g. Dentist visits, Hunting Caps, etc) an average cost for me per month would be around £315.

Does it live in/out/both? In during the winter and out for a couple of hours during the day when weather allows, and mostly out during the summer most of the time but will come in for a few hours during the day most days.

Full/part/DIY livery? DIY
Do you compete? I hunt mostly :)
Do you put any money away for emergancies and if so, how much? I don't as such but for emergencies regarding horse's health, he is fully insured.

How much for feed and what is it? £16 for a bag of Alfa A Oil, £30 for a sack of Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer and £16 for a bag of Conditioning Cubes (he only has the Conditioning Cubes in the winter) + Cortaflex all year round (£45 for a tub which lasts around 4 months)

Hay/haylage? On straw or shavings? Mixture of both! I pay an extra £1.00 per day to use YO's haylage and we buy in small bales for my boy and my mum's pony. But I don't have to pay for it as I exercise mum's horse a lot so in return she pays for the hay. :) He is on Shavings at the moment but this is proving to be very expensive - £156 for 20 bales!! So I am going to try using straw next winter to save some money.

About 100 a month. Includes DIY livery, straw bed, haylage, feed, and trimming (barefoot). I hardly ever compete because I can't afford to hire transport, student problems!:p

I have 3 and they cost approximately £15k per year (not including new tack/rugs etc) and they are kept on DIY. When they were on part livery (everything except riding) they were closer to £20k. But that's London prices for you.

TBH, it is not the price of the horse, but the cost of keeping it that you need to worry about, and it costs just as much (if not more) to keep a bad horse as it does a good one.

For example, my retired chap costs £150 in supplements to keep him comfortable. One of my others has spent 9 months on box rest after 2 operations which I did not plan on. And the 3rd is a baby so keep outgrowing rugs/tack like you wouldnt believe. So they are all "bad".

I would not take on a horse with problems (sarcoids/melanomas etc) as you need to factor in the cost of treatment (none of these things will be covered by insurance). One of mine had 2 small sarcoids removed but because of the location he had to have 1 month box rest and then 3 months off ridden work. It was hugely annoying because 6 months later he injured himself and needed the first op. He is just really lucky he is pretty!

How much does your horse cost per month?

Unknown! Way too much. Keep a separate bank account for the horsey stuff and contribute to each it each.

155 for livery

Does it live in/out/both? Out but have stables anyway in livery package
Full/part/DIY livery? 5 day basic livery (feed, checks, hay)

Do you compete? Yup, 200 a year in membership plus 400 in competition fees. Just starting RC competitions too so another 300 for that

Do you put any money away for emergancies and if so, how much?
Generally build up 50 a month for extra charges (bringing in for farrier, hire of arena for lessons, etc)
Another 40 a month put away in lieu of vet insurance

How much for feed and what is it?
Alfa a, sugar beet, conditioning cubes or build up mix, saracens supplement ... Plus magnesium, and lysine.... Depends on month - when grass is good switch to cheaper chaff, to put condition on in winter spend a lot more - generally 50 pr more a month

Hay/haylage? On straw straw and hay unlimited included in livery

Shoes - 35 for fronts only, slow hoof growth so every 6 weeks in summer and depending how growth is in winter 8/9 weeks or so.

Oh and then I buy loads of things I don't really need quite often. Or have extra lessons. Or extra days out with them but pay these from my own account if I can afford it, if not I don't go. I don't ever want to do a full cost - I used to keep a spreadsheet but was afraid my husband would see as we generally promise to keep the horses within a budget of 200-250 a month each... I spend a lot more than that though :)

I do have a resolution to sell on everything we don't use, which i will eventually do

Oh and we pay someone to poo pick as hubbie is too lazy and I get cross at doing it all myself so it's the compromise - 40 a month - that comes from our 'own' money not the official horse money

The simple answer to your question is "too much"!

I am paying, monthly:
- 300€ for trainer
- 550€ for yard, full board
- 200€ for feed: ordered a truck of Rowen Barbary that should last a few months, but by my calculations its about 200€ a month. She also has alfalfa cubes.
- 140€ for farrier

And on top of this you can put competitions. Usually one per month, and cost me between 300€ and 800€ depending on the distance and whether its a national or international show.

(I'm in Portugal :) )

Right. I'm going to do it -gulp-

Not really sure how much horse costs as we have 3 and my mum buys all the feed/hay ect in then gives my OH a bill at the end of the month from our share and i don't look at it too closely. She also pays entry fees and lorry diesel because she loves it and i can't afford it :o

But if i had to pay for it all....

Does it live in/out/both? DIY livery, in at night out in day - £100

Full/part/DIY livery? Diy

Do you compete? Yes, BE which including starting fees is about £80 per event, averages at 2 a month and perhaps a sj cop/xc schooling/dressage as well so £190? Plus diesel. No idea
on this so I'm gonna say £150 so £240 total. Also £200 in lessons a month.

Do you put any money away for emergancies and if so, how much? Not specifically but isave anyway so do ave savings aside.

How much for feed and what is it? Probably approx £30 a month, hifi light, competition mix and recently a handful of racing mix and £45 in supplements ( :o he's an older horse and I'm paranoid) so £75.

Hay/haylage? Hay. £35 a month i think

Beddings - straw, £16 per month

Shoes - £86 every 6 weeks so £58 a month

Insurance - £30 a month

£754 a month :o :o I could obv do things cheaper but I like him to have the best and a HUGE chunk is competing + diesel. Would be £314 without which is much better than i expected really.
He also has pysio every 3 months but that's free as sponsored.

Sorry for being nosey but I am doing a little research

Jenbleep xx

Nope don't put money away for emergencies. Suppose I should really!

Shoes: £95 every 6 weeks (bar-shoes) hopefully will go back into normal shoes which is £62 every 6 weeks.
Dentist twice a year at £40
Physio twice a year at £50

Insurance £36 a month

I am very obsessive about recording absolutely everything that I spend on the horses since I bought a foal a few years back. I wanted to know if it was possible to make money by buying youngstock and bringing on. Result - it might be - but you need a lot of luck and an absolutely top notch horse as it costs as much to produce a bad one as a good one!

I now have 3 - a 4 yr old just staring out on her rideen career with a professional eventer - full livery obviously.

A yearling on full youngstock livery and a foal due any minute (345 days and counting) also on full livery at stud.

I take the babies to Futurity and also to the inhand classes at Osberton and I also had the 4 yr old graded last year. We've had a fair few vet expenses over the years - choke, colic, sarcoids, plasma transfusion for the foal, broken splint bone.........

I've just added everything up and it would appear that I have spent on average £916.57 a month..........

Does it live in/out/both?- Out in the day, in at night (all year round).

I have a 6yo thoroughbred gelding who is spoilt rotten!

Does it live in/out/both? - Lives in for most of the year but lives out for maybe 4 months during summer if the weather is dry

Full/part/DIY livery? - Full livery

Do you compete? - Not just now, maybe start next year

Do you put any money away for emergancies and if so, how much? - We're starting to put £30 a month a side for things like the vet, physio etc

How much for feed and what is it? - Included in full livery price but he gets Alfa A chaff, sugar beet and conditioning cubes

Hay/haylage? On straw or shavings? - Included in full livery price and on shavings

Shoes? - About £76 every 8 weeks

Insurance - £30 a month

Full livery is 7 days a week and costs just over £400 a month
We have also been getting the physio out weekly for the past month which will continue and costs between £65 to £80 per session.
Teeth done is about £40-£50 per time
Also just bought a brand new saddle last year which cost over £1000
Annual injections about £50

We also have a full wardrobe of rugs including:
Heavyweight turnout
Mediumweight turnout
Lightweight turnout
Rain sheet
Fly rug
Heavyweight stable
Mediumweight stable

I think that's about everything, definitely not a cheap animal!
