Ellie suddenly seems to be drinking a hell of a lot - she'll easily drink four or five bucketfuls in a day. She used to be the complete opposite; sometimes we'd find that she'd only drunk half of one bucket in a day! This increase seems to have coincided with this winter; she is still eating the same amount of hay, but hasnt been turned out as much so I'm wondering whether she is compensating from the lack of grass moisture....is anyone else's horse doing similar, and should I be worried?

Thumper drinks the equivalent of 3 buckets a night. We have just changed to meadow hay and so he seems to be drinking a lot more now.

3 x Big flat backed buckets (think that's about 4 1/2 normal buckets), plus whatever she drinks in the field (she definately drinks in the field too, averages 1 x large trug per week)........................no wonder her bed gets sooooooooooo wet!!!!!

P.S. this is normal for her, she has always drunk this much!!!

My cob drinks absolutely loads when she is stabled. When she was on box rest a few years ago this increased even more, so much so that whenever we went to the stable her huge tub would be empty and she'd start to drink as soon as u put the hose into it! so on the advice of our vet we were told to limit her water (but only to the amount a normal horse would drink). We have come to the conclusion that she does it partly out of boredom when she's stabled as she likes to play in her tub and she only drinks excessively when she is stabled.

No idea? Water trough in field and lots of large puddles he/she can drink from.

Blue is in at night so roughly half a bucket over night in the stable but once he's figured out the automatic water drinker on the wall he won't have a bucket and so i won't know!
