How much exercise for in foal mare?

I THINK I have persuaded her that she was doing too much work with the mare. But we will see. I looked at her hocks today and they are worse than I had at first thought. I hope she hasn't been ruined for the future as she is extremely well bred and very promising.

To the person who sent the nasty msg & those who have not read it properly. .

Sorry if you were taking about my reply i dont think it is rude at all!!
I dont disagree with mares being brought back into work in my opnion 4-6 weeks post foalong is just TOO early!!

My mare has been with me for 5 years and i know her inside out she is my not JUST A BROODMARE she is my competition/pleasure horse but i will let her enjoy her life with her foal until i feel the time is right to bring her back into work.

We all know are horses and do what is right for them... i didnt accuse you of being wrong or cruel i just dont agree with it!

OP im very glad you managed to talk sense into your friend!

Well she does adore the horse and her exercise regime was actually well meaning. She thought she had to be really fit to be able to give birth with fewer problems. The mare will now be rested with just the odd session of long lining mainly in walk and no canter. :)

How does "To the person who sent the nasty msg & those who have not read it properly" relate to your post??? The clue is in msg rather then post. I dont appreciate being labelled as cruel, ignorate etc. If a vet ever advised me against it then fine. If my mares were uncomfortable then fine. Unlike too many owners I do listen to advise from knowledgeable people & my horses. I have also been around them long enough to know that they are individuals & therefore should be treated as such.

Don't argue ladies :) There's nothing wrong with mares doing some work either before or after they foal. The only thing in question here as per OPs post is whether the mare in question should be lunged for 40 mins per day and I think we're all agreed that no she shouldn't. And the OP has managed to kindly advise the owner of this so all's happy with the world again :)
